I won't be running 26 miles in training, I probably won't ride 112 (but may get close), do I need to swim 2.4 miles before an IM? My plan has a couple of 4500 yrd workouts that put it over distance. I've seen some posts saying 5-6K swims for IM (that would take me all day I think).

What's your longest swim while preparing for an IM?

2.4mi was my longest I think.  But last week, with no IM on the horizon, I did 5k just for fun.

I'd go ahead and swim long if you have the time available.

My longest was 1:20.  After a warm-up, I swam my "race time" (estimated).  I lost count of the exact yardage, but know I did more than 2.4 that day.

Otherwise, I had a few 1:15 swims, but for the most part kept my swim workouts to an hour.

I swam it just to get a fill for the distance.  I swam one in Feb. and then the other a few weeks out to just see if my time had gooten better on my trianing plan.  This helped me with the feel of 2.4.  I also did a century ride (actually 2) and a mamthon 9 months out.  This just let me know that i could make the distances.  I think it was more physchological than anything else.

I swim 3 x week and each session ranges from 45-60 minutes. My Ironman swim time was 1:30. I am not super fast but the distance was no problem at all.

I don't think it is necessary to do it. I did, but don't think it made too much of a difference for my overall Ironman performance. If you want to then do, if not you will be fine too.

For some reason I have no desire to run a marathon before my IM. I mean really, I gotta get back to the car right???

But the swim, ah the swim. I want to swim 2.4 before because it's the first thing out the gate and I don't want to fail on that. So I will be damned sure to knhow that I can get through that 2.4 in a good enough time. That said I do 2000-2,500 as my short work out and 3,000 to 3,500 as my long work outs. But I have swam 4,500 before and I think it took me about 1:40 or something. Not blazing fast but I biked afterwards so I wasn't too tired.

Something about being out in open water and not knowing whether I'm going to make that distance gives me chills. So yes I will swim 2.4 miles before the race.

x2. it won't hurt and in fact it will be great mental training, shoot for a 5K session at least

I swim 3500 to 4000 yards twice a week.  I don't see any value in going more.

I swam the distance in a wetsuit in the pool stopping very briefly every 500 for a drink.

And then I did an irondistance aqua velo about 6 weeks out in super crappy choppy conditions.  Once I survived that I knew I could handle whatever IMFL threw at me.

I enjoy the swim time as well (probably too much since I swam on a team).  However, I don't see the point in swimming too much.  You might save 5-10 minutes on the swim if you added another workout per week.  Over 10-14 hours, that's not much.  However, add another bike or run workout and you could increase your savings with a bigger return.  I just wish the swim was more like 4 miles, instead of 2.4.  That way, it would be more of an equalizer for the swimmers and require more race strategy for the bikers and runners.

You Travis County people are nuts!

Plus, what would trisports do, start selling 142.2 stickers?

I built to a weekly 1hr continuous swim in the final build stages leading up to my IM (not the only swimming I did each week).  These were adequate for me.  The consistency was key as I was able to monitor my progress and get comfortable with a "race" effort.

These were all in the pool without wetsuit.  I trusted that I had enough OWS experience via previous tri races to be comfortable with my ability to perform in race conditions: comfortable in my wetsuit, in a crowd, and managing a course

I know you are in a play for Kona but what is the rationale for 2600m per workout AND that being your longest?

Very interested.

I'm close to 4000 yards in almost every Masters workout now.  I don't think the additional 225 yards will be a problem.

I swam 2.4 once about 3 weeks before the race, other than that I swam OWS of about 1-1.2 mile every week and 2 pools swims of about 2000-3000 yards. I felt great at IMFL, I could have done another lap if I needed too, I think getting anywhere from 16k-25k a month, you would be fine, that's what I did and I just started swimming a year ago.

I'm still in-process for my 1st IM, but my coach told me that in a race you can swim double the distance of your longest practice swim.  (adding in wetsuit, drafting, adrenaline, etc.)  Now, the last few hundred yards may not be pretty, but I think it would be possible to complete it if for some reason you did not get in the yardage you intended.  However, for the mental benefit and hoping not to be exhausted at the end of the swim, I plan to do some 2.4's before race day.

3000 is my longest so far, I still have 8 months of good training, I hope to get 4500 a few times, and thinking about a 2.4 mile swim "race" in April to see if I can make it .

I have been doing a 2.4 Mile swim TT at least every two weeks or so, I even did one with Wetsuit a couple of days ago...   I want to make sure not only that I can do the distance, but to improve my efficiency..

IMCDA  is going to be fun..

Did a 5k USAS/USMS Rough Water Swim Race last year as a tuneup for IMLP.

The interesting bit was that the race was not wetsuit legal (Has nothing to do with water temps) so was an interesting test.

Unfortunately it does not work for me this year because the 5k Race is after IMCdA this year. (I would love to do it again)

Will probably end up doing a few ~2.5 mile Ocean Swims prior to my IM this year.
