Subject: Masters swim drama..... Thought I'd share an e-mail one of the masters coaches shared with me. The subject of the e-mail is a guy that is fast, but likes to go dominate at beginners/intermediate masters swims. He's also just a brute - swims down the middle of the lane, does his own thing at masters without regard to the written workout (i.e., instead of 10 x 100, he'll do 10 x 100 IM), etc etc. None of the coaches had any cojones to ever confront him, so he gets into it with fellow swimmers that get sick of it. Apparently it got physical with him and this other gentleman in the e-mail. I had a run in once, but decided to just avoid the guy and, whenever he shows up, I pop over to the next fastest lane. Anyway, can you believe they have to treat grownups like this at a masters swim??? Names and locations redacted to protect the jerkoffs... "Team- Due to all the Master Swim drama between X and Y i have decided to make this real clear that we will no longer tolerate their behavior. As of today August 18th, 2010 X's membership is suspended from the _________location for 60 days. He may not come back to the _________until October 16th. Upon his return he will only be able to attend advance/int master swim classes. He will no longer has be able to attend the intro or beginning master classes. If he shows up to those classes please ask to leave. As of today August 18th, 2010 Y has also been suspended from our master program for 30 days. He may use the ________location but may not participate in the master program until September 17th. Upon his return I will discuss with him on whether he can participate in intro or beginning master classes. I ask that you all remain professional and do not discuss this matter with our members. If you have any question please ask me directly." |

Subject: RE: Masters swim drama..... WOW!!! I guess that's appropriate discipline for people of that age. But a 30 minute "time out" would have been more appropriate for people who act a different age. |

Master 1903 Portland, Oregon | Subject: RE: Masters swim drama..... Sounds like it was about time something happened with Mr. X. Not that Mr. Y should lose his temper to the degree of fisticuffs, of course. It's kindof amazing that the master's coaches let a situation get so completely out of hand. Seems like they could have grown a pair at some point and said something. Perhaps no one was behaving like a grown-up. At first I was jealous that you have "masters classes" plural. But if they're like that, I'll keep my one, thanks. Heh! |

I don't ever recommend getting violent, but I think it's too bad "y" got a short boot as well. I'm sure he had supporters that could vouch for him. Mr. Y is actually a good guy. I stop in on occasion in intermediate classes, Y is actually a good swimmer too, he just can't make the advanced class. But we don't (or try not to) be obnoxious about it, understanding that the workout is tailored to a certain speed. Anyway, I had heard these two got into it, then I went to one of the classes they were both in, and they were jawing at eachother. I think it's a case of one guy just being a and not even realizing it, and others responding to him. Y even asked me to report my issue with management to try to get the guy banned, but as I'd entered my own sort of detente with X, I refrained...... I could vouch for him only to say that I understand that he reacted as he did, but if it was violent I couldn't vouch for that. |

He's probably the type that thinks he owns the highway, isle in the grocery store, and must be the first one served when orderring a drink. sounds like a real d-bag! But the coaches needed to step in way before it got to this point. maybe they should ask for a spine this Christmas. |

But the coaches needed to step in way before it got to this point. maybe they should ask for a spine this Christmas. ^^This. Plus, I really think each and every person that was affected by X should have been reporting it EVERY time to management. If you sit by and do nothing, well, you are part of the problem too. "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." - Edmund Burke I realize that quote is about much larger issues than a master's swim, but the point is the same. And really if you won't stand up for the little things in life, how do you know you'll stand up for the bigger things. And yes, I have stood up against the "bully" swimmer at the pool, mainly because I didn't want him scaring off the beginners. |

The workouts could range from beginner to expert, but rules are rules. Swimmers should stick to whatever sets have been defined. Otherwise things get fuzzy. |
