I'll be doing my power tests soon also.  My best 5 min was 336w, don't remember on 20... 260ish I think.  I expect I'll have a huge gap to regain, after my medical issues.

Put it this way, at IM Canada last summer I averaged 143 watts (side note: I'm very surprised I went sub-6 on that).  But yeah.. it's going to be a long recovery I think

Fred D - 2012-12-03 9:16 PM I posted something in my blog today, I would ask members of the group to read it if they have time. I would love if this group were to continue, but I am stepping away. So don't let it die if you don't want, but I am done on the forums on BT. Read blog. Apologies.

I can't seem to access your blog

313w for the 5' test this morning, 8w higher than I have ever tested - I'm stoked!  332w for the last minute too so I think I had a bit left in the tank at the end.

What does everyone have on the plan today?

Morning! Swim planned today. Need to figure out where I should go. Can't wait to swim in the outdoor pool in Lahaina in 14 days! COUNTOWN! (oh and I suppose swimming in the ocean will be nice too)

I remember sitting on our lanai in Lahaina watching the humpback whales breeching right off the beach.  Incredible!  You will be there right at the start of the season, maybe they will be out for you too.

Got my run done finally.  Sure glad I waited for it to warm up, the wind is a little chilly.  It was like night and day from the run out to the run back to the house.  But shorts and a t-shirt in Dec.  Where as I would have been all bundled up if I went in the morning

So, anyone know which thread Fred got into trouble for?    Poor guy, hes been told to stay out of TT>  Fred, no worries, we'll keep the light on for you.

I will be sending you a direct link, but I'll be posting something on cheating at HITS on ST and also here, I'd love to hear Fred's and the group's input, although I think I kow what it would be.

Funny, when Fred was posting about his issues with cheating, I was more along the lines of live and let live, bad karma for them, gotta race my race only, etc., but an ofline discussion with the person on ST that I probably respect the most has convinced me that I was wrong.  We have to protect our sport, and even though officials may not be watching you, we are, and we will post about it.  If it turns into an internet trial, so be it.  Easy to solve by playing by the rules.

I think I'm ready do to some baseline power testing soon.  I had a 5 minute PB of 366 this past summer, and 311 for 20 minutes on a long climb (both on road bike).  I tried a 5 minute all out effort last week (after doing about 30 minutes at 250) and hit 315.  I've got a long way to go...

I think I took at least a 50 watt hit to my FTP, but all things considered it could've been much worse.  And I haven't even attempted 5 minute power since early in the summer, just to err on the side of caution.

Even without the health problems, we all need time to recharge so don't worry about some dropoff in the offseason.  It's better than burning yourself out.  Well ok maybe some people can work hard 365 days a year but not me

Pretty sure it is the one Tom posted about the hospital bill which turned into a conversation about healthcare and nothing about triathlons.  Fred just pretty much called that fact out, but took a small (deserved) jab at Tom as well

Thanks Kim, but I have to laugh.  So Fred speaks the truth about Tom and the non realtion to triathlon, mods move it (agreeing with him), and still send him a nasty note

Still don't get why they continue to allow certain folks to blatantly use BT do their online marketing research for them.

Yeah...I'm all to familiar with the off season drop off.  I'm actually much stronger on the bike now than I was last year at this time since I'm not marathon training.

Back in the pool today, after a very long break. I was slow(er) than my normal, but it still felt wonderful. I may try to get to the Y a couple times over Christmas break to swim.

Yeah...I don't get it either.  At first I thought that Fred was overreacting a little and should just let it go, but it's really starting to irritate me now...sigh...

Yeah, I don't get the direction Ron is going really.  I am guessing perhaps one moderator in particular might be placing a bug in Ron's ear and Ron doesn't really like to hear negative things about anything he is doing, even if it is something that he should address.  Just a guess though

It might also be his intervention in the Chrissie thread. Doesn't really matter. I think it's just a symptom of a bigger problem.

The knowledgeable posters are being banned/driven away because they speak the truth and the void gets filled with a lot of BS. When someone calls someone out on the BS, they get a PM from the mods

Good stuff! If I even take a week off, my swim takes a major dive. I am guessing it is because I started swimming late in life (5 years ago). I'm afraid to stop swimming because it took me sooo long to get where I am. Of course, I have scaled way back but I still feel that I need 2-3 short sessions per week or I lose it all.

axteraa - 2012-12-04 10:50 AM No, there is no 5' hard effort listed in the test protocol and I don't think there ever were any in Jorge's program either when I followed that.

I am completely guessing here and Shane can correct/add to this but I'm guessing it is because they are using the critical power model of both a 20' and 5' test on different days rather than just a straight up 95% of a 20' test (is that how TR and EN does it?)

Again, I am just speculating....

This is it; the CP model uses a short and long test to estimate the anaerobic work capacity. Since the AWC should be completely recovered between the two tests, the contribution in both efforts from the AWC should be the same so it can be "removed" from the results and CP can be calculated. The 5' blow out effort before an FTP test is essentially to clear out the AWC so that the test is based upon a purely threshold effort as opposed to having that AWC for an extra push. Shane

Thanks for the explanation Shane.

I'm the same way, which is why I am really not liking this year in Payson with no pool.  Frown

...it isn't any single post from Tom that'll get you to explode, it's if you happen to read an accumulated volume of his BS...after awhile it's enough...It is almost as if the guy purposely just focuses on coming up with polarizing non-contributing things he finds amusing because he has nothing to better to do.  I purposely stopped reading anything he posts awhile ago.

Unfortunately, as you note, the people best suited to give advice get pushed away because the over riding culture here is thin skinned and can't handle truth.  I tried to stop reading the main forum as much.  I can't tell you how many times I've typed a post and deleted it before posting.  Luckily people like Shane and the very few others still take the time to respond to a lot of the questions...

I'll be sorry to see Fred go.  Will definitely check in on his blog.  I actually read ST a lot more than I read BT.  As crude as it gets there actually is knowledge in there.

What's funny is that you seem to be following the exact model BT has set up.  Come to this site as a beginner looking for knowledge.  But as you learn more, we don't need you as much...and once you learn enough, you may as well be on your way because we only cater to the beginners.  This is after all BEGINNER Triathlete.

Ok...some of that is in pink...but still...

I'm on the same path.  Just waiting for my term to expire.  I made that choice when they banned Bryan but then wouldn't even have a dialog with him about it.

I try to be helpful but it is frustrating when the mods won't deal with people posting outright falsehoods.  See: noelle1230 on any thread involving the evils of sugar, for example.  If you smack them down, the mods go after you.  But these folks can keep spewing crap and beginners take it for truth.  Terrible.
