I'm thinking that sounds reasonable, especially for someone like me that has a rather....let's say - cherubic quality to the face. Recently its like I hit a point where suddenly my goggles are digging in where they never did before, and I seem to be having issues with leaking as well. Does it seem like maybe I just need a new pair of the same goggles? Or should I try to find something else that fits my (slightly) more svelte face? If it makes a difference, I'm down about 20 pounds since I first bought the Speedo Vanquishers I've been swimming in since May. They now dig in really hard on the inner corners, and leak on the outside edges. Grats on the weight loss! I think you just need to play with the tightness on it some. I used Speedo Vanquishers exclusively during my entire time of tri training, and they worked fine for me. Give the tightness a try but it doesn't hurt to try new ones either - you face shape may be changing a bit and impacts the fit. I have a small face and it's a bit of a crap shoot - i just bought some Arena ones at a shop near me and while they sealed to my face in the store it just wouldn't stay sealed when swimming - i guess we all have different eye sockets? I need to order some of my old trusty Aquasphere goggles. Or it could just be the seal getting old so a new pair of your existing ones might be fine too. |

I know TW's face changes a lot when she loses weight like that, so it wouldn't surprise me. I'm not sure that the seal on goggles under a year old should die. However, me answering any question swim related is just foolish. Congratulations on the progress!!!! |

Seattle | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Closed Originally posted by brigby1 Originally posted by Asalzwed Hey guys, wanted to run something by you all regarding tune up races. I am a big fan of tune up races as they give you a good idea of what is possible for a goal race. I also think that it is an opportunity to build confidence, work on pacing and fueling, work out the kinks in your equipment, and just gives your more experience in racing, in general. I'm thinking of the races that appeal to me as well as work with my schedule for my marathon build. The race that does both of these things is a trail race with a ton of loss and gain, and challenging terrain. The marathon I am doing is on a non-technical trail with a gradual net downhill. This goes without saying but it's not an apples to apples comparison. I have, however, done the (potential tune-up trail race) before so, while the exact pacing type metrics wont translate I can potentially compare my times, depending on the similarity of other variables like weather. Even as I write this I wonder, even if I ran a faster time it doesn't mean I am in "good" marathon shape? Does it give me any feedback as to what to change or work on before the marathon? Probably not. Hmmmm maybe I just need to run a flat-ish road race of some sort to get a baseline. I realize I am more or less just thinking "aloud" but feel free to chime in if you have feedback. Think you're already coming to what I'm thinking to say. Sounds fine for getting back into a racing environment, but could be lacking as a predictor for the marathon (and fitness). How would it be for testing your off-road skill? Is that going to be much of a factor? It would be excellent for testing off-road skill however the marathon is MUCH more similar to a road race so it's not a factor, lol |

It may not be a great race to work on pacing but you could work on nutrition or, if there is a section of the half course that more closely mimics the marathon course, do a pacing interval there. I mean, you are obviously drawn to this race. ;-) What is A race? The marathon? The ultra? Both? TBD? I try to look at this with an eye towards who someone is. For a while, you ran for speed, to push yourself and to grow as a racer. Recently, that morphed into running for experience. 2 days on the trail, many mountain runs, Skimo, etc. And you are one of the people who most helped me define "goals". So, I look at the question with an eye towards your ever evolving growth. It seems to me you are kind of heading into a time where both the experience and the speed will be important. Janyne's questions resonate on that level. It looks like you want to do the race, as you are drawn to it. At the same time, you have another race in mind as the goal (A race). All that said, I think Ben and she hit the nail on the head. It may not be the best predictor or prep race for the marathon goal race, but it would help you get back to "the race". That should not be taken lightly. There are always things to work on in a race, especially for someone that approaches them the way you do. Great insight guys. Janyne, there really isn't an A race per se. I am running the marathon for time if that helps. My training will be much more specific to the marathon and the performance at the ultra will just be a result of that training. I think if I were training for the ultra only, my training wouldn't be a whole lot different anyway. I'm running upwards of 80 miles a week so there isn't a whole lot of room for more volume (time limitations.) I'd probably drop any M pace specific long runs a and opt for a little bit more distance but that would be the biggest change.
Maybe I can do the race just because I want to and just pick another one as more of a predictor. |

