This may news on COJ, but I was out of pocket for the past week and just getting caught up on my FB news.  Apparently Captain Phil from the Cornelia Marie suffered a massive stroke while Opilio fishing last week.

That guy needs a break.

Wasn't there an episode of this on the deadlist catch?

Two seasons ago he had a blood clot that went to his heart and that almost killed him but he recovered and came back to captain the next season.  This apparently happened last Friday when they were off-loading Opis.  From the article I read they went to find him and he was unconscious in his cabin.

And yes, I think his chain smoking days will be over.  I also can't imagine he will come back from this to ever captain the boat again.  Sad.  I really liked him.

I have to agree, I can't see the doctor clearing him for "duty" out on the open water's given the history IF he is able to walk/talk.

I'm not sure he was cleared for duty after the blood clot.
I feel for his kids and hope they see the writing on the wall since they both smoke like chimneys but it seems to be an occupational hazard, I believe all the captais smoke.  I often feel for the camera men in those wheel houses.

That's really sad.  I was surprised when he came back and was still smoking.  I would have thought the blood clot in the lungs and heart would have been enough to get him to change that.

Not surprising. Neglects his health, neglects his boat's mechanicals.

You'd think he'd work on both in the off season.

According to the Cornelia Marie's website, he's awake and talking, which is a great sign. His fishing days are probably over, but it sounds like he'll recover fairly well.

It's been an unlucky year for the Deadliest Catch guys... Jake Anderson's dad has been missing for weeks now. His truck was found beached on a gravel road with the keys still in the ignition and no sign of struggle, but that's the only trace so far.

All he does is smoke and drink Red Bulls.  I'm surprised the heart attack didn't change his lifestyle.

He didn't have a heart attack.  He had a pulmonary embolism.  The point remains the same however.  He didn't take care of himself at all.

None of the captains, or crews for that matter seem to take care of themselves.  Guess if crab fishing on the Bearing Sea won't kill them then smoking and caffeine will do the trick.

I have watched all the seasons of the show and it seems like the only captains that are not chain smokers are Andy and Jonathan on the Time Bandit.  Any coincidence that they have been the top boat for several seasons in a row?

Actually, Jonathan does smoke, but Andy doesn't and hates it and won't let Jonathan smoke in the wheelhouse!

As is the case with many blue-collar jobs in the food industry, safety and sanity just aren't priorities... and if I had a 20 hour workday, and found out it just became a 30+ hour workday because the processor told my boat to bring in the catch two days earlier or the difference in market price is coming out of my pocket... h3ll, I'd smoke and chug caffeine and not sleep too.

Feel for his family and sons who probably were there when it happened. Maybe they will take over the helm this season. I got a pretty good glimps of the lifestyle years back and it is tough on body and soul. Captain Phil smoking two cigarettes at once last season was a taste of the lifestyle.

I'm guessing that from his point of view, even if he loses mobility on one side, he can still skipper the boat in circles, which is a good part of the job.   he'll have to get a headset for the deck PA so he can b@tch at the crew while he's at the helm.

That scene where he was in bed in pain?  Yeah, I had that.  Even IM triathletes get those
