I almost hit a _____ while on my bike!!

Champion  5575    Butler |  Subject: I almost hit a _____ while on my bike!!Well a few weeks ago I layed on my brakes to avoid a squirrel and thought that was bad until sunday. I meet a few BTer's for a nice cold 60deg swim (I at least tried to swim but couldn't breath), they both HTFU big time and then we went for a ride in the country. At around mile 32 of 46 I have my head down slightly and see a big brown thing run in front of me. Look up and there is a deer about 10 feet in front of me. I manage to miss it but almost pee'd myself. I heard of a lady in Colorado hitting a bear in a race and continuing to race. Anyone else it anything or came close to hitting a wild animal. |

Looked up and this little pup darted across the road not 3 feet from my front wheel. I looked right where he/she entered the woods and Mom was standing up on a rock just into the trees. Scared the crap out of me (especially as a father of 3 little ones). One of the main reasons I avoid paved bike trails like the plague if I can. |

Missed a snake the other day on a run (still waiting to get my bike fixed)...I look down at what I think is going to be a twig when the twig moved....Don't think it was a rattler. I also had a deer jump right in front of me on the same trail...scared the right out of me...and once, on my bike many years ago...I ran over a snake. I saw it at the last minute and tried to jump my bike...the front tire hit it...but the back tire hopped over it. It sort of jumped when I hit it and I felt sooooo guilty...I hate hurting anything. |

Also have come close to hitting moose a couple of times, they seem to graze right next to the trail and when coming around the corner they sure surprise you! Have been lucky so far, knock on wood! |

I had my head down trying to power my way up a long and tough hill. I saw the brown thing laying across the curb and figred it had to be a stick - it was the middle of the day and hot, so I was expecting any animals to be in the shade. As I got right on top of it, wouldn't you know my left pedal was coming down right on top of his head. No mistaking it - it was a 5 foot rattler. I thought might be dead, but when I circled around, it had coiled up into a defensive position. Apparently I spooked him as much as he spooked me! |

Extreme Veteran 665 Vancouver, British Columbia | Subject: RE: I almost hit a _____ while on my bike!! 4 year old girl who almost ran out from in front of a parked SUV to join her mom who was crossing the street. Luckily her mom yelled stop because I couldn't see the kid at all because of the parked car until it was almost to late. I don't know which of the three of us was more scared- the mom screaming stop, the kid who jumped out from in front of the car and luckily listened to her mom and stopped dead in her tracks, or me who was focused on not hitting her mom and wondering why she was yelling "stop, stop" only to see a little smiling kid just off to the right of my front wheel. |
