I used to bike in all weather.  Proper clothing makes temp no prob. But now I don't ride much under 40F unless the roads have been perfectly clear.  Ain't worth the risk of finding a patch of black ice during a hammerfest Frown

The cold isn't what keeps me in. I've ridden down to zero. It's all in how you dress.

I tend to avoid wet or snowy streets, though.

Why don't you have a trainer or rollers? That gives you another option when it's yucky and you have about 10 minutes of daylight total each day.

-20C is my cutoff.

Depending on what you are willing to ride in, then a trainer/rollers will give you the ability to ride through the winter.

trainer time?

I don't ride when it is under 50F unless it is supposed to warm up quickly.  My toes get too cold and turn into bricks.

I usually stop road riding in the high 40's.  Mountain biking can go down to 30 or so.  It's not the cold so much as having to bundle up.  Trying to move, I feel like Ralphie's little brother in A Christmas Story with all the gear on.  Just not as much fun.  I've gone running and skiing in snowstorms and below 0F before.

It never gets cold enough here (NorCal) where I couldn't ride. I've ridden in 40F temps and it wasn't pretty, but it was doable with the right clothing. But I usually won't ride if it's raining mostly because I think it's dangerous enough to not be worth it.

Which is not to say that I don't ever end up riding in the rain, but usually it happens because I get caught out in it unexpectedly or it's a race or other organized event that I can't postpone until the rain stops.

And the last time I rode in the rain, I crashed. This reinforced my belief that riding in the rain isn't safe enough to be worth it. (Though I suppose the fact that it was also dark out also didn't help.)

I used to ride if was above 20 with proper clothing. In 2008 I would do a long ride most every Sunday down on the Cape where roads in winter are bit better than were I live and I had some BT friends I rode with in the slower group of a bike club ride.

Recent years I tend to ride when over 40 as my feet and hands get cold more easily then they did few years ago. I do think I had some level of frostbite from riding that makes my hands and feet more sensitive to cold.

Be aware that cold sets in slowly so you may be really cold and not even know it. Finding clothes that wick the sweat and keep you warm is tough. Stopping for long when really cold is bad as the sweat is wet and makes you colder.

20-30 it depends on the wind too. I generally will not ride much past 50 miles in the cold, because that way if I get to cold I can get home quickly.

55 is my rule of thumb.  once it is that cold i have to wear gloves...and i dont do that.  so < 55 and i am on the trainer.

I have ridden all winter until I hit black ice once - sure glad I was wearing a helmet.  All too common so I just don't ride outside below 4 deg C (about 39F).  Windchill is a much greater concern to me.  The temperature can be fairly mild but with a strong wind it can really bite.

Not a great fan of frostbite either.

I'll ride outdoors down to about 25 F, but at those temps, outdoor rides are pretty short.... Winter is prime trainer time!

I do not like to ride in the cold so I cutoff in the upper 50's. I do not own any cold weather riding gear so just am not equiped. It's more than the temp that keeps me off the roads though when that time of year comes. It starts getting rainy, windy, debris on the side of the roads, puddles, and the worst is the sand and grime that starts to accumulate on shoulders.

Last weekend was the coldest I rode. It was 37 and not too bad! I used toe warmers with my 2 socks. I was able to last for a couple of hours with a face mask. hands started to get a little wet in my gloves from sweat. I think over 2 hours you would need to come home and change and get some dry clothes.

Below about 25 deg F it's just too cold for me.  I hesitate below 32.  You just have to wear SO much gear below those temps that it gets very uncomfortable on the bike.

I bicycle commute all year round.  Lowest temp was about 11F.  I don't think I've biked in the single digits.  As mentioned already, the right clothing is the key.

I'm not sure I will plan on many training rides below freezing especially if overcast --- will hop on the trainer.

if the sun is out, down in to the low 30's is doable for me.  I'll take 35 and sunny vs 45 cloudy and damp any day of the week.

I went to college in Fairbanks, Alaska. Some of the guys I hung out with lived in cabins off-campus and biked to and from school all winter. They had studded tires for their bikes and attached "gauntlet" style gloves to their handlebars. They claimed that it's never too cold, but sometimes you're underdressed. One guy told me about the worst wreck he had, claiming he forgot his goggles one morning, and the tears started to freeze his eyes shut going down a hill. He ended up hitting the snow berm on the side of the road.

It's been in the -40 range up there all week. Sometimes I miss it, but not so much this time of year!

Eh... depends on how motivated I am to ride outside over the bike trainer.

I have ridden when it was 32, which was pretty darn impressive for me. My feet and hands just can't seem to ever stay warm enough. My head does OK, but my face just gets frozen. I hate putting stuff over my face, because my breathing fogs up my glasses, and I can't hardly eat or drink.

Really anything under 55 degrees, I'm seeing how windy it is, and how much I'm really NOT wanting to ride the bike trainer.

Below 50 degrees = inside for me.  I just don't enjoy being cold and I never invested in winter garb.