The above discussion about tires cracks me up! So. Proof of life post. My HM in Zion is this Saturday. I was thinking back and it was one of you Mad Manatees who got me hooked on the idea of doing this race back in 2014. Here I am, 18 months later, 4 days out from my first HM and it's all your fault! My training has been going well, even when I end up feeling like crud. Those lousy days remind me of how important good--and consistent--nutrition/hydration are and that going out slow isn't always a bad thing (despite what my dog thinks). I'm now officially signed up to do the run leg of the Boulder 70.3 in June and the long course Harvest Moon duathlon in September. I'm also officially freaking out about the du now that I've done the math and figured out how long it's going to take me to finish the thing. For some reason, I thought about the distances and figured, "I should be able to do that." Then I woke up at 3 a.m. earlier this week and thought, "OMG, that's going to take me north of 7 hours to finish. That's a long time to keep moving!!!" I don't know why I failed to consider that before. Guess I'm going to have to figure out a good nutrition plan and get a heck of a lot better about drinking water while riding my bike. Or just get faster. My eyes don't seem to be improving anymore, or if they are, I can't tell. My eye doctor wants to refer me for vision therapy but is waiting until I get accepted into the state Vocational Rehab program. I had an intake appointment with a voc rehab counselor in early February and still haven't heard whether I got in. I also had to drop out of choir again because seeing everybody swaying was making me nauseated and leaving rehearsal all the time was getting pretty demoralizing. I've had some down days, but between the training structure/goals and the inspires I get from you wonderful people, I'm managing to keep moving forward. Thank you, friends!! *waving vigorously* Hi Mary, we've missed you! Also, if any manatees want to join us, I've registered to do the aquabike at Harvest Moon. Yup, I'm headed to CO in Sept to see Mary and to race! I'll be there. Probably as a Sherpa, possibly as a du-er. I'm not making any decisions until after Moab. |

Ohhhh when are you going to Yosemite? What a special place. You should take a little time to read 'The Yosemite' or at least skim it.
Also, take a little time to learn about the Hetch Hetchy, too if you can. My environmentalist is showing but I think it is so important when experiencing the Yosemite Valley. Edited by Asalzwed 2016-03-10 2:20 PM |

I've lost 50 pounds since I started swimming and I still swim in Speedo Vanquishers and love them. I replace them every 3-4 months Congrats, indeed! I'd say it might be a good idea to try on new ones at the store. My own goggle fit changed between the slightly more Rubenesque version of myself (not quite a full Backstreet Boy heavier, but close enough) to my race weight (where a neighbor asked another in a whisper if I had cancer - seriously). I also don't much favor the "real swimmer" fit of Swedish goggles and the like - the ones that jam inside your eye socket and try to suck your eyeballs out (you can tell I'm an adult onset lap swimmer - open turns and all). So, those might fit either way - don't really know. I went to the store yesterday to get my tri-bike tuned (haven't ridden it since CapTex last May and a couple tires in the quiver needed re-glued) and tried on a bunch of goggles. Some fit differently even at my current weight - about 10 pounds over race weight (which I only ever hold for a month or so) - than last year during the peak (depths?) of long course training. My guess is everyone is different! Some might never change, others might have a different fit with only a few pounds difference if, like Chris' W, they lose weight in their face... Good luck. Maybe just a good excuse for more toys? Matt |

This week I have been fighting exhaustion, I have been dragging myself out of bed at about 7am (which is late for me, I'm normally up at 5:30). I feel like I haven't slept at all even though I haven't been awake during the night and I have had 7.5-8 hours of sleep. Do you think it is possible that this is a mental thing? Work has been flat out crazy mad since around the start of October last year. It is possible that I have been running on adrenaline for all of that time. The last really big jobs that needed to be done before Easter pretty much got crossed off my list last week. I am wondering if my brain has gone right: staffing is done, budgets are done, bus routes are done, school is up and running relatively smoothly, audit is pretty much finished, and there are no puppies coming in April So now you will sleep. Do you think this is possible? |

Ohhhh when are you going to Yosemite? What a special place. You should take a little time to read 'The Yosemite' or at least skim it.
Also, take a little time to learn about the Hetch Hetchy, too if you can. My environmentalist is showing but I think it is so important when experiencing the Yosemite Valley. <3 I'm still seeing a puff of air coming out your ear. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Closed Yep. I swear I run on adrenaline for entire school terms sometimes. On breaks I will happily sleep 10-11 hours a night. I normally get 7-8, but apparently my body would really like a bit more than that. Can also be a hormone thing for me--not sure about other women, though. As for goggles (too lazy to scroll back and see who asked), I swear by the Speedo Futura Biofuse. Have never found other goggles that consistently fit and don't leak too soon. Most of my Futuras have lasted over a year. I've always struggled with goggle fit as I have a smallish head but big eyes--men's goggles often are too big, but with "women's" models, the lenses don't comfortably fit over my eyes. Worst are those triangular shaped OWS goggles that TYR and Blue Seventy make--they just don't match up with my face bones at all. No leaking but super uncomfortable. Plus the eyes always seem to be too far apart on the men's models and too close together on the women's. I have fit issues with pretty much everything tri-related--suits, bikes, goggles--sometimes wonder if I was just made with the wrong pattern, or something! Edited by Hot Runner 2016-03-11 5:30 AM |
