I agree with some others on Carbon Leaf, although the past couple times I've seen them live I was disappointed.  I have their live album and love it, but they've become a bit too 'poppy' for my tastes.

A couple of my current under the radar favorites are:

Derek Trucks Band
Ryan Adams  & The  Cardinals
Assembly of Dust
John Butler Trio
Band of Heathens

I love the Kings of Leon - "Molly's Chamber" quite a catchy tune.

If you haven't heard of the Kings of Leon, you haven't been reading COJ:

Too Much Joy - great 90s punk/pop/alt band.  Live shows were over the top crazy.

To this thread I'll add Built to Spill. While being marginally more well known than some of the bands mentioned in here, none were better at their peak that BTS. Their pinnacle musically was 1997's Keep it Like a Secret - maybe my favorite album ever. Certainly an album that reminds me of all the great times I had in the Summer of 1999!

Mine too! Their other albums have some real gems as well, but that's definitely my favorite.

I'd like to add Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes (they had some of the same members and thus a similar sound). They encapsulate what rock music should sound like as far as I'm concerned.

These were great prog rock bands from the 70's. I think Wishbone Ash is the only one still performing.

Hi-jack "One of their first gigs was at a party my band was headlining - we all thought it would be interesting to see what Todd had come up with - needless to say, after they ripped through their set I was flabbergasted. He was no longer the singer of a covers band, that's for sure. We were more of a Bauhaus/Tones on Tail meets Cocteau Twins/Sisters of Mercy all original songs type band. After the Toadies blasting vocals and guitar - we weren't sure the party wanted to come over to our style. It all worked out and they did - but dang what an immediate statement the Toadies made that night."

Hi-jack off.

My contribution to this list for the non-Texas locals - Bruce Robison.

Phantom Stranger.

Ha ha, just kidding.  That was my band back in the day.  Laughing  Funny thing though, I just heard from the drummer a few days ago about doing a "reunion" show out at Rockford Speedway October 25th.  The band pretty much fell apart three or four years ago while recording our second album (first album is available as a download from iTunes and a bunch of other sites).  It's funny because just last month I let the domain name (and hence the website) die because I figured at this point we'd never play again.

About the name, we had been using it for years before we discovered it was a minor comic book character back in the '50's and years before Rob Zombie did his song "Return of the Phantom Stranger".

Carbon Leaf has been a touch poppy but I saw their New Years Eve show in Richmond this past year and it was great. Played all of their old stuff and best stuff.

x2 on Ryan Adams and the Cardinals. He's from my home town.

Brilliant

X2

Great Big Sea, although many Canadian BTers are probably pretty familiar with them (and possum).

I'm sure you've seen Carbon Leaf a few times seeing as they are in your backyard in Richmond. Love Great Big Sea too. If you like Carbon Leaf you shoud try Blue Merle. They broke up after one album but the whole record is great. Bluegrass/Alternative type of sound. http://www.bluemerle.com/main.html

Love Blue Merle.

LOVE the Mars Volta!! Love them!! I didn't mention them because I thought they were pretty "known". Saw them here in STL a couple of months ago - three hours of complete mayem - came away with two deaf ears and a bloody finger (Cedric threw a giant trash can into the crowd). One of the best bands I've ever seen (and I've seen my share).

Mothers Finest...Great band from Atlanta that should have really made the big time. Unfortunately, they were steered into another direction. Alas, this is essentially, Sly & The Family Stone meets Led Zeppelin. They practiced down the street from a friend of mines house...attached are a couple of their tunes.
