That is exactly what I did starting last summer and finishing my first HIM yesterday.

If you train consistently and correctly it should be very doable.

It is definitely doable!  I did my first tri (sprint) in June '08 and did my HIM last weekend (it was my third tri).  I went into the HIM as a learning experience and I enjoyed every minute of it.

If it's crazy, then I'm right there with you.  I'll be doing my first HIM on 11/9, almost exactly 1 year after I started training for my first sprint.

I hope your not crazy, I'm doing Longhorn 1/2 in Oct 7 months after my first sprint. The summer I did 4 sprints, 1 duthalon, 2 Oly's, 2 1/2 marathons and will finish the year with the HIM. Did I mention I'm a little OCD. IMKY next year (2nd year of doing tri), why not?

I did my first sprint this June and another in July.  Just finished my first HIM two weeks ago.  You can do it, no problem.

Hopefully you are comfortable doing one of the three disciplines already?  Meaning you are already a runner, swimmer or biker?  That usually helps

totally doable. we can put our bodies through almost anything if we are in the right mental place.

my first marathon....I was still a smoker. yes, I was an idiot. ok, I was much younger then too. we partied quite a bit the night before, got a few hours sleep...barely made it to the start line on time (I was sprinting across the parking lot as the starting gun went off..no timing chips in those days)....my training partner ditched me coz I smelled like beer. But I finished it, and I beat my partner too!! And it took me a month to feel better. I have a much more mature approach to training these days.

totally doable. go for it!

I did two smaller sprints and then jumped in a HIM two months later.  I had done a lot of running in the past.  As long as you can cover the distance, after that it is all about pace and nutrition.  For 99% of us, we'lll never be perfectly prepared for the first one.  There will be one sport that is lagging relative to the others etc...just go out and have fun with it.  I had a blast and was grinning ear-to-ear and laughing at myself as my legs felt like a ton of bricks on the run and I had not done any brick workouts beforehand.  It was just funny to experience it and say, next time I will do this or that a bit differently!

Go for it, I was glad I listened to the encouragement of others and did my first one this year.

As are others, I am right there with you.  I have plans to do four tris in 09.  Oly in March, Xterra in May, Sprint in August and HIM Augusta in late Sept.  Previously I have done 1 full xterra and a sprint.  I haven't signed up for Augusta yet, but will be shortly and training hard.  My only concern is that my only time ever on a road bike was during my sprint.  (I borrowed the bike from a friend, switched out the pedals the night before and jumped on it around my neighborhood for five minutes).  I am (was ???) more of an off road guy.  The swim should be easy, but unsure about the bike and not yet a big fan of running, but it's growing on me.

I started in a December, and did my first HIM the following Nov.  11 months.  Very doable.  I probably could have done it sooner if that was my goal.  But I wanted to focus on Oly's first.
