Why or why is it so difficult to get into the "two-a-day" routine? I've tried getting up earlier, I've tried laying out my clothes, I've tried putting my bike trainer in front of my bedroom door so that I have to move it in order to get out. Every morning it's, "Tomorrow, I swear I'll start tomorrow" as I swing madly for the snooze button. Maybe some of us are just destined to workout at night.

Tonight I've set up an intricate set of pullys and braces so that I can sleep while sitting on my bike. I'll fill you in on whether this works tomorrow morning.

I like to remember the saying, "If you don't train today somebody else will adn they will beat you tomorrow."  That gets me motivated.

So getting up early sucks, but it's just a matter of making it a habit. I'm lucky, cause I can get short work outs in at lunch (we have showers here at work).

If you can find a workout partner do it...or a morning swim group to meet with.  I am SOOOO not a morning person but knowing someone will be waiting for me gets me out of bed.  If I'm just getting up to workout on my own, it only happens 50% of the time...

Once upon a time, long ago and far away, I spent many years doing shift work. Much of it required long traveling times from home, and a lot of it also involved 12 hour shifts. Being quite young at the time, an active social life took precedence over sleep too.

When the clock goes off, your feet have to hit the floor within a couple of seconds and you don't stop moving. You may have to undo, or redo, some things but don't stop. Eventually, you wake up and start making conscious decisions but until then everything has to be where you can find it without thinking. Lay out your clothes and gear the night before. A snooze button lets you stop moving and that won't work. You have to start moving and keep moving. It gets easier once you're used to it.

I agree with the above post. I'd also suggest you gradually work back your rise time. So maybe start with getting up just 20 minutes earlier and doing a 15 minute workout. Then gradually get up earlier and increase the workout time. It is also very important to go to be earlier enough. I sometimes will set a timer at night to remind me it's time to go to bed, because I can get involved in something at night a lose track of time.

I lift weights for 30 mins at lunch everyday and then do cardio at night (swim, bike, run).

It keeps me from falling asleep at work in the pm.

My niece told me something very profound (read below).  Mind you, she's four, but it struck a chord.

I am not much of a morning person, so it took a bit for me to get used to morning workouts.  But now I love it, because I get to work ready to go, get a lot done, and don't feel guilty heading out for my evening workout.

"-----
Today is the Tomorrow Day!--My Niece"

I'm so taping that to my computer, my alarm clock, my pillow, my mirror.

Here's the morning after update. I mentioned that I arranged pulleys and braces so that I could sleep on my bike in an effort to do morning workouts. Here's how it turned out. The alarm woke me. I reached for my cage and grabbed my water bottle and started peddling. However, I forgot to securely fasten my bike to the trainer. My first hard crank sent my rear wheel off the trainer. My bike lurched forward and slammed into the side of my bed. My body went hurling over the bars and I landed softly in bed. During the fall I lost the grip on my water bottle and, wouldn't you know, it flew through the air and landed on my snooze button.

I awoke about an hour later with little recollection of what happened. So much for two-a-days.

What are you training for? Maybe a bit of heresy, but I don't do 2-a-day workouts although I occassionally brick on the weekends...you can look at my logs and races and see what kinda volume/race times I get from that type of schedule. I am not a compulsive regimented workout slave, I pretty much plug in workouts as I go along during the week and keep track of my weekly/monthly volume in each sport...maybe not the way to qualify for Kona, but it has gotten me started just fine in this sport.

Just get up and be happy to get out there. Take more pride in your training. It's not a job. It's something you enjoy. You have to want to do it. Enjoy it.

If you don't do morning, don't try. This year I have worked two a days in by running at lunch most days (My work does have showers, big perk) and then a couple times a week I bike on the trainer after the kids go to bed or go for a swim at the Y.
But it is funny, I can get up at O:my god it early to drive to a race with no effort, but I can't drag my self out of bed for a morning workout to save my life. You have to know yourself and develop a routine you can live with or you won't do it.
