How long did you do tri's before you went for your 1st HIM?

I started this year, have completed 3 sprints, plan on bumping up to mainly Oly distance next season and doing the Longhorn 70.3 that Fall (2010). I've completed 4 marathons and have two halfs and a another full scheduled before the end of this year, but I have a lot of work to do on the bike.

Thanks!

One season before my first HIM. I think you'd be more than ready if you kept up your training over the next year

1st season: 2 sprints
2nd season: 3 sprints, 1 oly, half marathon
3rd season: started season with a HIM - handful of sprints, olys, half marys - ended with another HIM
4th season (this one!): like 3rd but added a full marathon, century ride and another HIM (3 total)
5th season (2010!): thinking 2-3 HIMs again, full mary, century ride(s), and ending with Full IM

I did 1 sprint a year before my first HIM.

However...I was a Cat 3 road racer, primarily long distance, for 5 years and have many, many years of OWS experience.

So for me it was all about building the run.

Just under 10 months between my first tri (Sept. 07) and my first HIM (July 08).  I'd been training for a total of 15 months by that point.  Did 3 sprints and 2 Olys before first HIM.

7 years and 40 triathlons before I got the guts to do a Half Iron...but you KNOW you can do it faster than that!!

1 race on a MTB and a deployment in between. It can be done with minimal experience, although you may not enjoy it

My first HIM (and triathlon) is on October 25th.  I cycled extensively last summer, will run my 2nd half marathon on October 4th and am hoping to float my way through the swim, complements of a new wetsuit.  We'll see...

I would have signed up for a few sprints and an oly beforehand but races are expensive and I live cheap. I'll do some simulated transitions before race day to work out my routine.

Just started training this year. I did my first sprint in July and first HIM on August 2. I found the run pretty tough, but the rest was great. I'm hooked and can't wait to do more.

First tri in June (oly) and then HIM mid July (vineman).  But my focus from day 1 in January was to train for a HIM.  For me, it was a big enough goal to focus on for 7 months.  I added the oly just so I was not a complete novice and had no issues with it.  The HIM got my attention but finished under 6 hours which was my goal.

This is my first year of Tris.  I started with a Sprint, did an Olympic a week later and finished the season with a HIM.  It sounds like you have a pretty goo base having completed 4 marathons.  I would think you be more than ready for a HIM next season.  I had never run any farther than 9 miles or bike more than 45 miles going into this year.  Don't sell yourself short.

Started in 2005.

First HIM in 2007.

Only one Oly before the HIM... no half marathon beforehand.

IM in 2008.

Only one HIM before the IM... no marathon before the IM.

And I have to say that finally in 2009 I'm becoming a decent athlete. Doing another HIM in Oct 2009.

This is my second season, and NO background in any of the 3 sports.
first season did a bunch of sprints and one olympic.

this season did 2 olympics then my first HIM, and did a sprint doing my second HIM next weekend.

totally doable - as you see some people do them as their first race....

You're about exactly where I was when I did my first half.  2-3 seasons of tri's, one olympic in each of those seasons.  4 marathons also.  I did my first HIM in 2002 at Timberman right after that, and it was sginificantly harder than my marathons.  A lot of that had to do with the fact that it was in the 90s during the run, and I really didn't know what I was doing in terms of pacing, nutrition, and strategy.  I did the same race the following year, and I still had a lot to learn.  I pulled back on the bike, and survived my run much better.  That difference alone gained me 20+ minutes of improvement.  If you practice and study nutrition on top of your training background,  you'll be fine doing a HIM.  And then before you know it... on your way to the full.

1st season - 1 aquathon, 3 sprints, 1 oly, 2 half marathons, 1 century (plus a few 80+ rides)
2nd season (this year) - will be 3 sprints, 2 olys, 1 half marathon, 1 century (lots of 50 milers), lots of 5 and 10ks
3rd season (planned) - half marathon, 1 long course du, HIM, then several sprints and olys, possibly another HIM in Nov.
4th season (tentative plan) - IMSG 2011
*No real history of any of the sports, except for some sporadic running.

Of course, all this is dependent on a lot of things, primarily me staying consistent with training and staying injury free.  Looks like you are on a good track.  Good luck!

I started training in late September 2008.  My first tri was Wildflower HIM in May, 2009.  First oly was 4 weeks later, my first IM is in 4 weeks!

Has anyone just went with the full iron man instead of starting off with the half?

My first triathlon was a HIM.  I had no previous experience in swimming or biking and ran recreationally for about two years, but never competed in any race.  I taught myself how to swim 9 months prior to the event and purchased my first bike 7 months before the event.  I completed the race in 6:00:3x, 3x seconds slower than my goal.

If I could do it on my limited experience, anyone can!

1st season: 1 sprint
2nd season: Some sprints and 1 international distance (little shorter than Oly)
3rd season: 1 HIM, some sprints and 1 International
4th season: 1 IM, some sprints and 1 international
5th season: 1 IM
6th season: 1 IM, 1 Double Iron
7th season: 1 IM
8th season: 1 Triple Iron (hopefully)

I have been doing this longer than I thought.

I started training in Jan this year for a HIM. I had a good base to start with. I am a Army guy and I always can easily max the APFT test. So I figured why not try a HIM.

I did not do any tri's going into it, went right to a HIM.

My biggest mistake was not knowing what I needed for nutrition for the whole time. I probably could have doubled what I took in. I didn't quite figure it out until 3/4 complete with the bike, then I started pounding to try and make up. Good thing I had no GI probs.

Even with all that said and getting semi BTFOed (broke the friggin off) I am now addicted to these and will do a full IM next year.
