Subject: What's Your Favorite Workout?

Inside Triathlon magazine usually has a column where they ask the pros for their favorite workout. It's usually something like a 9,000 yard swim, followed by a hill workout on the bike - usually some place like Pike's Peak.

Well this month, I'm offering the magazine my favorite workout.

It's a brick ... a 35-mile bike ride at 75% max heart rate, follwed by a steady 4 mile run, also at 75%.

What's yours?

I like my big gear intervals with a hard tansition run.  4x15min @ 65-70rpm with 2min recovery spin @ 90+ rpm followed by a Z3 4-mile run at about 10k race pace.  Gets the burn going in my legs and simulates race conditions.

Nothing better stop me from doing my long slow run. I look forward to it all week.

I love running for distance...I'm not close yet, but I will definitely be a marathoner when I grow up.

I must not be as hardcore as all you guys...

My favorite Workout is on weighttraining days...I love the feeling of lifting something heavy and seeing if i can handle it..getting to 12 is a great feeling because then i get to up my stakes and lift more...

And i dont feel like i'm going to hyperventilate, fall, or drown...

Oh man, do I love taking off on a Saturday morning and riding for about 5 hours. I love it in the heat, in the cold, in the wind, in the rain and in any weather that gets tossed my way. It all will make you stronger.

But, I also love bricks -- good hard runs after a two to three hour bike. I love the feeling you get when you look down at your watch and you know you are flying because of all of the work you have put in that week.

Swimming.  Just swimming.  Especially OW swimming.  Not having sets, or times, just out there in the water.  I can get into a rhythm and it feels like I'm meditating almost.

Note:  only in nice water, no icky green things growing in it.

A 13 mile track workout?  Honestly sounds unnecessarily long for speed work...even for IM/marathon training.  How long does this take you to finish...2+ hours?

Even a bad day on the bike is better than a great day off the bike, but I really look forward to my group rides. There's nothing like being in the middle of a paceline. You trusting the rider in front of you and the rider on your rear wheel trusting you, especially downhill. A good paceline is poetry in motion.

Yeah it would take me about 2 hours. I did this as a part of marathon training.  Nothing like doing repeats on a pitch black track at 5 AM.  I would use this workout as a mid-length run in the middle of the week.  Mind you I would work up to this distance over the course of about 4 months.

3 quarter, quarter. On the track. Run 3 quarters of a mile at 75% race pace (basing on a 5k time). Then a 100m jog into an all out quarter then jog for a quarter mile recovery then do it 2 more times. I love it. Teaches me how to changes gears for the final 400m in the race.

The long ride. It's the best. The long run is good too. It's also great to "get" to do a fast zone 3-4 run after months of zone 1-2 base building.

A hilly, solo bike ride (though my knees haven't been taking that too well lately!) or cross-country skiing in the mountains with my bf and my dogs!
