Pre-race routine:

Shuffled around in sweats looking like one of Venice's finest homeless people. Got body-marked. Put a swim cap on and earplugs in.
Event warmup:

Got in the water up to my knees.

Comments:

This was crazy fun on New Year's Day ... a bunch of L.A. idiots in Speedos decide to go race in the ocean. There's a mini-course called Amateurs where people just hop in and out (or go round a buoy that's at the surfline), and then the Pros (awesome! I got to go in the Pros wave!) actually do a 300m race.

Look! There's purple in my graph. Heh. I haven't swum in six months. The water was BITCHING cold ... it was tough to breathe and move first getting in. I did head-up free at first and focused on breathing meditation, then was able to put my head in the water after about 50 yards.

The rest went really smoothly, although occasionally I popped my head up and did a breaststroke to sight and get around others.

I came in about mid-pack, which was great for being with a bunch of ocean swimmers, and my time was decent for a swim where you ran in and had to get past the surfline.
What would you do differently?:

Get fully wet or at least get my face wet and practice breathing in the cold water before the race. Oh, and maybe swim sometimes?
Post race
Warm down:

Did a full-body change right there on Venice Beach. :) I had a towel around me for most of it, though.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Ummm ... not swimming for six months? Bloody cold?

Great race. I would like to hear more how you use breathing to calm down during a race.

Awesome job. I 2nd the idea of giving more info on getting your breathing under control out there in the water. I've struggled with that twice last year.

Great job getting in the water and swimming like a fish!!!  I haven't been in the pool in over three months and will most likely sink!

Take care and keep moving!!!

Congrats on being insane getting out there and kicking butt with so little swim fitness!  Would have crushed any sort of time I could have put up!

You are a naturally gifted swimmer!! I'd still be standing on the beach asking someone, "they want me to do what??" LOL!! Did I read your report correctly in that you swam in that cold of water in only your swimsuit? OMG!! You are one tough lady! I too would like to hear about your breathing and calming yourself down in that situation. Thanks Yanti for a great report!

Nice job!   You're nuts for getting out there.  But I guess it goes with this TRI stuff! Great way to get out there and start the year off right.

You've done much more swimming that I have done this year! :-)

Okay...you haven't swam in six months AND were in frigid water AND swam with your head up and still went 1:35 per 100! You are crazy fast, girl! Good job! Sounds like a fun way to kick off 2009!
