bgraboski - 2012-01-16 3:40 PM Think Crowie cared that Macca wasn't in the field this year?  Ummm no.

I don't think Chrissie and Macca are quite the same comparison.  Macca is far from undefeated and Crowie has already beaten him.

Agree with Fred.

Rinny know's she can win without CW in the race.  She hasn't been able to beat her though...not even when she isn't 100% like this past year.  CW has only been a pro for 5 years and has won 13 ironmans....never lost at the distance.  Nobody could possibly look in the mirror and convince themselves they are the best when she has beaten them up so badly the past few years.  She's 35 so hopefully she'll come back and race a couple of more....I wouldn't want to be giving Rinny another year to catch up to her but it could make for a great race in a couple of years.....right now...let's be honest though.  It was only even remotely close because of the accident...otherwise she is comfortably better and winning by 15 minutes ....

Good for her.  I was kinda hoping she'd be at IMKS 70.3 again this year.  Last year Leanda had a 3 minute or so lead on Chrissie heading into the run and Chrissie ran her down, and then some.  Oh yeah, all with one or two broken ribs.  I'm sure if Leanda is heading back to Kansas she would rather have Chrissie in the race.  So if Chrissie doesn't do the race this year, is that less incentive for Leanda to come back?

And then what?  People say that Rinny couldn't have beaten Wellington in her prime?  It doesn't work that way.  These people race whoever is there, and the best is whoever wins that race....  especially an event like an IM where so many variables (wind, temp, mechanical problems) turn into actual factors.

You race whoever shows up and you get to compare yourself to them, that's what drives competitors, not who they COULD have beaten if they WOULD have showed up.  If Rinny wins next year it's ridiculous to say that she couldn't have beaten Wellington on that day.

The UK still may have to pick up to 2 more female triathletes for the Olympics.

Any chance she may try to be one of them?

on her Twitter account, Chrissie stated "And no, for those who have asked, or were wondering, i am not pregnant"!

Does she read BT.com forums???

Practice makes perfect

It's been such an exciting day for triathlon, first Crissie and then the P5. When will we ever have time for work?

I think he did care.... difference is he went back to Kona and set a new course record! That is the one way that Rinny can silence the critics

That is what I was thinking. That is a lot of motivation to get out there and train. Not quite the same, but it is still there.

I read this earlier today and was very surprised.  The more I think about it, the happier I am for her. As a fan and father of two young girls, we enjoyed watching her compete. I think she set a great example for men/women and boys/girls on competing with great sportsmanship.  I am disappointed as a fan; but can totally understand her decision. Triathlon is a part of her life and she wants to experience and focus on the other parts.  That may be becoming a mother, market a book, raise funds for charity or whatever.  I totally respect her decision; but will miss cheering her on in IM races.

Is she taking a break from all racing? Or just the full IM stuff? Wonder if she'll be back at Timberman this year? It has been a big fundraiser for the Make a Wish foundation, and she's shown up to kick everyone's butt the past few years, then hand out finisher medals to the MOP/BOP folks as they came to the finish.

Anything can happen, but she's been pretty clear that she isn't going to compete in the Olympics, nor is she going to enter any ITU events where drafting is legal.

She is a great athlete and it will be interesting to not see her compete this year but its good to see that she has other priorities in her life which she wants to adress. Hopefully her book tour will come my way so I get a chance to meet her.

Mirinda Carfrae must be overjoyed with that news.

Whatever Chrissie is doing, I wish her well. Got the chance to meet her at a charity event a few weeks ago and she is a very classy person.

I doubt Rinny is happy with the news.  Would you be happy winning a race, knowing that its only because your main competition wasn't there?  If Rinny won Kona again this year without Chrissie there, I would bet that it would be a bit of a hollow victory.  Kind of like Ullrich winning if Lance didn't show up to the Tour one of those years.

.

I know what you're saying, but have to think that winning whether or not Crissie is in the field is still pretty satisfying.  For whomever the winner is this year, I hope the media doesn't use that line of questions i.e "do you think you would have won if Chrissie was in the field"...

It would really suck if Chrissy wasn't there and she still didn't win

My assumption was that she would focus more or short course and try for an Olympic shot, especially considering it's in London this year.  But I guess I could be wrong.

Look at her history at various distances. She's okay at OLY but the Emmas would eat her alive.

She has very specifically said that this is not her intention and that if she wanted to do this she would have started training for it a long time back.

Taking some well-deserved rest; promoting her new book; promoting triathlon and, perhaps, thinking of starting a family?????

Fred D - 2012-01-17 1:21 AM What's unusual about this story is that it's rare for an athlete to pull back in the peak of their prime professionally. I'm sure Chrissie is doing what she thinks is right, but it's not typical for an athlete to pull back from something in their absolute prime unless they really, really feel they need to. I applaud her, just curious why.

Yeah.  The last time we saw this was when Jordan retired (for the first time).
