So I was talking to a friend about my goal for my first ever 70.3 to be Boise, after reading good race reports, and I'm usually really dedicated early season.

SO I check out the link only to find out they're doing a start time of 2:00 p.m.!!!! WTF??? Am I the only one who thinks this is very odd?  Unique, schmunique, we spend -- at least I sense most of us -- our training lives for early morning peaks.  Cripe the sun 'll be down by the time this turtle finishes.

I can't believe how torqued off I am.  So much for that plan.  Any good early season 70.3 suggestions for a first timer would be appreciated.

Anyway, pardon the rant.

Back to your regularly scheduled thread.

So finish in the dark!  Think of all the IM racers out there!

On a positive note: the run will be cooler and after you finish you won't have to sit in the HEAT and try to cool off/relax.

I say go for it anyway.

OK, well, there's that.  I suppose I am subject to persuasion.  I just know when I meet my BT pals in the p.m. to train I usually fade b/c I'm a poor performer in the p.m. -- not like I plan on anything but finishing a 1st ever HIM, but you know what I mean, I'd like to at least attempt to perform respectably

There's really not that much heat by then though. This year's Boise HIM was about 70 and a light rain came in about 4 or 5 hours after the start. The average here at that time in june is only about 80. While that's a bit toasty for some the run is right next to the Boise river which cools you down quite a bit at parts and half the run will be shaded by the thousands of trees all along the course. I plan on doing it anyway though.

I might do this race just because of the start time!

Do you fade even if you've spent the early part of the day resting?  If I go work out after I've worked all day, I fade too.

Be smart on race day, and it'll be a fine race.

well, after reading the morning vs evening workouts, I'm starting to think well, if I dont' get up at my usual 4:30/5, etc., and plan to train in the p.m. so I'm used to it, it might not be so bad. That and slamming a Red BUll or two before the swim

I really had had my heart set on it.  sorta like once I make a commitment to do something and start telling folks, no backing out, no matter what --well, unless I'm dead

Boise was a great race this year. don't be dissuaded by the start time, if you plan it out you may even be able to get a better nights sleep beforehand!!! I know I always have crappy sleeps with the early morning starts so I am really looking forward to doing this race again with the later start time. Should be a good one. And for all of you in Boise, hell of a show you put on this year, can't wait to be back again!!!

This would be a great race for me because I'm soo not a morning person.  I think I my tried to arrange my rotations to be in Boise during that time and see what's what.

I'm in! I can't wait for a race weekend where I don't lay in bed trying to go to sleep before midnight. I'm a total owl.

Energy drinks before swimming are definitely bad news.  I had a training partner who did that once.  She almost fell apart.  I think she was able to swim 200 yards before she thought her heart was going to blow up.

Go ahead and do the race.  It'll be fun.

Hmmm, this looks attractive to me because of the start time. Getting in the water is a problem for me, but it sounds much nicer when it's a bit warmer and the sun is out.

Me too!  I'd rather do a race with a late start like that.  Not everyone is an early bird.

I love races that start in the afternoon.
Temp. is usaully more pleasant.
Body is more ready to race.
Can eat breakfast at a normal time.
Use the toilet at normal daily time and not have to use the portable toilet.

Go Boise!

Throughout my life I have always preferred afternoon training, and trained in the AM only when doing doubles. But as for morning swim starts, that is the way to go. When I was on the boat for Alcatraz I actually wished the swim started at 7AM instead of 8AM because of the quickly changing surface conditions. I never thought I'd wish for an earlier swim but I did in that race.

I wonder what the wind conditions are like in Boise at 2PM? I am considering this race as well.

I'm actually excited about the start time - it'll be something different and fun! Lots of downtown excitement and lights! And it'll be good practice for an IM finish.

Hmm, getting up at 4:30AM, settup up in the dark vs. sleeping in and being able to see what you are doing, 2:00 sounds great.

Actually, I like the idea. You start at almost the warmest part of the day, and then the temp will peak early on in the bike leg, and then it'll taper on the run.

I'm sick of 7am start times where I don't get really warm until half-way through the run...
