Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3am, ate some oatmeal with a few scoops of protein powder and a cup of green tea. Showered, loaded car, bathroom and left by 4:15am. Got to the parking lot that Linda had recommended shortly after 5:15, changed into tri shorts, ate my pb sandwich and drank some water, then took a power nap. Glad I got there early, but could've left about 30 minutes later, as it was, nice to see Linda roll into the parking lot at 5:45-6ish. Rode over to the start a few blocks away and picked up my packet etc.
Event warmup:

Swam a few hundred yards to get my self warmed up.
Swim
  • 46m 58s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

Ugh. My goggles immediately got kicked and the left one started to leak. I tried to tread and adjust them but couldn't seem to stop the leaking so kept my right eye open and swam with my left eye shut. Not the most fun experience but I tried about 4 or 5 more times to adjust it while swimming and then decided to forget about it and just empty it every 100 yds or so. I definitely swam too wide of the buoys, but tried to sight every 6th stroke so as not to get too far off target. Once I got done with the first lap, I took some time on shore to get the goggles tighter, but they would not cooperate. Geesh, these have not been leaking in the pool, who knows what happened. Not an excuse for swimming slowly or poor sighting, but it's like adding 20 lb weights to my ankles to have to stress about goggles leaking.

Got home and left eye was red and glassy from whatever was in that lake water. Or the kick. Who knows.

Got out of the water and tried to do the math, and then got depressed, so decided to concentrate on having a good bike.
What would you do differently?:

Not have my first OWS of the year be an olympic distance race. Only myself to blame.
Not get kicked in the eye, lol, probably my fault for such poor sighting.
Not take shortcuts with my swim.
Transition 1
  • 02m 59s
Comments:

This wasn't bad, I took a little extra time to get the wet gravel off my feet, but all in all, not bad, suit came off pretty easily. Shortest T1 was 2:04, so not as much lolly-gagging as I usually do.
Bike
  • 1h 13m 20s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.33 mile/hr
Comments:

Actually did pretty well on this bike course, there was one good hill on the back, but for the most part, really kept my cadence high and pushed a hard pace. The good thing about being such a slow swimmer is I never get passed on the bike. The bad thing about being such a slow swimmer is having to call out and go around other racers and feeling kind of bad about it.

For this race, I did water only every 15', one gu at 15, one at 45'...no sports drink to see if that would reduce my tendency to get stomach cramps on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Not be close so far behind! There were more than a few times I would think I was pushing it on the flats, but would look down and see myself in Zone 2, so would change gears and push harder to try to get up there into zone 3 or 4.
Transition 2
  • 02m 18s
Comments:

Happy with this. I switched to yankx laces for my short run on Saturday, and decided to try it out for this race. I am really happy I did, I did not stop to re-tie my shoelaces once and felt comfortable the whole run. Fumbled a little with my race belt.
What would you do differently?:

forgot my roctane gu, but i guess i didn't need it
Run
  • 47m 37s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

Crossed the timing mat and immediately saw a port o potty, ran in and thought i had to go, but nothing happened. wth? Anyhow, it gave me a short break of a minute or so to get ready to run a 10k.

Felt very strong, but eased into the run for the first 3 minutes, I usually go out too hard and then really slow down at the end. This time I definitely eased into my effort and then kept it strong the whole way. My garmin said 7:20 pace after the first 2 miles and I kept it right there until the last 0.2 miles, pushed it to the finish.

Started water at mile 2 and then pretty much every aid station after that. No cramps, so the bike nutrition worked quite well.
What would you do differently?:

Not stop at the port o potty.
Post race
Warm down:

A big hug from Linda at the finish line and then 2 bottles of Muscle milk with half a chicken burrito.

Won a bottle of endurolytes as a raffle prize. :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough open water swim practice and honestly need to consider taking some additional lessons with the summer races ramping up.

Event comments:

Great race, I would definitely come back again and try to do better on the swim!

So proud of you!! Great job!! I can only imagine how frustrating it was for you to have that goggle problem during the swim. Maybe he knocked the padding/glue a bit and you couldn't get suction again? Hate that for you!!!

Awesome job on the bike and the run. Super dupe easing into your speedy run pace! An excellent race! Onward!!!

Congratulations!

Nice Race.  Nothing worse than messed up googles on the swim.  You didn't have to copy my Knoxville swim to make me feel better!  Laughing

Nice bike and run paces..... see you at IM-Moo!

I feel for ya on the swim.  I know that depressing feeling b/t the swim and bike.  But great job moving past it and having a great bike/run.  And look at this way - you got your bad swim out of the way for the year.  You've got bigger races and will be 100% ready by then.  :-)

I have to admit, I don't get taking a shower to go swim in duck poop and run a race.  =)

Great job overcoming the early goggle trouble for a solid race!!!

Great job Kim.  I feel your pain with goggle issues, when I have those problems it throws my swim off quite a bit.

Loved reading your race report, Kim! Congrats on the great bike and run splits! I can't imagine having to get through the swim with those goggle issues, yuck! Good job toughing it out. You are going to ROCK IMWI!
