Master 8248 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Closed Yeah chocolate! Due to issues with gu, last year I started experimenting with dark chocolate on the bike. I used it as part of my bike nutrition for Vietnam 7.3 last year, and as my ONLY bike nutrition for Toughman (plus two gus on the run). It was fine, even at the latter race when I discovered a few chunks still hanging out in my bento box and shoved them into my mouth in T2. I even roll the choice in salt as a substitute for salt tabs! I do suggest you experiment a bit before racing, though. Melting can be a problem, some kinds of chocolate might go down better than others (would suggest dark, maybe with a filling like mint to add some extra carbs, as milk chocolate has more fat--harder to digest and melts faster), and the extra fat, even in dark chocolate, can cause GI issues for some people. For me it works much better as a steady energy source--I was having major issues with gagging and nausea whenever I exceeded 2-3 gus in longer rides/races, and the combo of something solid to chew on and the fat, which seems to slow the rate at which I absorb the sugar, seemed to do the trick. I would not use them in shorter races, however. Just don't think I could get down anything solid at Oly intensity. |

Janyne , I have a pair of CW-X compression socks because I love their running tights and tri shorts. I hate the socks because they are way too long. I do love their sleeves, though. My cat bite is pretty much scabbed over so I'm allowed to get in the pool. I swam yesterday and my arms were not sure what to think. The tetanus shot area on my arm looks like my husband punched me. Almost a week later and I still have a bump the size of a pea where the shot was. Hope everyone has a great Easter! |

It is good, but wonder how it would hold up in the heat. I would also manage to gain weight and go broke if that became my main source. |

With the CEP sock toe jamming, I was able to work it out by leaving just the right amount extra at the bottom. Enough for the little space to move, but not so much to bunch up. I wasn't sure about the ankle swelling that always seemed to happen with the sleeves, trapping things down there. Sometimes they could almost disappear. |

Master 8248 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Closed Ritter is called "Sport" because it has a higher melt point than most chocolate, and is marketed in Germany as food for hikers--sadly, this is probably due to the palm oil used in making it. In tropical conditions, if I pre-freeze it, even if it sits in transition, it will last about 2 hours into the bike before total meltdown occurs. (Yes, there is a certain amount of licking fingers involved.) Melting's never been an issue if temps are under about 80 or so--Mom and I have been trekking and biking in Europe with this stuff for decades with typical summer temps there. For daily (okay, not daily, but sometimes pretty close!) indulgence, I generally eat something more healthy and eco-friendly--a French company here called Marou makes amazing single-origin dark chocolate bars from beans grown in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. It's expensive (about $5 a bar) so that keeps my chocolate habit from getting out of hand! |

Quick update: my dad was put in the hospital last Saturday night because he was having suicidal thoughts. They put him in a senior care unit instead of the adult behavioral (psych) unit, for which I'm really grateful. He was released today. There was a bit of a scare when they said he was having short-term memory problems. Cognitive testing ruled out any abnormalities so he "only" has depression and anxiety. He's never been treated for either (those are for "weak people" - thanks, Dad) but he clearly has both. Hopefully he'll keep taking the antidepressant they gave him in the hospital and follow up on some of the hospital's recommendations. No telling; we'll just have to see. I had a fantastic race on 3/12 in Zion. It was quite appropriate that my first HM started in Virgin, UT. Writing up a RR might take me awhile so here's a little summary. Pre-race was a little rough. Rain made the starting area a total mud pit so I had to scrape an extra pound off each foot before the start. The rain stopped before the race started and the scenery was spectacular with mist and clouds shrouding the tops of the canyon walls. The sun came in and out too, which just added to the beauty. I ran with my friend and at every mile we high fived and whooped. Aside from a few aches and pains, I felt great the whole way, powering up the hills that looked really intimidating when we drove them. We averaged a little over 11:00/mile and our last mile was 10:11!! At mile 7.5, there was a herd of cows facing the road and mooing at us. I'm sure they were cheering us on. At mile 12.5, I asked my friend if she wanted to leave it all out on the course and of course she said yes. We took off and flew into the finish. It was totally amazing!! I finished 55/166 in my AG--top 3rd!!! I felt great afterward too, enough so that the next day I was able to explore the park with DH. Unfortunately, I lost a toenail because a bunch of fluid built up underneath it. It then got infected so I'm now taking antibiotics and can't run because it's ouchy. Given that we just got over 19" of snow and will be getting another 3-6" tonight and tomorrow, I'm not really missing anything. My eyes aren't any better. Doing computer work is still hard. Anything more than an hour and I have a headache and nausea for the rest of the day. Same with driving, watching TV, etc. As long as I stay in my house and away from a lot of visual stimulation, I'm fine. NOT an option for the long-term!!! I finally got accepted into the state vocational rehabilitation program but am thoroughly unimpressed with the guy who is supposed to be helping me. As long as they pay for vision therapy and any adaptive technology I need, I'll be happy. We'll just have to see. I can ride though. I got the Punk fitted Monday and finally got my rear off the couch for a trainer ride. I did a few too many single-leg drills and am paying for it today. Still, it felt great to get back to training again. I'm going to a friend's house on Sunday for a trainer ride and a few episodes of "Outlander". Some hot Scottish azz always brightens up the day. Again, thanks to those of you who have been checking in on me. I'm so grateful for my Manatee friends. Yer the bestest!!! Have a good weekend, everybody! Great job Mary! |

So while I don't think the difference would be too large, why not try it out... In Sean's case, it sounds like the extra fin work is stressing right where it should. Those can be used to help stress and stretch out exactly where it's being described. From there it's figuring out how much you can handle and getting used to this. A little soreness is one thing, but if it's becoming debilitating then definitely back down somehow. I stopped using a number of recovery aids altogether because of the mixed issues i was having and also some more research and theory was coming out calling into question the effectiveness of using them. These things can help you feel better, but may also take away the stress indicators. Without this, the body doesn't build up as much as it "sees" less stress. Or thinks that it did enough to take care of what was there. Times to use such measures would be more when the need to recover begins to outweigh what benefits come from letting the body take care of things on its own. Like when tapering down. Races tend to be very substantial efforts. Actual injuries. We all have day jobs, so maybe if we missed on just how much stress something may put into us. Then try to adjust next time. |
