It seems like we were hijacking a thread so I thought I would start a Spouse/Significant Other Support thread.  Good or Bad it's fun to hear.  My wife is awesome.  She got me into this sport by introducing me to her co-worker.  She wants me to race any race I want big or small, supports my training 100%, she does get a little crazy on the $$$ though but opposite of what is the norm.  She hates used items where I want to save money.  She wants me to buy all top of the line and I have to bring her back to the 1 income reality we live in (i'm a stay-at-home-Dad).  She loves it so much that we're buying her a tri-bike this month so she can join in on the fun.  Triathlons wouldn't be half as much fun if I didn't have her support and encouragment....and her paycheck.  Here is a pic of her with our Oldest of 3.

That's what makes the sport worth all the effort .. having someone by your side that supports you in every way.  Congrats on finding that balance!

My SO's support is somewhat confused. She wants me to do the tris since it results in a healthy body, but she doesn't want me to spend the time or money on the tris.

Confused yet? Me too.

Your spousal support is similar to mine. My wife supports any and all races I want to do. If I want race wheels or carbon bike or whatever, she'll support it. But like you, I have to bring her back to reality as it's just not possible with our incomes.

Oh, and by the way, beautiful wife and family.

She sounds AwSoMe! Last year I trained for my first tri. It was a sprint and I had no training base or a clue how expensive this endeavor would be. She was so put out by the amount of time I took to train and the never ending list of toys I would request. I teach High School as an Automotive Technology Instructor and she stays home with our youngest. She came around about two weeks before my race and suddenly got excited for me. I am not sure if it was the 30+ pounds I lost during the training or that I started really tending to her needs and turned my training schedule inside-out to accomodate hers and my daughters needs. We went on a long summer camping vacation and I continued to train. She saw something about Team in Training and they had a local information meeting at REI and asked if I was go to stop being selfish and TRI for a cause. She came with me to that meeting. 2 months later, she has a new bike, running shoes, Speedo and all the other toys that go along with our addiction. She is sticking to a training plan and actually swam her first consecutive 100 meters this morning. She is EXTREMELY supportive now that she recognizes how hard this stuff is and she says that she has a new respect for my training progress and new found purpose. To say that she is supportive is an understatement. Now I am crazy that my TRI budget just got cut in half(itwasn't that great to begin with.)

You are a lucky man! My wife is super supportive of my training and races. She loves to goto the races and usually we make a weekend of them. We will go camping and sometimes we will take the kids, sometimes it is just us.

This year she is really looking forward to our trip to do the Memphis Oly if all goes well.

She is also supportive of my purchasing just about whatever gadgets and equipment that I want. Of course it doesn't hurt that she is also starting to get into this stuff.

Great family's that is what it is all about!

My wife has never shown up for any race of mine. Ever. Nota 5 K, not a 10 K. Ther was no one there to even take a picture when I took my first AG award, 3rd place in a 10 K. She is a very loving woman,, but does not understand the importance of this to me. You are a very lucky man.

Ever see "War of the Rose's"? Last year was kind of like that at my house regarding triathlon. Her attitude improved greatly when she got a trip to Hawaii out of the deal and now she is racing herself and loves it.

I'm lucky, mine has been behind me all the way.  He was the house husband when I started this madness, so the $$$ was not really an issue as long as it was discussed prior.  The bike was a gift, via my parents, and that was the biggest expense.

It makes it all more enjoyable when the home front is behind you!

My wife never interferes with my training but also doesn't give my additional encouragement. For races she enjoys going to them but is typically too overwelmed to find me in the crowd. She keeps wanting me to buy a better bike but I refuse to until the engine is worthy of the machine - I think that she is embarassed FOR me.

I'm a very lucky woman with all the support I get . So here's a Shout out to my fiance Tim.

He's become my cycling coach. I don't need to join a bunch ride when I get enough training and motivation chasing his arse on the brisbane corso! ^_^ It's a great view! I keep getting top 5 places in my age group so his method is DEFINATLEY working!

