Sunny
Total Time = 6h 40m 4s
Overall Rank = 591/793
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 53/67
Pre-race routine:

Did this one on very little sleep. Busy day on Saturday with the Mini-Mussel aid station and the kids, then doing a gig Saturday night, so no nap. The gig wasn't a big deal, it was just an acoustic thing at a private party. I played for two hours sitting down from 8 to 10 and was home at 10:40. I would have done that at home probably anyways. The problem was that I have a problem with chronic pain in my left hand and it was on 11 Saturday night. It woke me up a few times and prevented me from sleeping. I got around 2.5 hours sleep total. Not enough.
Event warmup:

Picked Dud up a little after 5:30, set up transition, found Ken and hung out until start time. Didn't have time to set up the EZ-UP.

All things considered, I felt ok.
Swim
  • 43m 31s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt ok. I expected to go a few minutes slower than last year which I did. I drafted off of Ken until a little after the first buoy then lost him. Navigation was ok. I pretty much just did this swim drafting off of people who seemed to be going my pace. I'd lose them at turns and pick up a new person. The last half of the canal I didn't have anyone to draft off of. Just took this easy.
Transition 1
  • 02m 42s
Bike
  • 3h 23m 5s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.54 mile/hr
Comments:

Infinit on the bike worked really well for me. I drank more and got in more calories on this ride than on previous HIMs.

Transition 2
  • 03m 47s
Run
  • 2h 26m 59s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

Rough run, the heat was a factor. About 3-4 miles in, I started having GI issues. My stomach didn't want to empty. I didn't want a repeat of Tupper Lake so I started walking. Walked most of miles 4-8, then started increasing the running. It was basically trying to manage my gut. If I felt nauseous I walked, otherwise I ran. Started taking coke around mile 6, I think that helped. I was able to run the last 5k.

At one point around mile 10 I was walking with an attractive young woman through an aid station and after we went through it I turned to her and said "Let's do it". She said "Ok" and we started running.

Only in a triathlon can a middle-aged guy turn to a 24 year old woman he just met, say that, and get that response.

I actually fell on the run course with about 1.5 miles to go. My left foot caught on one of the unmarked speed bumps and I went down. I remember seeing my hands in front of me as I was falling and thinking "that's a broken wrist, that won't do" so I pulled my hands back and rolled. Ended up back on my feet and kept running. I never actually stopped. Got a little road rash on my left hand and shoulder.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Very disappointed with this result. I'm sure the lack of sleep was a factor, but I really expected to do better. My training was much better this year but my performance was only marginally better. I could definitely have used more run training but it wasn't that bad.

I have my work cut out for me for my HIM in Sept.

Event comments:

Love the Musselman. Great, great race.

You did it!  And you didn't need an aid station at the end!  That's gotta be worth something.
Your fall sounded graceful.
Get your hand fixed.

Thanks for keeping me company on the run course for a little while around miles 8-9. The heat got to me bad during the run. I was feeling great during my swim and bike, I was even smiling during the run until I got to about mile 3 when my chest and back started cramping pretty severe.

Good job on finishing strong!

Nice to see that all that gymnastics training paid off during the fall!! And speaking of the fall I'd say you were distracted by your running companion! Great meeting you on Sat. and good luck in September.
