Subject: cat question

My cat keeps flipping her water dish.  I tried one in a spill type tray (food and water sit in a tray above another one to capture spills). I've tried the kind with the bottle to make sure she always had water.  I tried a standard dish, and now  I have a tupperware with a rock in it. This worked for about a month, and now the past two days, yep, she's flipped it!

Anyone have a solution?  aside from her not having water till I get home, its very messy too!

smaller dish - or bigger one? the size could be the issue maybe? to control the mess until she grows out of it or you figure it out, keep the dish in the bath tub or a sink?

Set up a video camera.  I'd love to see it, and I'm sure a couple million others on youtube would too!

Maybe she could figure out how to drink out of one of those hamster-bottles? Or what about one of those dog bowls where the bottom is wider than the opening at the top? Those seem pretty unflippable.

Sorry, I have a bunch of questions:  Is this cat new to you?  How old?  Did the habit just start?  What is the dish made out of?  How wide is it?  She's either objecting to the dish, or she's playing.  If you have been using plastic, you may want to try glass or metal.  Plastic holds smells, and cats are so fastidious, she may be objecting to the smell of the dishes you are using.  The other thing is that with some cats they don't like their whiskers to touching the edge of the dish.  If it is not wide enough, or her face is wide (is she persian?) she may object to a narrow dish.  If she is playing (she's not a Bengal is she?), you will want to provide her with a 'playtime' water (a shallow litter box with a small amount of water in it, in the bathtub so she can splash all she wants) as well as a drinking water.  Good luck, keep us posted!

You're trying to rationalize the behavior of a cat. This can not be done.

My cats LOVED flipping their water dish, the mess, and probably most of all the reaction from me.

Like someone else said, big dog bowl that's wider at the base than the top (also known as a spaniel bowl). Get the kind with rubber on the bottom rim so it "sticks" to the floor.

I think I would figure out a way to attach her bowl to a large flat board so the cat had to stand on the board to touch the bowl.  Her own weight would prevent her from flipping the bowl.

Thanks guys! I've tried two metal and two plastic. She's definitely the playful/ornery type. A year old that is probably part Siamese but she's pretty small still (the cat probably runs 5 miles a day in my apartment). She loves when I take a shower and walks around the tub, then jumps in when it's still dripping. However she only flips it when I'm not home, so part of me thinks she is just being insolent. I've actually tried taping the dish to the wall or tied it to the fireplace, alas she figured that out too!

She's bored and is finding something amusing to do, watching all the water splash all over the place.

BIG dog bowls hold about 1.5 gallons or so. You need to do something drastic now or this will become something that you can never stop.

More cat toys. And once a month pull out the furniture and give them back to your cat. Cats get bored and they either get fat and lazy or find things to do that amuse them and annoy you.

My male cat opens cabinets and drawers. There isn't a single drawer or cabinet he hasn't figured out, except for those that I latch. I've walked into the house and it's like I've been robbed, every drawer and cabinet is open. He's startled the cr*p out of me when I've opened the pantry to grab the coffee and he's sitting on a shelf.

Of course, there is an alternative:

I have two kittens. They're 11 months old. One of them absolutely loves flipping the water dish. Their water is in a cool whip container. It had been happening for a while and I never knew what was going on...til I caught him. I heard this weird noise behind me so I turned around slowly to find him biting the side of the dish, picking it up and dropping it.

Not sure what the problem is. They have plenty of toys, food, water, etc. I tried a few other dishes, but they would still be flipped. All I ended up doing was putting the water dish in a 13x9 pan to at least avoid the mess and it keeps the water in some sort of container for them to drink. They are cats and pretty much do what they want. Any other solutions would be great though!

Right now your cat is programmed to think the water dish is a fun toy. You're allowing that to be ingrained by keeping that water dish.

If you want the behaviour to stop, get one the cat cannot turn over.

But it IS a fun toy. He's been much better lately since he's been caught more and got the dreaded spray water bottle punishment. If it continues I'll find another, I mean I do kinda need that baking dish occasionally.

I also had a cat that would open every drawer and cabinet.  She also would push out all the pots and pans after opening the cabinet or dump all the clothes out of the drawer.  She would also jump up and shut off the light switches.  If you tried to close the door to the bedroom at our condo, she would jump up and try to turn the door knob.  If that didn't work, she would stick her paw under the door and twang the door stopper until you let her in.  I always had to warn the cat sitters that she could toss the place in a day, so don't think we had been robbed.

She also would flip the water bowl.  In the end, she wanted her water bowl in the bathroom and she only wanted it filled with water from the tub spigot.  If I used any other water she would flip it, guess it does taste different.  Our current water bowl has the rubber around the edges and it prevents it from being flipped.

Move the water as far away as possible from the food bowl.  Cats are predators, they do not like to drink where they eat.

Easy toilet cleaning tip; give the little fella a leg up, close the lid and flush. Let it agitate for 4 minutes for a sparkling clean bowl. Get yourself a really long stick and make certain there aren't any small children or elderly folks around when you raise the lid...

My Molly-cat likes to put her paws into the water bowl, and lick the water off of her paws. She doesn't like to actually put her face into the bowl.

Every now and then she will put her paw into the bowl and sort of drag it out and catch the edge of the bowl, and flip it. It doesn't happen that often so I haven't tried to fix the issue. She always drinks off her paws though. ALWAYS.

Strange animals, cats are. Kiss

Leave a faucet dripping....in your bathroom, not the kitchen (or they'll be 'programmed' to jump on the kitchen counters). You don't want hair in your quinoa.

Take away the dish all together.

I got one of those. I've never seen Liz drink out of the water bowl, always dipping her paw and licking it off.

She also puts her paw into the food, gets a granule on her paw and then does the "I've got something on my paw" quick shake. Most of the time she then eats the piece of food that went flying but I swear she's painting abstract art with her food sometimes.

Our cat would sit next to the sink wanting us to turn the faucet on, we got one of those waterfall dishes.  Our cat drinks out from both the basin and out of the stream.  It's funny because when she drinks from the stream, it's so loud that you'd think it was a 200lb rottweiler (she only weighs 8lbs full grown).  The nice thing is that it goes a couple weeks before having to refill the tank.  If it runs low it will slurp and make noise which annoys you into refilling it immediately.

We had one of those as well.....but the cats would follow us into the bathroom and sit on the sink. We just gave up.

I'm so thankful I'm not the only one! I'll try doggie bowl first. I've been putting off the streaming dish...I was like I'm not letting her be one of those fancy cats. Btw her name is Toonces. I should just be glad she doesn't drive away in my car.
