Well, I must say I am very impressed. The accident that happened to Joel was just shy of tragic, but the overwhelming support of BTers is not to be denied. Joel, glad to see you are home and recovering. Although we have not crossed paths here on BT, from what I have read, you will be making the doctors and thearapist shake there head at your speedy recovery. Good luck with the recovery and btw, that was a $12,000 all carbon bike you were ridding that needs to be replaced on her dime right?

At least you are in good company, you can now swap war stories with Karen Smyers. She just one ups you with a close encounter with an 18 wheeler though

Glad to hear the update and that you are in good spirits.  The best thing you can do....and I KNOW this is going to be hard and frustrating is to USE YOUR CRUTCHES AND DON'T WALK ON THAT PUPPY until your orthopod says OK.  Take care and your triceps will be extra buff from using the crutches

A bit of an update on the hunt for Miss Hit & Run.  The police seem to be dropping the ball a bit here.  As of yesterday (Fri) the report still hadn't been filed in the computers...that's 48 hours...and we can't get in touch with the officer that was on the scene.  Katie finally got a detective from the auto crimes division on the phone and he said that hit and run reports are supposed to be filed immediately so that a detective can be sent to the scene.  The cop that was there offered to take my bike home for me which seemed nice enough so I told him to go ahead.  Katie took it down to Final Kick the next day to let them look it over and assess the damage.  Apparently the bike should never have left the scene without a detective looking at it.  The cop that took my report also told me that it had to be treated as an auto accident and asked me a few questions about the make and year of my bike...like it was a car or something.  This was in the ambulance at the scene so I wasn't really thinking that it seemed screwy.  Well apparently the cop has been off the past few days which is why we can't get in touch with him.  Seems he didn't bother to finish filing my report before he took some time off.  The detective found a copy of my report that looks to be missing a lot of info and doesn't have anything on the identity of the driver or her plate #...which the cop told me we had.  So now I'm left to wait for Monday when the cop returns to work to find out WTF is going on.  If we can't find this woman because the police botched the report/investigation I'm going to be SOOOO pissed.  Nothing I can do now but wait and hope it was just some mis-communication at the police department and that everything is in order...but that still doesn't explain why my H&R report wasn't filed promptly.

Geez now that REALLY sux Joel...I can't believe they are taking it so lightly.  There is another thread about a guy who got hit (on BT) and they refused to even send an officer to the scene.  If you weren't on a bike I woonder if they would be doing the same thing.  Call the local news people or something and get some action

This doesn't sound good. Joel, you need to talk to a cop or a lawyer who's very experienced with this sort of thing.

Wow! With a hit and run that causes serious injury I would have thought that they would be all over it. In fact, I would think that it would have been reported to the media so people would be looking for the car. Hopefully this will work out once the officer is back on duty. And I REALLY hope they got that licence plate #.

I agree with Marma and runningfoo, you were in a serious accident and action needs to be taken against the officer/detective that didn't file the report and said it was ok to take your bike. Ugh.

I'm going to remain calm (relatively) till we hear from the cop on Monday.  At that point I'll decide what my next step should be.  Katie is ready to contact the local news channels and get some sort of story on the air if the police don't have things under control.  Seems like a good story to me...local athlete finishes in top 3% at Boston marathon and is invloved in a H&R while recovering...police botch investigation and driver is never found leaving victim to suffer with fractured pelvis and medical bills, ending his promising triathlon season.

That is one lazy cop. In my department if we have a report to do and there is a possibility of an offender being caught we have to finish before we leave, it could be a criminal damage to property, battery or hit-n-run. A hit-n-run with injury in my state is a felony and if there is plate information we are required to have it broadcast state wide within an hour of the incident. If this driver hasn't been named, address found or caught I doubt they have the information unless this cop is so incompetant he doesn't know what he is doing. I would be curious to hear what the cop has to say about it tomorrow.

Okay, Katie talked to the cop this morning.  She didn't get into why the report wasn't completed or why detectives weren't sent to the scene.  I'm pissed about that stuff but right now we need everyone on our side so I don't want to start getting pissy...yet.  He said that witnesses got a plate but when they look it up it comes back as a green car registered in some other town.  We know for sure it was a red car and witnesses said it was a Firebird but I'm not sure I agree with that.  I honestly don't have any idea what kind of car it was but a Firebird is awful low in the front and I probably would have remembered something like that because I would have seen broken ankles flash through my head just before impact.  I'm feeling like it was some other type of car but I could be wrong.  At any rate, we have plate that doesn't match the car at the scene.  We're going to go drive around the neighborgood in the next day or two...who knows, we might get lucky.  This wasn't an area where you'd get a lot of non-local traffic.  So as of now it's not looking great for finding the driver but it's too soon to give up.  More updates when available...

I'd say go ahead and try to get a media report out of it...but don't include the botched cop job in the media information. That part of the story, as unbelievable as it is, won't help you find the driver. People will want to help in any way possible.

Not to minimize teh cops bad job...but that is a distinct issue from finding the car. The cop shoudl be dealt with to, and figure out why he did things the way he did. If there is inadequate training for the local cops on how to handle bike accidents, that needs to be dealt with at a higher level. If the cop was trainied, and was just lazy or stupid, that's an entirely different scenario as well!

Joel, You may consider posting a sign at the intersection where the
accident occurred. Mention hit & run, the date, and ask for witnesses to
call if they have info that may help, at least to verify the car make, model and color. Maybe post the same thing in some windows of nearby businesses. Just an idea. It worked for
an aquaintance of mine a couple of years ago.

You seem to be handling this much better than many people. Hang in there and
heal quickly!!

Wow Joel! First, glad you had a successful surgery and are home on the road to recovery. I say, Go Katie...call the local news! That sucks about the H&R, and if the public knows the story more people might come forward. I'll send good vibes that they catch this driver! How totally frustrating!

Joel, I just saw this thread today and I wanted to throw in my good vibes and good wishes.   Regardless of whether they find her, you need to get better so keep focusing on that.  That's the most important (although like everyone here I'd like to find her and and string her up too....)

Posting signs requesting info is a good idea.

Another idea would be, hang around the intersection around the same time of day as the accident, if you think you would recognize the car or driver or see a vehicle that has damage from hitting the bike. People are creatures of habbit.

 Good luck.

I haven't been online this past weekend, and just saw this thread. I'm glad the surgery went well and you are still here.I was just tell some friends about watching your results from Boston this weekend, and the goosebumps I kept getting. I wish I lived nearby to physically help, like hunting this animal down. (not meant to offend any animals of nature or Bear) If you're going the media route I suggest find someone who is also a runner or biker. (they would be a little more passionate about this).

Good Luck and I'll keep praying for you.

Mul98 and pbarbato are attorneys ( I think ) and active on BT.  Perhaps if you PM them they can get you to the right people or moving in the right direction.

Joel, I just read about this.

It's great that you can look at the best side of things. As most others have said, focus on the recovery and we're pulling for you.

I'm going to check out the other threads. Let me/us know if there is anything that we can do to help.
