Total Time = 6h 25m 9s
Overall Rank = 2095/3121
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 191/304
Pre-race routine:

Ate breakfast and took some nutritional supplements and a diet Pepsi Vanilla. Went to the swim start and waited in the rain as I was in the LAST wave.
Event warmup:

Not much
Swim
  • 29m 39s
  • 2143 yards
  • 01m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was a good swim. I waited until a few hundred yards in and things kind of got settled to start using the power stroke. A few weird zig-zag swimmers kept causing problems.
What would you do differently?:

Start further in front so that I can power stroke sooner.
Transition 1
  • 06m 35s
Comments:

Due to the rain this was a slow transition. I had my bike stuff in plastic bags under a towel. So I had to get that out on on me, with socks, and then load up my GU's and pills. Long way to go from my rack to the bike exit. (Just about the farthest you could be) and the field was muddy by then which had also seen ALL the other racers go through it in the earlier wave.
What would you do differently?:

Plan a little differently for rain Probably carry stuff in my suit pockets under the wetsuit so that I do not have to deal with it in transition.
Bike
  • 2h 56m 55s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.99 mile/hr
Comments:

Ranks for this were not available. I knew that the first 12 miles were flat and that it was easy to go out to hard. My coach said to take it easy here and I did. I stuck with the plan. I passed at least 500 peopl on the bike and was passed by maybe 50. It was challanging due to the rain. This was the first rain in 7 weeks and I was worried about all the oil coimg out of the road surface. Top speed was 38.8. Felt my back start to tighten up a little and thought it might be an omen for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Lose weight and improve my run so that I can really apply myself on the bike and not have to hold back so much.
Transition 2
  • 04m 37s
Comments:

Same issue with the first transition dealing with all my stuff in bags and in the rain was a PITA.
What would you do differently?:

Scrap some of the rain protection.
Run
  • 2h 47m 23s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Rankings also not shown for this. After 2 miles of running at about 9 min/ mile thing started to come apart. My back started to hurt and I went to a run/walk strategy which later became walk/run. Pain became a constant companion and was equal opportunity through my body: neck, quads knees, etc. None of this was cramping (that came afterwards). I fought through it all and came to the realization that my goal time (6 hours) was lost. Just gutted out the rest so that I could complete the sucker.

I wish I could relate some anecdotes or some local flavor here, but I was totally submerged in my own personal hurt locker for 2 and a half hours! I ddi use two packets of bio-freeze which were wonderful. However, do NOT wipe your eyes with that hand after applying it! Man that stuff stings!
What would you do differently?:

Lose weight and work on my run. Do even more and longer bricks.
Post race
Warm down:

Got a beer and pizza, had a massage where I had a wicked quad cramp!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weight and lack of proper conditioning.

Event comments:

What really made this race was doing it with friends. Harold, John Tracy, Scottie, Jennifer, and Alan! While I only saw Harold, Alan and Scottie out there it was still awesome to share the experience with them!

I forgot to mention that I met a 71 year old woman after the race. She was upset that they ran out of medals. I thought maybe I would give her mine and then ask for them to mail me one. So I asked her if this was her first HIM. She said it was her 15th! So, since it WAS my first I kept my medal.

I saw that lady on the run.  Katie ran up to her and said she wanted to be just like her when she grew up.  The lady laughed and said, "why do you want to be old, short and slow?"  I said she was targeting Sister Madona!

Huge congratulations on your first HIM!! I think you did fantastic. It sucked that you were the last wave.  My first olympic was like that and I just felt so out of the race.  I can't believe they ran out of medals. There is no excuse for that. Glad you got yours.  That was very generous of you to "potentially" offer yours and I agree with your decision.

You and I will keep plugging away on that run and we'll get there.  We should hook up for a few bike rides this off season.

CONGRATS on your first HIM....that is pretty cool.

Way to tough it out.  Sounds like the conditions sucked.

Take some time and start getting ready for Knoxville!

Awesome job Doug!  Tough run, that sucks but you fought through it.  Congrats on the first HIM!! To bad we didn't get to see each other out there on the course.   Really enjoyed hanging out with you, especially the beer drinking part.

Hopefully we'll do it again at Rev3!

Congrats man on the forst 70.3.  Good finish time with the rain as an obstical.  Smart move on holding back on the bike knowing you probably could have been much faster.  Just like me, keep working on the pounds and times will get much faster.  BTW, great swim time!  Thanks for letting me stay and enjoyed the cold beer!

Way to go Doug. I can appreciate having to work through your own world of hurt. I was there on my first also. Totally awesome that you stuck with it and finished. You don't really think about wiping your eyes after the freeze packs until it's too late right

Congrats again.
