for most i'd say this is surprising george.  not for you though.  its all about your avatar.  first its those guns you got.  then its the wondering how bad the person who took the pic sh+t their pants when they realized you were coming to kick their a$$.  that is what you're about to do... right?

wait....   hasta la vista baby!

awesome!

Uhhhh...I should clarify...my 7 year old will be wrestling, I will be yelling my head off from the sidelines coaching him and the rest of the team.

And yeah, I was on my way to kick their a$$ Innocent

HOLA......What's on tap this weekend?  a little race? some big training? DO TELL!

I'll kick it off...no racing, but I am a bachelorette this weekend so lots of biking, a couple of test run/walk efforts; foot permitting and some fun girl stuff--a facial and a massage!  Today is a swim lesson with SJ.

Oh and I am on the count down to Mexico....only 10 days to go!

Hasta La Vista,
Suzy

Probably nothing for me this weekend.  Skiing on Saturday morning, charity event on Saturday night, wrestling tournament all day Sunday.  Possibly a run or trainer ride Sunday night depending on when we get home.  I am about due for a rest day anyway so I will call half a day of skiing and a night of dancing my rest day Laughing

Remember back in the day when a  'rest day' was after a night of drinking, waking up at noon eating McDonalds and laying on the couch all day?? All that changes when the kids come. No such thing as a day off now.

And wrestling? I'm going to go with "Whatcha gonna do brotha' when Hulkamania runs wild on you?"

I was more of a George the Animal Steel fan...loved the green toung and how he liked to eat the turnbuckle!

Your description of a rest day sounds much better than mine!

John, Happy Birthday.  Good timing I guess.  Best friend turned 36 yesterday and Cali turns 5 tomorrow.  We were fortunate to never have had sick kids.  Although last night Tiller, Delaney, and I were laughing about them both puking at school.  They have both puked in the same teacher's class (kindergarten) and the teacher does NOT want my family to go 3 for 3 (Cali starts next year).  I also found out that they have both puked at least one time at school, but not told anyone and stayed at school.

Paul, my guess is UT is catching a break with Kiffin leaving.  I think he's a major violation waiting to happen.

Suzy, wonderful news.  Glad to hear things are going well.  No compliments in 7 months - you are persistent - not sure many people could work on something that long with no compliments.

Steve, where is that ring picture?  I have to see a softball ring.

Kyla, love the "Drunk running guy"  Wasn't that the guy running from the cops in college?

Trina, I used to set the TM to 2% incline for running.  Transition to outdoors was tough.  But once I got into it I sold the TM.

Tony, let us know how long it takes for 1. to puke or 2. your legs explode on the bike tonight.

dalessit - 2010-01-14 7:59 AM ugh, my coach fixed the Computrainer workout for me, I was looking at the file he sent.

you can build your own workouts, i.e. x amount of time at y watts.  I opened the file and saw lots of stuff over 300 watts and some over 400...

Going to be a fun sweaty evening...

I would say that I am definitely on a bike heavy program.

Have fun with that!  Be sure and bring a bucket....

Thanks for all the info and suggestions, everyone! I really do appreciate it. I was so disheartened, and actually woke this morning a little depressed about it all.

Time to bite the bullet and run outside three times a week until it gets easier, even if I do feel like my lungs are going to explode and my legs are going to fall off. Sheer attrition. It's like swimming - at first I could barely swim 25 yards, now I'm able to string together 200 yards without stopping to rest- in 6 weeks.

I'm thinking I'm going to concentrate on my swim/run and only get in one long bike ride a week for a while. And when I do have to go inside on the TM, I will set the incline to 1% and see if that makes a difference. Again, thanks for the input!

sounds good Trina. remember to take small steps ( how punny of me) when increasing your distance. It will take some time but you will be far better off doing small increments in all three disciplines.  If you increase too fast you run the risk of 1) injury and 2) just plain tired and I don't want to do this syndrome.

tahrens - 2010-01-13 1:22 PM I'm a little late but.....supplements.  I take OTC Iodine (Iodoral) supplements.  No thyroid problems but the chlorine used in pools binds to the same receptors as idodine; therefore your body can develop an iodine deficiency if in the pool a lot.  I notice a big improvement in my attention, metabolism and sleep habits when I take my iodine.  Also take either whey protein or recovery shakes after hard workouts.  I feel so much better the next day!

