New Hill, North Carolina
United States
Set Up Events
82F / 28C
Sunny
Total Time = 00m
Overall Rank = 138/364
Age Group = 50-55
Age Group Rank = 14/30
Pre-race routine:

Could not sleep well. Got up at 4:20 AM and hit the road by 5AM. Ate cereal, and drank a diet Pepsi on the way to the site. It felt weird not having the usual faces here. No Scottie, Jennifer, Harold, Carol, Klowman, Tracy, Doug.
Event warmup:

Biked 5.5 miles, ran 1 mile and swam 200 yards. Ate a cliff bar.
Swim
  • 15m 37s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started in the 2nd to last wave. Got going well, but it was a little like a washing machine. Breathing became larbored after 300 yards. Adjusted my stroke and tried to lengthen my stroke and smooth things out. Passed people from the three previous waves by the time I hit shore.
What would you do differently?:

Get better sleep. I felt sluggish throughout this race.
Transition 1
  • 02m 17s
Comments:

It is a long run from the shore and around the transition area and then through most of the area to get to my raqck near the bike exit.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Bike
  • 50m 12s
  • 17.5 miles
  • 20.92 mile/hr
Comments:

Knew from my warm up that my quads were not 100%, but I did get rhythm periodically throughout the ride. Could have done better on the hills.
What would you do differently?:

Once again get better sleep.
Transition 2
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

Took a little long to get shoes on. I put my lift in my left shoe the night before, but did not loosen the xtenex ties on that shoe. This caused a little problem in the run too, explained below.
What would you do differently?:

Prep my equipment better.
Run
  • 27m 37s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

I kept it easy at the start but after a mile + I could not feel my left foot as my shoe was TOO tight. I should have adjusted the laces to be looser to account for the lift inside. Had to stop to loosen the shoe a little and never got a good rhythm from there. Personally, not a big fan of off road running, which about 3 miles of this is.
What would you do differently?:

Run more, lose weight and prepare my equipment better.
Post race
Warm down:

Ran a couple of easy miles after eating and drinking a bit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weight and bad planning.

Event comments:

Like this race as it is the longest sprint in the triangle area. Really need a better run. But this was a PR! (by about 2:30)

sorry I wasn't there to cheer you on.  Glad you see you are racing again.  Look at the positive side, at least you did't bring two left shoes this time
