Subject: My first crash...
So I had my first real crash Sunday.  Now, I've fallen over before, whether that be from my chain dropping climbing a hill or stupidly trying to turn around in gravel, but nothing like this.

I was doing a sprint tri Sunday morning. Pool swim went great...was 2nd out of the water, first out of transition.  Was feeling great on the bike...it was a fairly flat course, and I have been riding a lot more than usual the past 3 months.  I was feeling strong.  A little short of mile 5 of 12, I headed down a bit of a hill thru an intersection (the intersection was at the bottom, so it headed back uphill after you got thru it).  It was police blocked and there was no traffic, so I flew thru at about 30mph.  Somewhere thru the intersection, things went terribly wrong.  All I really remember is my left foot coming out of the pedal and flying forward with the force of my pedaling motion...and I knew I was going down.  Not really sure what happened after that, but I guess I hit the ground on my left side and proceeded to roll for a while.  After a few minutes to assess the damage and someone fixing my bike for me, I got up and finished.

This is my first experience with road rash.  Its really not fun!  I cant move my arms, and I can't sleep.  Plus I feel like one big bruise...I can barely move.  I was given silver sulfadiazine, so hopefully it works quickly.  For your viewing pleasure:

Funny how your mind intentially helps you forget the details...  Same thing happened on my first spill.  I know what happened before and gathered myself together after, but remeber nothing of the actual fall etc.   Impressive marks of courage you have there.

Wow!  glad you are okay!  I had my first crash on Sunday during timberman 70.3 also.  I should take some pictures of the road rash, but looks like I did more of a roll/cartwheel compared to you!  That's some seriously rash my man.

EEEEK!! That looks awful. I might not ride again if that happened to me and forget about finishing the race. I guess your bike survived?

Hope you heal quickly and get some rest!

Wow dude.  I got hit by a drunk driver on a motorcycle going 40 about 5 years ago and you have more road rash than I did.   Glad you didn't break anything and I am impressed that you finished.

Heal quickly my friend...

PS.   Not sure if I could of finished!

Thanks for the well wishes everyone.  I'm hoping I improve quickly, as I'm pretty miserable right now.

I'm not exactly sure why my foot came out.  I was told by friends who did the race that there was an intersection that had a couple of little bumps...sorta little up/down, uneven pavement.  Im not sure it was the same intersection, but it makes sense.  If I hit those unknowingly at 30, pedaling hard, in aero, it might have bounced me out of the bars enough and shifted my weight enough to force my foot out. I knew it was all over from there...

You should try the  "Nexcare™ Waterproof Skin Cover ATR10, 2 in x 24 in (5 cm x 60 cm) Roll" here is a link to the 3m website. http://www.shop3m.com/70071494713.html. I've used it and it is awesome because it pretty much takes away that stinging pain you get everytime something touches the road rash. Might help you get some sleep. It'll even stay on through a shower.

Ouch!!  That's a lot of carnage!  What race?  Get better - use some Aquaphor!!

Did you notice that it feels like you'll never stop moving once you hit the ground.  It has always
seemed to me like the crash is in slow motion.

Wow.  I'll give you a 10 on spread alone.  Nearly 360!  You're badazz for getting back on and finishing.  I just knocked on wood that I never get it that bad.

It was the Tri Rock race here in Rockwall, TX.  Fairly new pavement = sand paper on the skin!

Dude, your right hand/arm is wasted!  I would seriously consider getting rid of it and going Darth Vader with a new mechanical one... just make sure it's made of carbon...

Ouch man! Did something similar to you last year and road rash hurts! Heal up.... And make sure you keep it covered and moist- apparently that helps it heal.

To help you sleep...you can put Neosporin on your wounds and then wrap your arm in cellophane.

Also, I don't know if you did this, but if you go to the Emergency room and let them clean you up....that helps so much...but it's probably too late now. Just for future reference.

They put a numbing cream on the roadrash and then scrub it with a plastic brush...It makes it heal SO much faster, doesn't leave as much of a scar and makes it much easier to attend to.

I am waiting for the day I crash on my bike....but I've crashed so many times racing motocross and basically lived with roadrash for the past 15 years....lol.  One time my entire back was raw skin....not fun. A few days after it healed, it started to itch and I couldn't reach the center of my back....it was one of the worst experiences of my life.

Did you win?

Silvadene is your friend.  Use it.  It will keep the wound wet, but in the end it will heal much better that way.  It is a pain though because you'll have an "open wound" for about 10x as long as if you had let it dry out.

Thank a lot for posting these.  I looked at them right before lunch and then went out on my lunch time ride.   I hit 32 mph going down a chip-seal road and the only thing going thru my head was your pictures!

Ugh - sorry. That is impressive, though.

I am just healing up from mine.
Best advice I received was KEEP IT COVERED. All the time. Don't let it scab. That way it will move more easily and it also will not scar. I don't care about the scarring, but it did help it heal in about 10 days. It's still pink, but it's functional now.
