Subject: GUYS ONLY...does your "junk" fall asleep when biking?

Man, I hate to be indecent here, I'm not trying to get banned or anything.  I didn't know any other way to word it more properly.

This is a huge problem for me on the bike...the whole area...twig, berries, all of it goes completely numb when I ride.  If I stand up for just a couple seconds the blood rushes back and it's fine, but then it goes numb again soon enough.  It's worse if I'm on the aero's, but still happens even if I'm up on the hoods.  You might think, hey, numb is good, at least it's not pain.  But there's something very unnerving about that area having no feeling whatsoever while I'm riding.

I'm wearing a pretty decent pair of padded cycling shorts...happens with them or my race shorts, doesn't matter.

Could my saddle angle possibly be wrong?  Is this common and we just have to live with it?

Again, sorry for the crudeness here...hopefully no girls stumble into this thread and get offended.

Numb is not good.  I go 6+ hours without numbness

Have you had a bike fit?

Make sure you're on the saddle correctly. My stuff used to go numb, then I realized if I sit on my "sit bones" and not on my junk it doesn't get numb so much. All I had to do was slide back in the saddle an inch or two.

sometimes, but not often.  Usually when I'm on the trainer.

Suggestions -

  • Take a look at fit as suggested above
  • Review saddle angle.  Should be level
  • Review how you are sitting on saddle.  Should be on "sit bones" as stated above
  • Move a little on in the saddle during the ride.  Standing up for hills, taking pressure off your saddle, etc at times to make sure the blood is circulating

For me that's a reminder that I'm not sitting in the saddle right.  As another poster stated you need to sit back on the "sit bones".  If you are unaccustomed to it they WILL hurt.  It just takes time in the saddle to get them used to the pressure.

Numb is bad... numb means lack of blood flow...

You might also consider how you’re..um..positioned inside your shorts. You want your gear stowed in an upright and locked position.

ISM Adamo Road Saddle - I love it. The road has move padding than the race, that's the only difference. And it's cheaper for some reason. I only use tri shorts which have less padding than bike shorts and haven't had a problem in up to 3 hours of riding so far. I'm about to get into 16 weeks of training for IMFL so that's going to go up and I don't expect a problem.

Is this common and we just have to live with it?

It is common, but no we don't want to "just live with it".

I would go to your local bike shop and get fitted (let them know your problem).

If you can't do that, try changing your saddle angle and try sitting farther back on the saddle like others have suggested.

You could also try the ISM Adamo saddle. It is specifically designed to take pressure off of "that area" and put all the weight on your sit bones. I didn't have any luck trying it due to severe discomfort, but many others have had great success and swear by it.

Some also align their saddle a few degrees one way or another from the centerline of the frame, depending on which side they "dress" on.

Personally, I switched to a Profile Design tri saddle with a padded nose, and I'll make a point to move around on the saddle during a long ride.  I usually start out forward and move towards the back during a ride.

How am I supposed to lean forward and stay on my rear end bones?  I don't see how you can stay even in a relaxed road position without putting some pressure on that area.  I am no doctor, but I think it is the pressure on your underneath part, not the pressure on the "meat and potatoes" that is causing the problem.

Hey numbnuts - maybe your bike shorts are too tight?

no - this isn't a good thing.  i would second the suggestion to have a proper bike fitting.

I purchased a new seat and had the seat position raised up higher in a recent bike fitting - that ended up putting me further back in the saddle and more relaxed in the aero position.  A proper fitting makes all the difference.

That's exactly right.  It's like the vein carrying all the blood to that area is right under there, right what I'm seated on (coin purse i believe the kids call it these days...).  I have no idea how to balance on the "seat bones" when leaning so far forward.  I've tried moving all over the place on the saddle, forward, backward, you name it.  I was fitted for the bike over a year ago and haven't touched anything...maybe I need to revisit the fit.

There are some good suggestions here though, so I'll keep working on it.

Don't know about junk, twigs or berries but I do know that my dick gets numb sometimes.  I simply stand up, reposition everything, then keep on cycling.

I've struggled with the same problem, and found the ISM adamo and the Selle SMP both solved that issue. Trust me, I spent a lot of money on fits and different saddles. I've finally settled on the Adamo Typhoon and 90% of my numbness is gone, and if I stand for a few seconds every 15min or so, that handles the other 10%.

I did a 6hr ride on Sunday, with no numbness. Can't say my taint isn't sore, but I didn't get numb.

Mine sometimes gets numb after 6+ hours...when that happens, I apologize to my wife, get out of bed, get dressed and go for a long bike ride!

Numb is bad.  Numb is a precursor to impotent, which is very bad (or at least, I'd miss it if it were me!).  Try adjusting the seat so it points down a little more, and isn't pressing into the nerves and blood vessels. Also try moving the seat forward or back depending on where it is riding relative to the bones that should be bearing the weight.

I usually stand up, shove my hand down the front of my shorts and reposition it. Then I grin and wave to the onlookers in their vehicles.

I had this very same problem and I simply got a wonderful seat with a anatomical cut out. I then moved it around and now my junk doesn't go numb at all.
