Chisago Lakes HIM - Triathlon1/2 Ironman

Chisago Lakes, Minnesota
United States
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 5h 42m 43s
Overall Rank = 203/299
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 31/40
Pre-race routine:

My whole pre-race was pretty scattered. I had no business doing as well as I did in this race. Forgot ALL my bottles at home. We decided to camp for the 3 days of the weekend. Left my Infinit at home as well as my aerodrink. Pretty hard week of training going into this race. That was the plan anyway so I'm ok with the no taper.
Event warmup:

Swam about 100 yards and called it good enough. Talked to Johnnybee, Ben, Joe, Mike (Oipolloi) and his lovely wife. Missed seeing Becki. I'm sure there were others but it was really a fun time seeing everyone. Helped keep the nerves down. Heard the rumors of no toilet paper in the Biffs so I decided that wasn't going to happen.
Swim
  • 35m 21s
  • 1931 meters
  • 01m 50s / 100 meters
Comments:

I really wish they would give age group ranks in the individual categories. When I got in from the swim I don't think any of the bikes were gone from my coral yet. Really felt good.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Very happy with swim. I was hoping for 36 minutes or less and I got it.
Transition 1
  • 02m 21s
Comments:

This is what heppens when you get a GREAT transition spot. This was a fast transition for me. Not rushed. Maybe it was fast because I was all alone at the time and knew people were about to come crashing in on me.
Bike
  • 2h 43m 20s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.57 mile/hr
Comments:

I wanted to keep my heart rate in Z1 to Z2 for this ride. I didn't. I'll need to work on this more. I really felt like I was riding easy the whole time. Problem was hr was in the mid 160's the whole time. Just couldn't keep it down without feeling like I was slacking. Nutrition could have been a major disaster here. I really wanted this race to be a dress rehearsal for MOO. When I realized I had forgot my aero bottle, other bottles, and most importantly my Infinit. I almost made the 3.5 hour round trip to get it. Local bike store didn't have an aero bottle to sell so I decided to go with bottles on my downtubes and Gatorade. After 1st few gulps of gatorade I knew I was done with it. Major gut pains within minutes. Now I remember why I quit using it. Some reason my body doesn't handle it well. Had to survive on water and 1.5 Cliff bars to get me through the next 50 miles. Normally I consume 400 cals an hour. I was going on 120. Could be a problem on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Remember everything. Try and slow the pace for longer distances. Just felt good though. Definetly taper if this was an A race.
Transition 2
  • 00m 36s
Comments:

Are you kidding me? 36.8 second T2. I was literally 4 feet from run exit. Must admit that helped.
Run
  • 2h 21m 2s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

I knew I didn't leave enough in the tank for this run. I was just making little promises all the way to myself. Run the first mile, run the 1st 5k, make it to the next water stop, etc. I made the first 6 miles in 60 minutes. After that I was hurting. Could tell my stomache was empty and my legs were freaking out on me from lack of sodium and nutrition in general. Popped the 2 salt pills I had and just promised myself I would walk the uphills. Tore through the blister from last weeks race when feet got soaked. At mile 11 I did some calculations in my head and realized I could walk it in and still make my best case scenerio time. That sealed it. Didn't want to cripple myself up for the next week just to save 10 minutes. Mental weakness? Maybe. But I am happy to be walking comfortably today and knowing I could work-out today if I wanted.
What would you do differently?:

Nutrition!!!!!
Post race
Warm down:

Came into the park and had so many friends and family cheering me on. I just wanted to keep walking the last 400 yards or so but the option was taken away by my ever supporting wife. She highly encouraged me to finish strong and that was what I did. Hung out with family and friends. Tried to eat but just couldn't do it. Finally got some ice cream to go down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nutrition.

Event comments:

For as many people as do the race I think they do a good job. I think they had over 1,600 people including the sprint and half. Was a little dissapointd they didn't have me in the Clydesdale category I had registered under. Would have taken home the 3rd place trophy. Was sad to see a lot of drafting going on in the bike. At one point I had a group basically go by me in a pelaton. Unfortunately I knew several in the group (No BT'ers) and know they were not as fast as they were in the group. Blatent cheating in my opinion. Could see them for quite a ways and they hung together and were 2 and 3 people wide the whole time I saw them. This bothered me more than it should have I guess.

Someone drafted off me I'm pretty sure the whole 1.2 miles. About every 2-3 minutes I would feel them stroke over my legs. Was never really passed though. Good swim.

Great race, Bry! You made the right decision to not gut out the speedy run on an empty stomach. You got a bigger fish to fry! Still, wasn't this something like a 1 hour HIM PR?

What can I say man....YOU ARE A MACHINE!

Despite not having your normal nutrition, water bottles, etc...you persevered and kicked butt!  This is what makes an Ironman.  You will soon earn that title and be very worthy of it.

On another note....I saw the drafting too.  I even had one yahoo ride on my wheel for a couple of miles.  I'd lose him then a few minutes later there he was again.  I kept looking back at him to give him the stink-eye.  He eventually rode up next to me and began chatting.  I ignored him and added a tooth to my gears.  That was the last I saw of him.

Anyway.....GREAT JOB BRYAN!  Amazing finish.  Amazing PR!

See you at Ironman Wisconsin!

Bryan...You were incredible!! You should have looked me up in the phone book. I would have been glad to pick up the goods you had forgotton. Your swim time was FAST!!! The lake was great. I must admit, I was thinking it would be weedy. You do make the swim look quite easy, I must say. You also cruised on the bike. Too bad about the drafting. That's a no no!! I would never be able to catch up to you or I may have tried the drafting thing I actually looked for you as people passed me before the sprint/HIM split. I wished I could have connected with you before the race started. My nephew was doing his first tri ever so I did some mini instruction for him. T2 was super speed. Maybe I need to watch how you transition so quickly. And after all that, a half marathon!!! Well done! You deserve one of those trophies that were given out. Great race. Proud of you.

Great job, and very mature choice on not destroying yourself on the run. If I ever embark on an IM journey, I hope to be able to emulate your level of responsibility.

If I've learned anything from paying attention to your IM training this summer it is:

Training for an IM = get a PR in EVERY race you enter

you're a machine...keep it up!

You are ready for MOO for sure!

Great race Bryan!  That's great about the transition spot.  You had a killer bike leg...it's tough slowing down on the bike, isn't it?   Sorry to hear about the lack of nutrition.  Way to push through that run.

You're right about the finish.  When there's family and friends at the finish it's IMPOSSIBLE NOT to come in strong.  That happened to me at Liberty.  With all you guys there at the finish, it was IMPOSSIBLE to walk it in, even with the quad and calf cramps.

Way to knock off close to an hour off last year's tri!
