Subject: Do you eat at all u can eat buffets after big workouts?
Wondering if anyone else find all you can eat buffets a great proposition after big workouts? For me, it's usually something along the lines of a 20+ mile run or 5-6 hr bike - I know I shouldn't but I love those buffets that day...

No!!!! I have little self control when it comes to eating especially after a LONG workout , so I avoid all you can eat buffets.

I had a weight issue and was 130 pounds over weight until 5 years ago. I lost the weight through portion control and exercise. It took 2 years to loose the weight. I have kept it off for the past 3 years, but it still requires watching the portions so I don't gain it back. Even after a long run or ride I will have a large glass of Choc milk as an extra,then just eat a normal meal a short time later.

I am in the same boat as browncd...packed on a ton of weight and have been battling back to loose it.

If I go to a buffet...I usually pull my chair up to the food trough and hunker down till they throw me out.....and in the process loose the benefits of a nice long training session.

I stick to my plain old boring recovery regime...but I have to admit as I chug back my recovery drink and nible on some cottage cheese.....the odd thought of an all you can eat buffet slips into the process.

I'm not the type to stuff myself, generally eat moderate portions, and have not had a problem with weight. That said, I've really enjoyed a buffet after some of those REALLY big workouts. Food doesn't sound good at first, but once I get going, my body lets loose with its cravings.

There were some other posters for whom eating and weight have been a struggle. It seems like it depends on the type of metabolism you have.

I never go in those places. I even get a little nauseated when I drive by. The thought of feeding at a trough beside massive people who don't need to be there doesn't sit right with me. When I go out, I prefer good food in healthy portions.

Same here.  Since I know I have an issue with binge eating throughout my adult life, I choose not to fall into the trap of enabling that dysfunction by using workouts as an excuse to eat poorly.

THere is great buffet with sushi that i go to about once every 3 or 4weeks.  I finish a long work out about 2-3 hours before i go.  and I dont eat for almost a whole day after that.  I know it is not the smartest thing to do, but it is the only way i can afford sushi, with as much as of it as i can eat.

Generally I don't. The food at an AYCE never seems to be all that worthwhile to me. I'd rather eat a single serving of something delicious.

X2 on this. I stick to the same 800-1400 in one sitting. Only after a 3 hr run or 5+ hr bike minimum.And that typically consists of two peanut butter sandwiches with two classes of chocolate milk, one for each sandwich. That alone is around 1300 cal.

I actually indulge about once or twice a month after a not so long workout 1-2hrs depending if I do a brick, it's a Salad Bar AYCE and I go with my 2yo b/c it also has pizza and ice cream...I load up on the salad and veggies use minimal low cal dressing and then, to my chagrin, some kind of devil perches on my shoulder and says "ok now have some pizza and ice cream too, you know you want to!" ugh, so I do and that's the way it goes that day, luckily I don't struggle with weight so I can get away with it and it's worth it b/c my daughter has a blast piggin out on ice cream.

Yum.

Except not IMMEDIATELY following said workout.  I just walked in the door from a 62 mile ride and food would not go over well at the moment.  An hour from now, if I am still awake, absolutely!

(For the record, if that isn't my longest ride ever, it's within a couple miles of it.)

I don't really have a weight problem right now, and my metabolism is still fairly high at 29 y/o...so I don't mind going to a buffet on special occasions.  I will never make a point to go to one just because I had a big workout thought.

I'm actually going to a Japan victims fundraiser tonight which will feature 24 of the top local restaurants.  All you can eat...and you bet I'm going to stuff as much as I can down.  I did do a 60/2 mile bike/run this morning, and will run 12 miles tomorrow...so I'm not really worried.

That being said...I eat like a horse regardless of whether I go to a buffet or not.  During a hard training weekend, it's not uncommon that I'll eat 8-10k calories in those 2 days.  You gotta put it back in you know.  It's only 2pm right now here, and I estimate I've already taken in 2200-2500 calories.

This what I try to explain to friends, the difference between dieting and training. We are both doing the same thing exercising and eating. The difference is when training exercise and food are your friend. When you diet exercise and food are the enemy. Food is energy to train harder.
Training is the best of both worlds. 5k or IM who cares.

I don't understand what you mean here -- I am working toward losing weight, which I suppose is what you mean by diet, but exercise is not the enemy.  It's what makes the 30 pounds I've lost so far look more like 40!

 

There are 2 AYCE places that we sometimes eat at.  One is a salad-heavy place that also has soups, breads, and pasta; I go for veggies and soup only (no dressing, even).  The other is an Asian buffet that has mongolian grill and AYCE sushi and a bunch of really heavy greasy things.  I always get a loaded up veggie mongolian grill portion and some sushi.  A lot of it is about the choices you make, too.  I try to avoid the Ponderosa/Golden Coral type places, because the quality of the food is not on par with the quantity and it's hard to make good choices there.   And really, I don't make more than 1 or 2 trips, but I figure as long as I am gorging on raw, steamed, or lightly stir fried veggies, it isn't too bad.

I'll echo the others who avoid buffet lines. Unless I know I can have self-control, and that is not very often, I avoid them. I lost about 45 pounds and would like to keep it that way. After a long, heavy workout I do eat a little more, but I like to eat "a little more" of the healthy foods. I'll have a bigger salad, more fruit, or more lean protein. And I'll even treat myself with something like ice cream, but all in the right proportion. I'm also accountable to my fitness trainer.

I don't make a point of it, but, if I know an AYCEB is my future, I do try to get in a extra little bit that day.

While my performace at your average buffet is definitly in the, "wow, that is quite a bit" range it is no longer in the "are you serious, you are going back for more?" range. Only 2 plates the last time I went to the indian buffet when in the past I could have hit, oh gosh, I don't know, so very much more.

I find the biggest problem I have is these lunch and learns I go to with tons of sandwhiches and sweets (cookies brownies cakes). Anyways, if I go for a good run before one of those lunches I can end up with easy 3-4 big cookies (and that is after a plateful of fruit).

Another problem is the kids birthday parties, far worse than any AYCE.

I got some work to do on the ol' diet that is for sure.

LOL I used to do this with my dad when I was a teenager--he's a big guy and I was a growing kid, both training for marathons. You can imagine how much we ate--two places threatened to charge us extra! But now--I can't match my teenage appetite, and almost all buffets here in Saigon are at the top hotels; by the time tax and service charge are added, about US $40 to $50. Occasionally I go anyway if a long run or brick coincides with a holiday or birthday get-together. I like the variety,  which is probably lacking in my everyday diet. I've never had a weight problem or binge eating issues, but like a lot of busy athletes my day-to-day diet is pretty boring. At my last teacher's conference, we had a buffet with seafood and steak, and I'll admit I got my share of protein!  My usual big-workout refueling is a set brunch at a local cafe that includes a goodly but not ridiculous amount of food--bread basket, omelet, potatoes, roast tomato, fruit, juice, and coffee for one price. Plus they have international newspapers and magazines--a great post-workout chill.
