I am pretty sure Mark will be ok.  I've lived near where he lives and that's pretty common weather for them if he bikes at all during the winter and I am sure he does.  I'll be interested in seeing who bailed before even starting though.  There are folks who never get to train in cold and for sure they would be felling the effects more then many

Mark had a 2 mile stretch where his average pace was 4.8 mph.  Hope he didn't have a flat and it's just a timing error.

Steep. All times for that stretch are slow

I finished 4th of 4 in my race today in a sprint finish.  It was a pretty straightforward race - basically we all rode together for 65k and duked it out in the end.  I really had no chance though as the other 3 were stronger and more experienced than me.  Brutal winds too.

AP 224w
NP 255w

65 km in 1:55 and change.

The crazy part (to me) is that the guy that won did it on an AP of only 182w.  He's probably 5 inches shorter than me and 20-30 lbs lighter.  Still seems like a big difference to me.  Clearly much better at hiding from the wind!

Actually, looks like there's two segments on that 2.2 mile climb.

To get an idea how hard the bike course is, I have a friend, multiple KQ, came out of the swim in 1:07, 31 in AG.   FInished bike in 5:57 and moved up to 10th (45-49)

Only a handful of pros with bike times under 5 hours.  Like I said - nasty!

Go Mark!

Bizarre
He doesn't have a final bike split or a first run split
But he has an entry as 2nd run split, but it seems wrong

Just now got in from our paddling trip.

Come on Mark, one foot in front of the other. Just keep those feet moving.

His last two splits were pretty consistent so he must have settled into a rhythm that is working.

At your height, I'm assuming you must produce a really nice draft.  Assuming you guys were rotating in the same order for most of the 65k, the guy who was behind you probably saved an additional 5-15 watts compared to drafting someone who isn't 7 feet tall

Something you probably need to be aware of in future races.  If you're trying to beat someone specifically (maybe you know the other 2 guys will drop you eventually...or you will drop them eventually), you probably don't want that specific person you're marking behind you getting additional draft benefit.

Just finished my biggest week.  Still have 5 more days of high volume and then it's taper time.

See the tri talk thread. It was a pretty effed up race. Will not be doing this course again, esp in September.

Sounds like pretty insane conditions Mark.  I can't imagine what that was like.

Congrats on getting it done!

To Jason's point - you stuck your nose in the wind too much compared to him and/or didn't hide enough.

Agree, congrats on getting through it!

Honestly, I can't even imagine.  I was uncomfortable coming out of the water and getting onto the bike in 50 degree weather....I can't even fathom the idea of doing that in near-freezing temps (with snow on the ground!).  Really sorry to hear about the unfortunate T1 incidents -- you are incredibly tough to continue in conditions like that!

Mark - sorry to read how miserable this race was.  I can understand why the dnf rate was so high based on your description.

The off-season is the best time to fine tune your skills and prepare yourself for the next season. It is also time for you to gain some strength and get a little rest after a long season of training.

If you develop a strategy for the off-season, you can go into the next season stronger than you ended the past season.
