If a better bike only adds 3-5% to your speed how can one justify that price? How much would you pay for a bike and why? (Disclaimer: I'm MOP kinda guy. Ride a Trek 1.1 roadie w/ clip on aeros and have to admit that my favorate part of a race is passing some dude on a $3000.00 bike) Meh.... you can spend $9000 on a pair of wheels. If a slow guy has the money and wants a nice bike... who cares? Why do you feel so special passing someone of lesser abilities on a nice bike. What does it matter if someone slower than you has a higher disposable income? |

My favorite part of the race is interacting with people. I pass people and get passed during the race regularly but this baffles me. Never got it. Race your race, let them race their race. Perhaps both might have a better time of it. |

I was at Hermes in Las Vegas over the weekend and saw a hoody sweatshirt for $2,400....you honestly think someone who buys something like that is justifying how awesome that hoody sweatshirt is? If that amount of money is the difference between making your mortgage or not, then yeah, you better have some good justification behind a purchase that big....To some, it's dinner with a couple bottles of Screaming Eagle. I will clearly never be getting a 9K tri bike as I don't even know what Screaming Eagle is |

Me, I plan on upgrading my road bike this year from a 1985 steel bike to a carbon road bike from this decade. My budget is under $2500. If I was more committed to cycling and tris would I spend more? Probably. If I train for an IM distance race 2-3 years from now I can see myself spending $3-4K on a Tri Bike. Would I spend $9000? No. |

Extreme Veteran 408 Spokane, Wa | Subject: RE: How much $ and why mykmiller - 2011-12-07 11:06 AM Just to clear things up a little bit a tri bike does not generate more power. It does put you in a more aerodynamic position which is what makes you faster. A tri also does nothing to save your legs for the run either. Lastly, carbon is faster because it can be shaped into a more aerodynamic shape. Not really because it weighs less. A Tri bike is supposed to generate more power from your legs and at the same time help save your legs for the run. So a Tri bike costs more than a road bike that is similar. Now you want a carbon bike because it is lighter and we all know lighter means faster....right? That costs more than an aluminum bike. Now that bottom of the line carbon Tri bike needs new wheels to make it even lighter. New carbon aero bars to make it lighter. Anything with carbon in the name makes it more expensive. So I am guessing that $9,000 bike has top of the line accessories on it. All that adds up quickly. I have seen $15,000 bikes at bike shops. Me....I bought an older model new Tri bike for half the money and plan on adding to it as I go. |

What does it matter if someone slower than you has a higher disposable income? I agree completely. I have a Cervelo P3 that I paid $4500 for after upgrades. (we owned no credit cards at the time) I was a definite MOP. I simply wanted a nice ride that I would enjoy riding. It worked. If someone gets the majority of their enjoyment from passing a 250 lb Clyde on a nice bike they have a very sad life. My race enjoyment was soley dependent upon me. |

Veteran 555 | Subject: RE: How much $ and why My $1500 bike was a WAY nicer ride than my $750 bike. My $3000 bike is a WAY nicer ride than my $1500 bike. Beyond $3000... not so much WAY nicer, at least the one's I've tested. Nicer yes, but not so much bang for the extra bucks. Beyond $3000 it's more about fashion. I never buy clothes for a fashionable label; more for fit, comfort, utility, then style. Yes, to a point, more expensive clothes fit better and last longer. I pieced my bike together from ebay and online parts for $2400, specs compare to a $3000 bike. Plus a $200 professional fitting. I enjoy my "expensive" bike more. It fits well. It works well. Doesn't have any annoying clicks or noises. It makes me happy every time I ride it and I ride it more. So I think there's some physical benefit there. Here's how I explained it to my wife (I borrowed this from a BT forum post): This is why adults play with expensive toys. The time we adults spend at play, is rare, very selfish and expensive time, when compared to time spent with family or making a living. As such, an improvement of the quality of that time, and the results of the time spent, is quite valuable. |

Champion 5312 Calgary | Subject: RE: How much $ and why I bought a p2 -sl with the dura ace when I started for 2100 bucks with the shoes and pedals. It is lower middle of the line I think. I bought it because it was only 200 bucks more than the one a step down and that was the entry level one and the only one I could buy here in Calgary at the time and I thought I needed a tri bike to do an IM. It was also all I could afford. Now, I can afford much more. I am not going to buy a new tri bike. I won't even buy a new commuter bike, which I use much more often. I will buy the cheapest bike that won't fall apart that I can find. I am not careful with my stuff, I don't maintain it, I let it fall into disrepair. I don't generally like stuff. If I had to do it now, and buy a tri bike I wouldn't. I won't buy fancy wheels or lighter components. I have mixed feelings about that p2 sl, it sits in my basement right now with its tires flat. It served its purpose very well for the most part. I surely was faster and more comfortable on it had I just bought a used road bike and threw some aero bars on it. I feel funny sometimes when I see it though. Like it was more than I needed and a waste of money. I can see myself really getting into triathlons, wanting to qualify for something someday. If that day comes I will spend the money if I am convinced I will go faster. I would not hesitate to buy a 9k bike over a 4k bike over a 2k bike if I had a reasonable belief that it would help me get to my goal. I would buy the expensive rims and the aero water bottle holder. Of course, part of that deal would be swimming 5 days a week too.... |

I pushed my intro budget at $700 on a used bike. glad I did because I got better components, and event with limited expereince, could tell the difference between base model and the next one up. I'm lusting after a new roady, found the one I want FS used here for $1400 and discounted at the LBS for $1800--if I could afford it I'd probably have one of them, but I can't so it's another season on the old tricross.

But seriously, as others said, for some people, that's simply not a lot of money. For me, $175 is what I'll spend on a bike because that's the lowest price I could find on a used road bike when I looked. It's just a hobby for goodness sakes. I spend as little as I can to find functional equipment; any more than that and I feel like I'm taking money away from my household. |
