Sunny
Total Time = 1h 28m 57s
Overall Rank = 8/44
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 1/10
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5AM, ate a banana and 2 cups of coffee. Mmmmm
I saw 7 deer in the parking lot of the hotel. I love Prescott. Actually, let me take this opportunity to say that Prescott is freaking beautiful. I love the hills out there.
Event warmup:

Splashed around in the kiddy pool. I think I was a bit over-caffeinated, if that's even possible, AM I RIGHT?
Swim
  • 04m 17s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

Had a great swim, 3rd overall I think. They were starting folks one every 20 seconds, so we were quite spread out. I managed to pass about 6 people on the swim. 3 of those were all on one wall, just sort of loitering. I didn't stick around to ask why. Anyway, I booked it into T1 and had a great T1.
What would you do differently?:

Swim 17s faster and get first out prize. :)
Transition 1
  • 00m
Bike
  • 1h 09m
  • 23 miles
  • 20.00 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a good ride, I knew that 19-year old Spencer was gunning for me in this race. I knew he'd beat me, but I really wanted him NOT to pass me on the bike. I could see him gaining on each loop. I dropped the hammer hard on the 3rd loop to hold him off. I'm glad I did.
What would you do differently?:

I messed up my hydration BAD on this one. For some reason I decided that instead of water in my aerobottle, like I normally run, I'd put double-strength-Cytomax, and bring no other bottles. Yeah, it was hot and this was a long bike course for a sprint. I was SO thirsty and all I had was HOT THICK sugar syrup. It was horrible I tell you. Horrible. I paid for this mistake on the run.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 15m 40s
  • 1.75 miles
  • 08m 57s  min/mile
Comments:

I was a hot mess on the run. Immediately off the bike my stomach tightened up. It wasn't GI cramps like I've had, it was higher, and it sucked. I had to walk for about a minute. I really wanted this AG win, so I ran through it. It got worse. I hit the first water station and had a big cup, which tasted amazing. I did the same on the second station. It was getting hot at this point, and I think 5 people passed me on the run, including Spencer.
What would you do differently?:

I need to drink more WATER on the bike, for sure.
Post race
Warm down:

Jumped back in the pool and drank cup after cup of water. Then I went to in-n-out burger and had Iced Tea and a Shake. It was fanfuckingtastic.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Stupid decisions

Event comments:

I love this race; it's a new regular for me. The cool weather up there and the facilities were nice. It wasn't crowded. We got there a little late and still got a parking spot right near the finish line.

Course: Hills hills hills. It was a nice course, 3 loops. I don't like to complain about race courses. BUT IF I DID, I'd complain that we had to dismount, run through transition, and remount once for each of the 3 loops. How nutty is that? Fun for the spectators though. They were loving it.

1 - NEVER a such thing as overcaffeinated...although I would like to see you in this state...and in a kiddie pool.

2 - MMM sugar syrup on the bike.

3 - 23 miles for a sprint? WOW!

4 - Kick Spencer in the nuts next time.

5 - Sorry about the crampys, I think it was still a pretty decent run all things considered.

6 - NICE WORK!!!!

Great job! Despite your hydration issues you still pulled in an AG first place. Nice work getting through it!

Soooo - not only did you win your AG, but you also learned a couple of things that you can apply and make yourself even better in your future races?  Sounds like a PERFECT race to me.  Great job - you are really kicking a$$!!

Great Race Chad! Strange to have a 23 mile bike on a sprint, and even with your difficulties on the run you totally rocked that course!

Great job! That looks like a cool sprint since it was bike heavy! The running through transition is strange though. Those Tri Family guys used to make you stop each lap to get a mark on your arm. Looks like they found a new way to do it. LOL

Your swim was really impressive too. Fast!

Wow! You had an awesome race and it sounds like a great venue!

I like the long bike, it was more than a sprint. You have really raced well this spring, keep it up
