Pre-race routine:

started with a BBQ the night before with TracyV, Shwimmycoachers, Craimyjo, Mr2Tony, TriOK and my lovely wife and child along with my wonderful inlaws!! All this happened after a small little expo in connection with the Triathlon during the day.
Event warmup:

Woke up, got ready, made sure TracyV was ready, loaded up, picked up KimK and then shwimmycoacher. It was about that time that i realize that shark bait was being affected by waaaaaaaaaaaay too much estrogen and was beginning to worry about how he was going to perform. got down to the site and started worrying about a parking spot, but then i saw an Emery's logo'd truck so said, screw it, they be my sponsor, im parking right next to that!!! ended up being RIGHT by the finish line!!! (and massage tables too!). picked a rack for shark bait to rest on (by this time i think the estrogen had worn off...i was hoping anyway.......) and set up my "Official Transition Towel" {courtesy of the Princeton Club......shhhhhhh} then went for a run. found an empty stall in the bathroom and decided i should make use of it then went back and body glided up and put on the wetsuit and told shark bait to get ready!! walked over to the shoreline and decided to get in for a quick warm up...............and then froze my testicles off!! O..M...FREAKING........G!!!! ok, '08 SOR was freakin cold but that wouldve felt like a hot tub compared to today!!! HOLY CRAP!!! heard a couple of people talking about bailing....dont blame them one bit. but, DTFU right? so i did. got out, walked over to the starting area and watched the first two waves go out. saw a couple of people doing this without wetsuits.......insane. oh, also saw a lady that just didnt look right to me, then it dawned on my as to why........hey lady, the zipper on the wetsuits goes in the back!!!!!
Swim
  • 20m 29s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 30s / 100 yards
Comments:

did i mention anything about shrinkage??? yeah, even tho im just a short white boy from the burbs, there was shrinkage going on due to the INSANELY cold water!!!! because of the coldness it seemed like EVERYONE in my wave had decided to walk as much as possible......well, i actually was TRI-ING to swim but everytime i would try i would literally swim into someones back, ugh. so i joined in the march of the penguins until i could get some "open" ice.........once i did i was able to get a good grove going but that didnt help the FREEZING FRICKIN COLD WATER!!!!
What would you do differently?:

i have heard that anywhere from 6-13 people were taken to the hospital due to hypothermia from this race............straight shot swim, down and back, i think they couldve moved the buouys in closer to shore, but that wouldve affected the olympic distance peeps so.......i dont know. saw LOTS of people heading in to the beach along the way, not sure how many dropped out or if they were just heading out to warm up. oh, the water was a wee bit chilly by the way!
Transition 1
  • 02m 54s
Comments:

somewhere from the exit of the water to the bike my foot started hurting.........more on that later. in T1, just before my bike, LADY DOWN!!! medical peeps working on her, but they had their bikes and equipment right in the path of where you need to run.........so T1 became an obstacle course complete with hops, skips and jumps!!!! coldness of the water still apparent as i fumbles with straps a bit.......
What would you do differently?:

swim in warmer water???? somehow heat the lake??? (believe me, i was doing my part in the water to warm things up!!!)
Bike
  • 34m 24s
  • 12.84 miles
  • 22.40 mile/hr
Comments:

wanted to hammer this as much as possible and wondered if i would be able to as when i got going and went to push hard with my right foot, pain....right where i was pushing......but, it went away so i pushed it as hard as i could. think i did ok as i was the 4th fastest bike split.......
What would you do differently?:

not swim in such frickin frigid lake temperatures!!!
Transition 2
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

running dismount........i like these!!!! had a LONG way to my spot but oh well.............was ok.
What would you do differently?:

not too much except maybe rack closer to the entrance, dunno tho.
Run
  • 19m 12s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

nice run, but again, out of transition the spot on my foot was bothersome again, didnt feel like a blister "hotspot" but more like a bone bruise, but once again, it went away.

passed a couple of people right away then another on the hill. after that got a cup of water from the BEST WATER STATION CREW EVER!!! (triplette's kids/kimk/jamie lee from instep!) and then started counting places as the leaders were coming back the same way we came........i was sitting in 9th at that point. saw a guy not that far in front and reeled him in, hit the turn around and by that point my legs were all juju'd and ready to rock! took the turn to go down the hill and saw two guys WALKING ON THE FRICKING DOWNHILL!!! WTF??? oh well, passed them and then worked hard to the finish line.
What would you do differently?:

dunno, felt good but maybe i conserved too much in the beginning in anticipation of a tuff hill that turned out to be not that bad for me.........

oh, and when i got home, i could barely walk up the steps. sat down to look at my foot to see how bad the bruise was and it ended up being..........A SMALL SHARD OF FREAKING GLASS!!! yeah, that couldve been alot worser fo sho!!
Post race
Warm down:

drank bottled water, walked the 50 ft (if that) to my van, grabbed the rest of the cappachino from the morning ride to the venue and then back out to the finishing area to cheer in other donks and peeps i know! got a calf and shoulder massage after that, then went back out on the course to cheer in traceyV while enjoying the company of the three little rugrats known as triplette's kids!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

nadda

Event comments:

wouldve gotten very high marks across the board (volunteers were awesome, awards were equally impressive, things were organized and on time.......) BUT on the website and all the informational documentation for this event, a post race BBQ was listed that did not happen. i understand that sometimes things change and all, BUT, i am sure that they did not change 5 minutes before the BBQ was suppose to happen. they couldve posted something to the effect of not having the BBQ which wouldve been fine, BUT, then they should have more than just plain bagels and orange wedges at the finish line................dunno, maybe im spoiled........

Way to rock it!  Great job overcoming the shrinkage inducing water and foot issues! I once thought some one was yelling at me about a piece of glass, turns out they were just saying I was a pain in the azz.

You swim like I do, but then you hop on that bike and BURN, BABY!!  And that little jog isn't too bad, either!

OUCH!  How did you pick that shard up?  Lucky you didn't get bigger damage out of it.

Way to represent, Donk! For such an impressive performance, I think someone should buy you one large BBQ sandwich, and I'm going to say that person is AmyJo. Well done! Now go de-glassify yourself and get ready for Moo.
