Chicago Marathon - Run

Age Group Rank = 1586/
Pre-race routine:

Took train into the city. Parking with 40,000 racers plus 1,200,000 spectators is not my idea of fun, so I avoided it. :)

Met up with Hopper and Steve- before the race. Ran into JKBostic as well.

Took gel with water about 30 minutes before the start.
Event warmup:

Weasel my way into the starting pen close to the 3:50 pace group sign.
Run
  • 4h 08m 52s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 09m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

Was doing good until about mile 22. That's when I hit my wall. At that point, it was just a 'keep running' mantra. I didn't stop. Kept the legs turning over, and made it across the line.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, extremely happy with the race. Original goal was go in about 4:15. I started to think that I could go under 4, but you gotta respect that last 10k. The first 20 miles is hard, but that last 6.2 was brutal. :)
Post race
Warm down:

Try to keep legs from locking up as I made my way through the finish area, got my medal, my heat blanket, some water and food.

Made it out finally, and met up with Hopper and Steve- again. Walked about 6 blocks ( 8? ) until I got a cab to the train station to head home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall run fitness. That's only going to get better with time. I went in with no injuries and a solid plan, and came out with a pretty darn good execution.

Event comments:

Really big race, but hella organized, when you consider they are dealing with 40,000+ racers! They've got a pretty good method down and it worked.

You looked strong out there (at least at mile 18 ) and once we saw you at the finish you had a smile on your face.

That, to me, is considered an excellent 1st marathon!  Hey, you beat my first marathon time!!

(did I mention that I don't want to race you next year...you're getting too fast)

Yeah, I had a great experience for a first mary.  Would have been nice to go under 4:00, but if I look back to when I signed up, my goals were "finish" and "under 5:00".  So, I blew both of those out of the water.

Must... resist... goal... inflation...

You've still got me beat.  I might be getting fast, but I'm still chasing you.

Thanks again for coming out and cheering.  It made a world of difference to see friendly faces out there.

WOOOHOOOO! WTG Chris

You didn't say in your race report...what was your nutrition plan? What did they have at the aid stations?

Nutrition.  Eat like a pig all day on Saturday.    Well, just a lot of carbs/pasta.

Race morning: bowl of cereal with soy milk, odwalla superfood drink, 1 shot of espresso.  nibbled on clif bars, sipped water on way to the race.

Pre-race: 1 gel 30 min before start.

During race: 1-2 cups of water at every aid station ( about every 15 minutes ).  Gel at 1:30, 2:00, 2:30, 3:00, 3:30 ( or thereabouts ).  Took 1 endurolyte at 2:00 and 3:00.

Worked out pretty well.  Stomach was able to clear the gels and water.  I played it by ear, and didn't push too much gel.  I think I put off a couple feeds until the next aid station b/c stomach was feeling full.

Great job Chris!

You nailed it!  The half-way point is mile 20.  The last 10K can really hurt!   (During the 1993 race) I was begging Oreo cookies from a stranger at mile 20...craving carbs.

Anyway - - Awesome time, awesome effort!

Giddyup.  Great run, Chris.  Good to finally put name with face.  There's plenty more racing to do next year, count on seeing me at some point next season.  Enjoy Hawaii!!
