Not only that, the new 5150 as well, all run by the Silverman RD Sept - 70.3 WC Oct - 5150 Nov - 2011, ITU long course and Silverman half, 2012 and after silverman
Accdg to Empfield's conversation with the RD (over on that board), no.... but.... you never know. Definitely not for 2011. 2012? I hope not. I would kick myself for never having gotten to do it. Maybe 2011 will be the year, as I understand they will have the ITU long course as well as SM half.
This will help break up the draft packs some, hopefully. I think you'll see that those who want a real "world championship" for this distance will embrace the move.
From a purely selfish perspective, I wonder what this does for the Muskoka 70.3? We've had Craig Alexander and other top pro's race this event every year - and of course CA won 3x in a row. But it's on the exact same date as the Vegas WC.
It also means that if I want to qualify for WC (if that were to ever somehow happen), I'd need to wait a full year after my qualifying race. If I wanted to do it in the same year I'm now forced to choose a different event and travel.
This sucks for what is only one of two Cdn 70.3 races.
While I am not a big fan of the WTC, I applaud this move and will give them credit for listening to the racers that have been disappointed in all of the drafting in Clearwater.
Now, whether this is a move to make sure that the WC race stays credible in the racing community or to make sure that it continues to sell out and attract sponsors makes no difference to me. It is a move in the right direction (sorry Florida folks).
ya, I would have stuck around for sure and grabbed the rolldown this year if they did it a year sooner. I think it just got a whole lot tougher to get into this one. No more rolling way down every qualifying race.
Just as I was contemplating eating my Clearwater entry fee due to lingering fatigue from my double IM season, I may go after all just to see what Clearwater is like and then be able to compare it to Vegas in future years....
