So what training plan or coach will you guys be following for your build to IM Canada? When are you starting?

I had considered following a plan but I felt a bit lost without a coach so I opted to find a new one for a different view of things.

I'm working with a new coach so I have a general idea what he'll be having me do but not exact weekly outline.

He is big on more frequency so I may be building up to running 4-6 times a week some days twice a day; low cadence work on the bike; and swimming I'm working with a swim coach to improve my rather poor technique. Right now I'm doing each sport 3-4 times a week with most everything easy intensity but a few harder intervals on the bike.

I'm signed up to do St. Anthony's Oly distance in Tampa the end of April, will probably do a couple sprints in May or June; may do a HIM as a biker in early June and will do a HIM either end of June or early July depending.

I just found out tri bike transport is making a stop in MA for IM Canada which I'm super pleased about but a bit surprised as only 14 folks from MA are registered, but NE is small so folks from surrounding states might drop off their bikes in MA. It will make getting to the race much easier as I think 6 of us will be coming and that will be a lot of luggage and no bike will make it easier.

Well, I'm currently looking at getting a coach. I'm going to be meeting with him again just after Christmas so we'll see how it goes.

As for training, right now I'm doing 2-3 times in each sport per week plus trying to get in 1-2 sessions each of weights and yoga.

All that I'm signed up for currently are a HIM on June 7th. I will probably do some early season runs in Feb and then maybe a few tris/dus early as well....we'll see how it goes.

Coach?? ... Plan??? ... Doh! I knew I was forgetting something!

Seriously, I'm just piecing bits of training together and hoping for the best. I've been following Jorge's cycling program. Once it warms up next spring I'll go longer and just try to 'ride lots'.

I've been getting in the pool 2 or 3 times a week with the local masters club. They take a break for the summer though, so then I'll go longer sometimes and just try to 'swim lots'.

A local running store has traditionally formed a marathon club in mid January, building towards a half or full marathon around the end of May. I've run with them the last two years and will probably do that again. However, their local target event has been canceled for '09. There are some alternatives within driving distance but I may just skip doing the half mary and, like last year, try to maintain an occasional long run for a few months until August. ... and 'run lots'.

There will be a little more structure in there, and an oly and a half IM along the way, but I'm pretty much making it up as I go. Like you Kathy, I have a general idea but no exact weekly outline.

I'm in for 2009 and really looking forward to it. This will be #4 for me. I'm excited to do the race in Canada since I'm living in Canada this year. I will have to really work on some hills, as Winnipeg is pancake flat

I'm contemplating training plans for the year and haven't decided yet. I figure I'll decide by the beginning of the year. No coach though, I'll use a BT plan or Training Peaks, but I just haven't decided.

I'm looking to a number of other races and may even try and do a 50-100 mile run in April. Also, I may try and hit an Xterra race that I saw in South Dakota. Some other races thrown in there, it should be a good summer.

Ahhh summer - thinking about that seems so far away with the current -30F weather recently here.

I'm in for #3. Its always a blast. The last two years it has been cool; if we get a normal hot windy day, look out.

I don't want to hear that...cool is good in my book.

My first Ironman, and my plan is do a HIM with full training, that I have already started, and then jump into the IM training after that.  It is all new to me, so I have no idea if this is a good idea or not, but I guess we'll live and learn.

I live in Southern California, so you would think I would have great training weather all year round, but we are getting cold weather lately - not Canada cold - but enough to make me get on the trainer instead of the bike at 5am.

My company is brining a team, all others are IM vets, but this is my first.  It will be good to talk to you all during the year to see what kind of training variety is out there, as all I really know is how to select one of the training plans available online and do it.

I have watched it and dreamed it, and finally made the commitment for my first IM in Penticton 09. Definitely a bit nervous about it all- especially the swim. I joined a local tri club with some awesome coaches so they are giving me a good start. While I have logged some good running miles with a mary in Sacramento in Dec, it is time to pull out the trainer and get the legs spinning.

Looking forward to cheering on the other newbies and gaining some knowledge from the experienced ones out there.

Happy holidays gang!

I want to do IMC in 2010. Worried about getting into the event though. I know there are some qualifying races and in person registration on the yr before's race.
Also know there are some tri camps that offer people the option to register if they go to the camp.
Are there any other ways to get in? I'm thinking qualifying will be my best chance if there is a qualifying race in the So Cal area. Is there a lottery?
Is there online registration open for a small period of time?

This year IMC went online for spots for the first time in a few years.

You can get spots at IM Cali 70.3 (which is itself sold out now), but they offer the spots based on time, and IMC goes fast.

$1300 for community fund (may be more for '10, went up $300 for '09)

Thanks for the response! I'm registered for Cali 70.3. Thinking will do it around 4:40. Do you know qualifying times in the past from Cali? But then again don't want to do it until 2010.
Do times for IMC from IMCa70.3 also go based on AG? I'm in M20-24....

Good point, April 09 will have slots for IMC 09.  I don't know the times, sorry.  It's not really qualifying times, it's "we have 20 slots," and then they go down the list, starting with the fastest.

BUT if you truly think you can go 4:40, you might just end up in Kona instead

This will be my 5th IM and second time at IMC.  I hired my friend and pro athlete Miranda Alldritt  who lives here but trains in California in the winter and Colorado in the summer.  She hopes to win this race more than any other race including Kona.  She will probably go sub 10 and I've asked her to train me to go sub 12:30 so now that I've recovered from my back injury she has me training hard.  I highly recommend her beyond supplying a training plan to giving personal support and of course she'll be there waiting at the finish line.

This will be my second IMC.

Coaching isn't in the finances this year. There are a couple of BT training plans that are quite solid...combined with some Friel and Gordo Byrne stuff I've picked up along the way, and some local coaching I learned from next year. I hope this will be a great...albeit hard...training year!

I'm also looking forward to picking up some tips from my friends here and on BT.

It's all good.

Can the past IMC participants please describe the nutrition options that will be available on the course. I would like to start training with the same type of options that I will be begging for while on the course.

Official training plan starts in about 3 weeks!

Coaching:  I used the Start to Finish Ironman Training by Paul Huddle.  24 week program that I followed pretty loosely.  I mainly used the times as guides for long bike rides and long runs on the weekend.  I kick off official training for IMC 2009 on March 16th.  I have some a lot of work to do before then...

Food on the course: power bars, power gels, gatorade, water, bananas, grapes, pretzels...  I hope I can remember what I did last year, for next year, as it worked for me then.

Hey everyone, hope everyone's training is going well (if you have stopped or started yet that is) The obsesive / compulsive in me is getting the itch to begin prepping for Ironman 09. This would include lodging.  We are staying in the Carmi Motor Inn (carmi.ipenticton.com) The room is pretty big and can sleep 4. If you and a partner are looking for a bed, PM me and let me know. It is $129 plus taxes per night. It ain't the Rizt but it is a 20 minute walk to the race start / expo, on Main St. so it is on the Bike / Run courses. The only real catch is Shelby will be with us, so if you are not a dog person, you need not reply! Good luck in training everyone!
