Master 9705 Raleigh, NC area | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! Artemis - 2012-12-25 10:03 AM I am heading off to Wisconsin later today. Already determined that I can join a gym near my parents for $25 for the week. I'm too much of a wimp to run outside there now. My lungs couldn't handle it and I don't have the right clothing for that. Good plan! I know what you mean about the clothing. There are some temperatures that I certainly could ride or run in but I have elected not to buy the gear for the two weekends a year that I would need it. Basically that means rides above 32 and runs above 25 or so. It just makes sense for me to spend my training dollars on something that I'd get more use of. P.S. Santa was good to me! Gift card to local bike shop! Woo hoo! |

Master 2770 Central Kansas | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! Happy Birthday, Janyne! Merry Christmas to all. I got a short run in this afternoon. It was a bit miserable -- 18F with 20-29 mph winds. Not as cold, even with the wind chill (1-3F), as some of you have been running in, but cold enough. I actually felt pretty good, if it hadn't have been for such a horrible wind. Putting my roast in now. Dinner in a couple hours. I've not been very motivated to cook. Everyone seems satisfied playing with their Christmas toys, so I'm not pushing food. |

After we unloaded the car I hopped on my bike and went for a 45 minute cold windy (the silent Manatee training partners) ride. Now I'm back home in my warm house, thinking I'll enjoy some of the spiced wine and chocolate my German brother sent. :-D |

Veteran 2441 Western Australia | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! Happy Birthday Jayne. I hope you had a great day. Another day of 100+ here they are forecasting it to continue until Tuesday next week, my dogs are not happy I did cadence intervals on the trainer this morning. Another noobie question when I do this I have been doing 1 minute at 100+ in a relatively easy gear, while trying to make sure that I don't bounce as I do it and then a minute of 70+ recovery in a harder gear. Is that how i am supposed to do it or am i supposed to keep it in the same gear? I am trying to ensure that I maintain a speed of at least 22km per hour all the way through which isn't fast I know but for me it's a bit of a push. |

Regular 980 Caerphilly, Wales, uk. | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! That sounds about right what you're doing there Stacey. I use trainer road, and their cadence work uses the same process, i.e. keeping the same watts whilst increasing/decreasing your cadence. The only way I can keep the power consistent would be to alter the resistance/gear. I suppose you use speed as an indicator of effort instead of power. |

I am trying to ensure that I maintain a speed of at least 22km per hour all the way through which isn't fast I know but for me it's a bit of a push. It really depends on what you're wanting to get out of doing cadence intervals. A few thoughts: To me, reasons to do work at higher cadences are: 1. To have that as an extra cycling mode for yourself There's nothing inherently magical or desirable about high cadences. Or low ones. Or any given ones, for that matter. If you want to set up doing cadence work as the type of interval where you're working hard at the higher cadence, such that you NEED a recovery interval, then the recovery interval shouldn't be at a tougher gear. If the gearing is correct, you shouldn't bounce in the saddle at any cadence. As you accrue riding distance, your body will naturally self-select cadences that work well at gears you're comfortable with. Find out what range of cadences and gearing will allow you to sustain a given speed (what you're doing). So the basic question is, at what cadence/gears am I able to hold a speed for the longest? That range of cadences may also change over time as you accrue even more distance. |

I felt somewhat better after my 5 mile run this morning but jeez. The only thing that kept me from getting sick is it was 25 degrees with 15 mph wind. If it was hot it would have been bad. Back to healthy eating for me. |

That would be like running a color run but avoiding all of the paint. |

Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! ACK! Hi, manatees, both new and returning! No, I didn't fall off the face of the earth; over the holidays I was only logging and not venturing into the forums and didn't realize that we started. Should I be surprised that I am 11 pages late to the party?! Not with this group! Again, welcome new manatees!! I will try was going to sum up my past 4 days of absence in pictures but I can't seem to (grrr), so use your imagination: I baked cookies for the dogs (imagine a tray of round little treats, fresh out of the oven) I biked to the river (imagine my husband's bike, which I stole for riding outside in the winter since mine is on the trainer, leaning against a cast-iron fence with the beautiful Susquehanna river flowing in the background and the hills of York county also as backdrop) I ran on the rail trail in the morning (no pics, sorry). It snowed Christmas eve, just around 2" (imagine my little multi-colored lighted tree next to a white-lighted, skiing snowman, both covered with snow on my snow-covered lawn) I ran Christmas day, enjoying the sights of the snow-covered town (imagine the huge, living, decorated, snow-covered town Christmas tree as well as the town clock and the fence around them both festively festooned with garlands and wreaths).
