EagleMan Ironman 70.3 Triathlon - Triathlon1/2 Ironman

Cambridge, Maryland
United States
Columbia Triathlon Association
97F / 36C
Sunny
Total Time = 6h 36m 40s
Overall Rank = 953/1687
Age Group = Master Clyde
Age Group Rank = 20/38
Pre-race routine:

Wake up. Sunscreen. Coffee. Text Tony. Banana. Pack. Discover that Cambridge MD is now 106 miles from the Sun's surface.
Event warmup:

Get to race in car. Walk to 1/2 mile to transition. Fill tires with air. Get transition area set. Swim 100 meters. Hide in shade. Text Tony again. Calm TEAM TPR teammates about the RD's decision to prohibit wetsuits for the entire field.
Swim
  • 49m 17s
  • 2414 meters
  • 02m 02s / 100 meters
Comments:

Goggles filled about 1/10th after the first 1000 meters.
What would you do differently?:

Get a better idea of the straightest route before the swim. Stick with others when my goggles fill. Push the pace a little harder.
Transition 1
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

I struggled a little getting into my shoes. Not too bad in a HIM, but would have been a disastrous loss of time in a sprint.
What would you do differently?:

Practice mounting.
Bike
  • 3h 00m 54s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.57 mile/hr
Comments:

Hit the frigging wall at mile 40. Before that, I had been averaging over 20 mph. Grabbed every bottle of water that I could.
What would you do differently?:

Trust instincts over cop on turns.
Transition 2
  • 02m 43s
Comments:

This was a good transition. Didn't run all of the way back to the rack, but ran out of transition.
What would you do differently?:

Freeze fuel belt drinks and keep them in a cooler.
Run
  • 2h 42m 7s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

Original plan was to run to each water station and take a minute to drink water, ice, gatorade, gu, etc. Modified plan to 4 minute run, 1 minute walk. Bwahaha! HEAT INDEX OF 103F There were times that I walked for 2-3 minutes straight, and so did everyone around me. Ran until I felt queasy. Walked until queasiness subsided. God bless the ice at every water station. I have mild frostbite on my belly and back from pouring ice down the front and rear of my tri-top.
What would you do differently?:

Put a treadmill in a sauna for run training. Weigh less. Run more (over miles)
Post race
Warm down:

Collapsed into chair. Poured ice cold water down neck and drank water for 10 minutes. Walked around while waiting for massage. Got hosed down by fireman (No. Really)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I am slow. The swim was long. They moved Cambridge MD to Death Valley.

Tough day....nice race!

Great that they had enough ice for everyone for whole run. How any one can run without any shade when it is 106 real feel is beyond me..yikes!  Reminder to self don't sign up for this race..to hot!

Well written race report.

Awesome swim. I hadn't even taken the time to compare pro swim times to there average, I just saw they were still in the 20's and figured they had an easier time than I did.

The joke on the run course was that sometimes I thought the surface of the sun would have been preferable.

Nice job, Mike.  I too hit the wall on the bike at mile 40, so you definitely weren't alone.

If you raced as a Clyde, we were in the same swim wave (orange cap?).  I would have shouted "hey" if I'd known.

Way to hang in there on a very tough day. And your race report was fun to read.

My Mississippi friends headed up to EagleMan and pshawed me when I warned them it could be a very hot and unpleasant experience. They didn't believe it could be as hot or hotter than here.

I bet they believe me now.