I am planning on taking the Animal Pack (multi-vitamin geared for bodybuilding and heavy athletic activity). I also picked up a carb powder to use prior to long runs, swims and bike rides (long for me is quite short but still..) and other then that I am just trying to control my diet.

Thanks Suzy!   Gifts... Hopefully a not so sick baby!  I do think she's on the mend so this is good.  I'm hoping to give myself a nice run Sunday so I can come back up here at yap at Sam, Kelly, our resident lurker (yeah Matt I'm talking about you).  I'd love a shot at Kyla but I really doubt that.  The likes of you, George, Kim, etc.. are still a long ways away.

Question for the swimmers...when the author talks about a deeper pull, does that literally mean just deeper in the water?

Hey guys, just a quick post this morning.  Things have been busy at work this week with classes starting up again next Tuesday - lots of students coming in to pick up last minute classes and get their bills paid.  I'm looking forward to having Monday off!

I had a great swim this morning!  Averaged a little over 3:00/100m - still really slow compared to most of you, but pretty fast for me.  If I can just get my butt to the pool a little more often, I'm hoping to improve even more.  I think I'm going to start doing actual planned workouts instead of just swimming laps every time.  I've got a plan printed out at home, just haven't started using it yet.  I guess because every time I've tried to do some of the drills, I feel like an idiot who doesn't know what she's doing, lol!

I'll try to get back later to catch up with things, but before I go...

Happy Birthday John!  Have a good one!

Janet

Here is a question for you- Why can't you use DURING your long swims, bikes, or runs?  I often mix Carbo Pro (same powder mix) and a tab of NUUN, or a shot of powder Gatorade.  Anything over 90 minutes running or 2 hrs biking I use this stuff DURING.

Here is what Carbo Pro says (I ignore the post workout- I usually make a protein shake, or something like that post):

CARBO-PRO: before, during, and after training!
The easiest way to achieve correct carb nutrition is to divide carbohydrate intake into three categories: carbs before exercise, carbs during exercise, and carbs after exercise.

Solid carbs (food sources) need time to digest, therefore it becomes essential to take in the first solid carbs at least 3 hours prior to exercise. If its a carbohydrate replacement drink - glucose polymers (CARBO-PRO) it should be taken at least 30-45 minutes before exercise. By doing so you would be able to raise blood glucose and improve performance.

Some athletes suffer intestinal distress if they eat solid carbs (food sources) on the day of competition. If you have sensitive guts you can always safely take up to 200 grams of carbs before races in the form of a carbohydrate replacement drink (CARBO-PRO + water or juice). Habitually take at least 58 grams (2 oz.) of CARBO-PRO at least 30-45 minutes before a training session or a race.

Once the exercise begins, the minimum level of carb intake required to maintain and improve performance is 40 grams (1.5 oz.) per hour. Evidence suggests that the increased blood glucose levels that result from taking complex carbs throughout exercise, permit a higher overall rate of carbohydrate use throughout. We recommend 70-90 grams per hour as optimum. To achieve that level you need to drink a bit over a quart of CARBO-PRO per hour. DO NOT USE SOLID FOODS!! They deplete your water, hydration is always your first priority.

To maintain carb intake of 70-90 grams per hour during exercise, you need to drink a lot, about one 8 oz. glass every fifteen minutes. Carrying a dispenser bottle and sipping repeatedly is definitely the best way. Elite cyclists, triathletes and long distance runners often carry two or three bottles and change them frequently at aid stations. Sip a 5-10% of CARBO-PRO solution at a rate of 1 quart (35 oz.) per hour during exercise.

In designing your carbohydrate nutrition, the primary goal should be to achieve the highest levels of muscle glycogen between the finish of one session of exercise and the start of the next. To do this you have to begin eating carbs immediately after you finish a session. There are excellent studies which show that muscle glycogen synthesis after exercise occurs in two phases - a very rapid rate of synthesis for about 4-6 hours (most rapid in the first 2 hours), then a much slower rate for the next 24 hours.

The most rapid rate of glycogen synthesis occurs immediately after exercise because the low level of glycogen remaining in the muscles, stimulates activity of an enzyme called glycogen synthase that controls glycogen storage. Carbs have to be provided at the same time when glycogen synthase is active. The amount and type of carbs are extremely important. The maximum rate of synthesis in the first four hours after exercise occurs by feeding 112 grams (4 oz.) of CARBO-PRO in 20 oz. of water. Therefore take at least 112 grams (4 oz.) of CARBO-PRO in water immediately after exercise.
