Subject: Sweat issue -- Eyes Burn -- Need help

I've tried pretty much every product on the market regarding this issue and can't find anything.  About 20 miles into the bike my sweat starts coming down the helmet and into my eyes.  After another few minutes the burning is so bad I have to get out of aero and wipe my eyes.  The issue continues on the run, especially if I'm wearing sunglasses.  I've used a couple different pair of shades already to stop the issue (Scott & Ryders) and still can't get it to stop.

What do some of you pro's do out there to get the stop coming down the front of the helmet?

Not a pro, esp not on the bikeCool, but when running I always carry a small hanky or bandana to wipe the sweat. I even carry it in a race unless I know there will be lots of sponges; just pick it up in T2 along with hat or visor. Headbands don't seem to work for me. Here in Saigon, runs involve a whole lot of sweat! Bikewise, I believe there's a product called the Halo that goes under your helmet. No doubt the resident bike gurus can advise.  I don't seem to sweat much when biking on the road--guess it evaporates as I train in a pretty windy place, so I haven't bothered looking into this product.

Does your helmet have enough room or play in it for a 1/4 inch thick sweatband?  Check it out, it's what I use in my hockey helmet:  Apply some velcro pieces on the inside of the helmet, where your brow sits.  Not the fuzzy ones, the ones that are the stiff side of the velcro.  Then I use a sweatband that's made out of those Shamwow towel pieces.  They're super absorbent and can hold a ton of sweat.  The shamwow band, sewn inside a fuzzy fleece or other soft material pocket, will stick to the velcro and keep the sweat out of your eyes for a long time.

If I can find the time, I'll try and take a picture of what I'm talking about.

I have the same issue.  Get a Halo headband.  It doesn't try to prevent or absorb the sweat, but channels it around your eyes.

x3 on the Halo

I wear it under my helmet and it is great at making the sweat roll away from my eyes.  I live in the desert and it is not uncommon for me to be training during 100+ degree days.  Love this headband, actually have 3 different colors!  Thinking about getting the visor!

x4 on Halo for bike.  I take an extra with me on long rides and switch out.  Also, headsweats visor for the run is the best thing I've found.

x5 on the Halo...solved the exact same problem for me and fits just fine under helmet.  During a real long ride on a hot day it will eventually saturate but I've only had that happen to me 1 time and it was only for the last 5 miles.  Good idea from the above post to carry a spare and change out - I'll do that for next year.

Man, y'all don't ride hard enough. I can saturate a Halo to the point of uselessness in 5 minutes.

Unfortunately, I don't have a good solution to the eye sting on cycling. On running, you can solve it with a SWEATGutr (not as painful to wear as it looks) but it doesn't work well for road cycling due to the non-upright position of your head.

Less sunscreen directly over the eyes also may help a tad.

Another vote for the halo.  Saturated or not, it still works at getting sweat away from your eyes.  I wore mine on a century a few weeks ago in 95 degree temps.  It worked good - and I sweat alot.

WOW, sounds like I need to get this Halo a try.  I've never heard of it so I guess I have NOT tried every product on the market.  I will definately pick this up.  Hopefully it works well.  Thanks again guys.  Man, I love this site!

I actually have the same problem stated above.  I saturate the halo and it just drips SUPER salt saturated sweat into my eyes.  Honestly, the only thing I find that works is to start the channel of sweat down my nose or around my eyes.  After an hour, I'm SOL anyway.  During a race, I purposely pour water over my face to get rid of the salt.  Good luck and if you find anything that works, let me know.

Ok this may be kind of gross, but I found a way to keep the continual drip of sweat out of my eyes while cycling.  The dripping doesn't start until the padding in the helmet becomes saturated.  Therefore, keeping the padding less full of sweat is the key!

So..... Every now and then I kind of lean my head to the side and press my helmet against my forehead with my hand.  Lean to the other side and repeat.  A waterfall of sweat falls harmlessly away from your eyes!

No kidding, that seems to easy but its also common sense. Sounds to good to be true. I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

Another halo fan.  Even when it is saturated it helps.  It doesn't totally eliminate the problem but helps a ton.  On teh run I use a headsweats hat which also get saturated but at least your hands are free when you are running. Eddie Bauer has a little wipe thing that squashes into a small bag I attatch to my aero bottle for sweat emergencies.

The part of T1 wherein you ditch the goggles and leave them with your run stuff?  Skip it. Wink

Good idea! hehehe!  Makes sense actually.  Anyways, I wish I had this during my test ride this morning at the Magic Mountain Man bike course.  So much sweat got into my left eye I had to keep wiping it off.  Some of it dried onto my sunglasses that my view was obscured which disabled my ability to attack the descents more aggressively.  I ordered the Halo immediately after I read this thread!  Thanks!  I hope it helps.

Maybe I should get those goggles Kareem Abdul Jabbar wore during his NBA days. =)

I'll give the helmet squishing a shot first and see if that resolves the issue.  If not it sounds like Halo (which I've never heard of) is the way to go.  This forum kicks a$$.  I could have been strugling this issue with years but now suggestions are within minutes of my grasp.

Thanks all!

Have you tried a headband under your helmet and during running - I recommend Sparkly Soul for a non-slip headband - www.sparklysoul.com

For a hat - I recommend Nike.

Try a Headsweats skull cap.  Works like a head band but much thinner and covers your entire head.  No more sweat running down my face.  I've used it in 100 degree heat and it doesn't make your head any hotter than not wearing it as it is extremely thin.

Tried the headsweat 'skull cap' and it worked well for 20mi then became saturated.  It just post-pones the inevitable for a few extra miles for me.
