Pro 3870 Virginia Beach, VA | Subject: RE: TH3_FRB cycling accident Got a potential lead today. Someone local happened to be at the same intersection this morning and saw a red Firebird being driven by a black woman make the same turn as when I was hit. Could just be a coincidence but people are creatures of habit so if this is her normal route (to/from work maybe) she may be dumb enough to keep driving it. We're going out there in the morning to sit and watch for a while. |

I said it before, but I'll say it again: You're an inspiration with how well you're handling this situation. More well wishes for a quick recovery. Oh, and give that @*&@+$ what she has coming to her (once you've confirmed it's her, of course). G'night |

Expert 900 Austin, TX | Subject: RE: TH3_FRB cycling accident Good to hear. Good luck on the "stakeout!" It wouldn't surprise me that someone dumb enough to hit and run would also be dumb enough to continue to drive in the same location. |

Champion 6539 South Jersey | Subject: RE: TH3_FRB cycling accident Just skimmed through some of the other posts, and I think I saw someone mentioned reaching out to the media. The media loves this sort of stuff; I highly recommend reaching out to your local papers. If you go to their Web sites or call the main number, you will probably be able to find the reporter/editor best suited for this. Or, you can email to the main email address (probably news@.... or info@....). Just use a catchy subject, like "Unsolved hit and run." Or "Hit and Run Victim Needs Your Help." Or, you can write a Letter to the Editor. TVs another beast and probably a little difficult to break in your market....especially since the accident didn't happen 5 minutes ago. But, your local FOX affiliate might be one to cover something like this. Hard to tell. The more people you get the news to, the greater your chance of finding someone that witnessed it or can lead you to who it was. Who knows, at that point, the guilty person may even come forward. |

Master 1889 Ann Arbor, MI | Subject: RE: TH3_FRB cycling accident This is a tradgedy, but I have to admit I agree that the stakeout sounds a bit cloak and dagger. What if *you* tip the police? You're your own hero! I am disgusted that the police have not reached out to the local media. |

I am sure there a lot of good 'cops' out there . . . and a number of BTers who are such. But my experience with local police have been similar. My own attitude about law enforcement has changed dramatically. Good luck with the stakeout. |

Mesa | Subject: RE: TH3_FRB cycling accident Ditto on the police not seeming to care about bicycle accidents. Not to offend any police, but a lot of officers seem to have their own agenda.... maybe they need to fill their quotas and bicycles have nothing to do with them. (They would not come out when I was hit last week) Joel, good luck with your detective work and recovery. "T.O." recovery time!!!! |

Giver 18427 | Subject: RE: TH3_FRB cycling accident I'm just catching up on this thread and there's one thing that stuck out from Joel's first post-surgical post that I think is a good "'teachable moment" for all of us (me included, cause I never do what he mentioned): Joel said he had his ID and insurance info with him. And that's a really, really great thing to have. First of all, ID is so important is you're serisouly injured. Imagine if he had been unconscious...it would have been hours and hours before Katie knew about it. And without his insurance card, he probably would have been treated as if he had no insurance. So, starting today, I carry my ID and insurance card. |

Expert 798 Potomac, Maryland | Subject: RE: TH3_FRB cycling accident Joel - My best wishes for a full and prompt recovery. If things don't start coming together with media and police doing more to help find the hit-and-run driver, you might consider contacting your local congressman/woman. They are powerful figures in their home constituency and can certainly make people get off the dime. Yours is a deserving story and would be just the kind of thing they should find worthy of their attention. |

I'm just reading the thread--Joel, I'm so sorry about the accident, but your positive attitude is a great inspiration! Good Luck, and speedy recovery, sounds like your well on your way. I was thinking just what Jim said--you're teaching us all the time I don't do much road riding yet, but I'm ordering a ROAD ID today! Take Good care! We're all thinking about you. |

Pro 3870 Virginia Beach, VA | Subject: RE: TH3_FRB cycling accident I typically stick my insurance card, ID, cell phone, and maybe a couple dollars in the back of my cycling jersey. It can't hurt to have it all with you just in case something goes wrong. I carry the phone more because I've been stranded more than once with mechanical/tire problems and needed a ride home. I've been meaning to get a Road ID for when I'm running. |

You've been a great source on insight and encouragement for this newbie and I was horrified when I read that you had been hit. I know you will recover fast and strong. Use a mental picture of that be-otch that hit you as something to focus on-run her down! My condolences and best wishes for you... |

Veteran 251 Burbs north of Chicago | Subject: RE: TH3_FRB cycling accident I was talking to my spin instructor after class today. He moved to the Chicago area from Texas about 18 months ago. He told me that a close friend and training partner from Texas died in a hit and run bike accident last week. Here is the story: http://keyetv.com/topstories/local_story_107151300.html Joel, this is not meant to freak you out (though all these stories are making me really think), but I thought the hit and run theme was worth mentioning. It is just sickening. The amazing thing here is that the person who ran was probably really not at fault. The driver of the van that clipped her did stop (according to my spin instructor). Anyway, I thought you would be interested. |

Anyway, I thought you would be interested. Not to threadjack but... I heard about this woman's death from some people down here when it happened. For some reason it seems that Austin has had a lot of bad luck with cyclists lately. I swear it feels like at least once a month somebody there is killed, and people injured more often than that. I think there was another hit and run that happened in Austin a couple of days after this woman was killed, but this time the cyclist lived thank god. It seems odd to me because Austin seems the most bike friendly city in Texas. Living in San Antonio I will not even THINK about taking my road bike out here. I drive out of the city to go road biking. Such a shame. Edited by fattyboombalatty 2006-04-25 4:30 PM |

Pro 3870 Virginia Beach, VA | Subject: RE: TH3_FRB cycling accident We sat at the intersection this morning and saw a red camaro (most people couldn't tell the difference between a Camaro and Firebird) with a black woman driving make the same turn at 8am. Seems to match with the lead I got yesterday. We wrote down the plate info...it doesn't match what was turned in by the witness but you never know. This could all just be a coincidence but I'll let the detectives decide. I also called a lawyer that was suggested by a police officer on a local triathlon forum. Left some info with his para-legal. |

Subject: RE: TH3_FRB cycling accident Hi Joel, I have kind of been following your ordeal here and I want to say how bad I feel for your accident. It's one thing to be in a biking accident, but to be the victim of a hit and run jsut adds a whole bunch of rage to the issue....horrible. Anyways, I am keeping track to see if that cowardly "lady" gets caught and gets what's coming to her. Keep your chin up, you will be back out there in no time! Ivan |

Pro 3870 Virginia Beach, VA | Subject: RE: TH3_FRB cycling accident No info on the actual investigation but we finally got a local news crew to come over today and do an interview. Should be on the 5pm news locally on WAVY 10. She was asking me about how my plans have changed for the summer and this was the first time I started to get choked up when thinking about the fact that I won't be racing at all this season. When Colonial HIM got dropped I changed my focus to qualifying for the 70.3 Championship in Nov. and I just now kind of realized that I won't be competing for anything this season. I hope to be back on my feet and doing a few races in the fall but those will be more about just getting out there and finishing. |
