Subject: What does USAT Do For You?
I came across an interesting post on Everymantri.com here that asks: "Seriously, ask yourself...what has USAT done for me lately?"

I can't say I'm looking for them to do anything for me specifically. I'm satisfied that my money gets me an annual age group ranking, a quarterly magazine, and saves me some $$ in fees should I enter more than three USAT sanctioned races. Plus, it would be nice that they turn out a podium winner at the 2012 Olympics but that's not a requirement.

Other than that, not much. I'm quasi annoyed that they sell my info to sponsors, but its not enough to cause an uproar for me. My only suggestion would be to expect a better National Championship brand of races that competes or is on par with WTC's Clearwater or Kona.

So what so your response? Is what USAT done for you enough or should we expect more?

Insurance at races... That I pay for.

Really, aside from when I qualified for Nat's, paid the entry (the most expesive race I've signed up for in 6 years) but didn't go... Not a thing. But it's part of the game, so I play by the rules.

Nothing...other than being a PITA to have to pay that extra $10.

Being a member allows me to race. What more does it need to do?

Enough petty squabbling and bickering and there is a split where no one wins. That's what happens to a lot of good and even more bad setups.

(edit) If someone doesn't believe USAT does enough, perhaps that person should get to be a voting board member and change it.

My hope is that when my kids are old enough to be interested, my town/ area will have a USAT certified tri-club they can join.

So, what steps are you taking to make that happen?

As an organizer and administrator of an 80-member "USAT certified tri-club" I have to ask. These things do not happen by themselves, nor does the USAT cause them to happen. What they do is facilitate and support.

As a member, club administrator and race director I see plenty of what the USAT does. If I wasn't already late for my swim I'd start a list. Does it do enough, given it's budget and size? That's a much deeper question.

The insurance.
The savings that I don't have to pay for at every race has paid for USAT.

Come on, really, most people spend more for one dinner than it costs for membership.
Also as a few others have said there are many things behind the scenes that take place that we don't really see, but if we had to do for ourselves would result in no races or events most likely.

I personally wish they would cover more of the costs for TeamUSA races.

It seems that every other country at Worlds gets help from their equivalent USAT organization.  But on our end, they put on a good National qualifying race and then say, "Awesome job...now fit the rest of the bill".

I believe that the medals won by tons of athlete's at these races trumps the potential of a medal in an Olympic year.  It's apples to oranges if you ask me.  If people didn't have to spend so much cash to be on TeamUSA we would have more involved and have a stronger team = more medals.

That's just my 2 cents.

-They provide RULES for competitors to follow (if you think that's trivial, you haven't read the rules)
-They provide USAT Race Officials at races to ensure those rules are followed
-They provide me insurance at races
-They give me $10 off at races
-They provide annual age group rankings
-They provide training and motivational information for my 11 yr. old daughter, who just finished her second tri.
-They provide regular e-mails on interesting articles and upcoming events
-They provde a quarterly magazine on interesting articles and upcoming events
-They provide discounts on products and (coaching) services
-They provide cool car stickers

That's just off the top of my head.  I'm sure I could think of a few more if had more time.

Ask not what the USAT does for you,
but what you can do for the USAT.

There was a time before USAT (and even before Tri-Fed)... The spirit of the sport carried the day. The whole idea of "cheating" in a race didn't even exist.

RD's provided the insurance, and we paid for it in (much lowerm even accounting to inflation) entry fees.

No one cared about national rankings.

Even now, having been at about a half-dozen events this year, I've yet to see a USAT official.

Tri-Fed came into being when the issue of insurance came up... Then it became the existing USAT money-making machine when the subject of triathlon-in-the-Olympics became a looming reality.

Blame only the RDs for the lack of officials at your races. TheUSAT trains and equips officials, and offers them to theRD. But it is the RD who must choose to have them and pay them.

So run your own race, be the RD. Don't have anything to do with USAT. Let it catch on and USAT will no longer exist.

You need to speak to your RDs about this, not the USAT.  The USAT has them available, the RD does not take advantage (says the USAT official who has no plans but football for the next few weekends because he has not been asked to officiate).
The USAT has no ability to force anyone to use officials - even at sanctioned races - except for Regional Qualifiers or Championship races.

Right, but the point he's refuting is that the USAT "provides" officials to races.  If the RD has to fit a USAT official in his budget (and thereby raise our entry fees) then the USAT isn't "providing" squat.  Pimping maybe, but not providing.

I don't think the insurance that USAT offers for races is very comprehensive from what I've heard.  Very limited in what it covers.

I don't expect USAT to do anything for me.  I pay the yearly fee so that I can race the races I want to, and that's all I really expect for me personally.

Now, as far as what they could be doing for the sport as a whole, I wish they could follow the lead of other countries and really identify and develop our junior talent...

The person who said "provide" misspoke. As I said, they train and equip officials. Which is all I would expect a governing body to do in this regard. Similarly to a high school football game, except no one would attempt to play organized football w/o officials.

I race very few USAT races, but I maintain my membership partly for the few I do. I also like the magazine and I like to support the group that basically represents my favorite past time.   It's cheap enough that I don't give it much thought beyond that.