He buys me tri gear, and he's a bit of a gadget nut. AND he loves coming to races so he can check out the bike porn (even if most of it is TT bikes!) and

As well as being my cycling coach, He is also my cheersquad, bike servicer, massage therepist, nutritionist, team car, photographer, eye candy type sherpa.

Even though triathlon is something I do for me, I couldn't do it without him.

She gives me tons of love and support (financial and emotional) for all athletic/fitness endeavors, shows up to races (when she isn;t racing herself)  But she is 100% NOT down with BT addiction. I have to sneak it sometimes!  And now that my training has all but stopped, OK it has completely stopped, due to my pregnancy, she is REALLY anti BT.

Well, I just celebrated 32 years of marriage to mine, and she's supported me over those years in ways I didn't deserve.  She even lived through the 70's with me, so I doubt a few tris could rattle her

I joke that she gives me slack on some two-a-days, but in all she is extremely supportive.  Races are a non-issue, and she loves to come and root me on.  That includes 5k's, which involves her bringing our little one down.  But that makes it fun as well, to see my baby waving.  I'm  extremely lucky for what I have.

I've got support in most all ways as well.  As she controls the budget and the diet, I find I'm in good hands.  The kids are starting to get old enough I can involve them in some of my shorter runs, and she's started to pickup on some 5k's with me.  good stuff.

The Mrs. is happy for me because of the shape I am in compared to a year ago and the fact that I have gotten serious about something and have stuck with it longer than a couple of months.  She doesn't even mind me being on BT.  She comes to my races when she can, BUT she is not cool with the amount of $$$$$ that is spent on it.  I not allowed to buy anything new (except nutrition and a helmet) for the next 6-8 months.

She has ZERO ambition to take part in this sport which I am fine with as she does her own thing.

My wife fully supports me in triathlons, or whatever ideas I get for that matter. The only thing is that I am what they call a "Dreamer" and I get these crazy ideas of things that I want to do and buy and I get completely obsessed with for a little bit. Then it goes away but she still supported the idea when it was there.

As for races, She gets upset if she cannot make it to a race. She battles all th elements and stands there waiting to take my picture and give me a hug at the finish line. The only "no's" that I get from her is with money, esp since we have been saving for a house she has me on a pretty tight budget with this expensive sport.

This thread could make me cry.  I was a collegiate athlete and DH put up with it b/c it was something I had to do, b/c it paid for school, so he never gave me any flack, nevermind that running was something that I love.  I sat on my butt for several years after I graduated and now that I am in to tri's, all I hear is grief, about how I am always going here and there, getting up early, never spending time with him, etc.  The time I spend now trying to tri isn't even close to the hours and hours I worked out during school.  Its so frustrating.  Never once has he come to a race, offered to jock strap, gets mad when my trainer is louder than the TV. Sigh...

You guys that have supportive spouses are so lucky, what I wouldn't give.

Good, no, wonderful husband - got me into tri's and now he supports me whenever we're not racing together. This Christmas was easy - we got ourselves a bike trainer. We're both training for a HIM in July and Im signed up for Escape from Alcatraz in June - he didn't get picked in the lottery. I couldn't imagine doing it without his support and we both agree that we're setting a healthy example for our daughters which is just icing on the cake!

Geez shorty... That's a bummer. Maybe it's time to buy him a bike and drag him out riding with you.

My wife is not supportive at all. That is why we are divorcing. She has never seen me race. Showed no interest. Always had an excuse as to why she couldn't get up in the morning to watch me race. She was usually drunk the night before the race so you can pick from an array of excuses for her. I loved this, she described me as "having an affair with myself." Without her distractions and drama around I hope to be a better athlete in the future.

Mine is great.   He likes it when I train.  He likes it when I race and will take a vacation to watch me if he can (he is gone for work about 80% of the time).  He bought me a bike for valentine's day (nothing says I love you like full carbon fiber).  When I don't ride as much he teases me that he will have a yard sale so he can sell it for $50.  He takes photos at races.  He teases me about my BT addiction, but not bad.

I would be sad if he didn't get some kick out of it.  Now he has a bike too, so that is cool.  Oh, and he suggests I spend more money on work out clothes so I look "like a champion".....
