Comments:

“The Mustache Dache is a slightly irreverent mustache-themed 5K with a killer post-race party to raise awareness and funds for men’s health, with an emphasis on prostate cancer. Men, women, and children are all invited to participate in the race, grow a mustache (if able), and register at Movember to become Mo’ Bros and Mo’ Sistas.”

5Ks are the hardest race for me. I respect endurance events but I don’t fear them. I sorta-kinda fear 5Ks. The tricky thing about them is the fine balance between pushing too hard or not pushing hard enough. In order for me to execute a race well I must be focused the entire time and it’s tough when you are treading on the edge of disaster.
This was the inaugural mustache dache. It was a huge event. With huge events come long lines for, well, everything. My priority list when I got there was this:
Get mustache painted on (my mustache was having some non-sticky double stick tape issues)
Get lines up near the front
Go Pee
Warm Up
Alright so, I got a disgustingly sweet ‘stache painted on (The ol’ Hulk Hogan with a full chinstrap) and had like 10 seconds to spare so I had to forgo warm-up and hitting the porta-potty if I wanted to start on time. I had to pee really bad, too. Like on a scale of 1 to 10 it was probably an 8.
I lined up near the front but was a few rows back. Not a huge deal but it would have been more helpful to be a little closer to the front. We took off and I held back just a little. My race plan was simple: Don’t go out too hard and stay focused. A few women passed me but I exercised a little self-control and held back. Sure enough, I settled into my pace and easily caught all of them. There were no mile markers and no water stations. It was actually kind of nice. I was able to really focus on my pace. I wished I would have been able to warm up but I felt alright, considering. About halfway through we turned a corner and I was able to see who was ahead of me. 2 girls were far enough I didn't think I could probably reel ‘em in without breaking from my plan but one was within striking distance. Once again I exercised a little self-control and patience and just kept my pace and reeled her in organically rather than forcing myself out of MY race. Once I passed her I surged a little bit just to make it official. My mouth was super dry and my saliva was really thick and I was having a little bit of a hard time breathing. I started coughing/choking on my own saliva the uh-force of the cough was just too much. I peed a little. Well shoot, I honestly don’t think this was the first time I peed my pants a little at a race (in a marathon I think sweat and urine become a little ambiguous) and it probably won’t be the last. The problem is once you “break the seal” it becomes really hard to hold it in. I had about a half mile left in the race and REALLY needed to go. I used my “sense of urgency” to pick it up a little and finished strong. I looked at the clock to see that I had FINALLY broken 20 minutes. I PRed by 47 seconds. That’s huge for a 5K. I had raced a 5K a while back and was pretty sick and just knew it wasn't very telling of where I was fitness wise. This did and I was stoked!!!
Anyway, J was at the finish line but I blew past her to the porta. Ahhhhhhhhhh sweet Jesus what a relief!!!!
I ended up getting 3rd woman overall and won my AG. I got some super cool swag including $25 gift card to a local Irish Pub, a glass, a mustache keychain, a package of some really tasty mexican spices and a bunch of other stuff.

What would you do differently?:

Warm Up
Pee beforehand/not pee my pants
Post race
Warm down:

Waited around for the award ceremony, hit up the photobooth with J

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Having to pee!!! Not warming up!

But I am not complaining, this was an excellent race and an excellent effort.

Event comments:

Forkin' fantastic event!!!

Course: Cinco kilometros of bristly adventure await you at the Mustache Dache. This rompish course minces its way through scenes both pastoral and bucolic; enjoy vistas of aquamarine splendor, aka Lake Washington. Be sure to sprightly converse with fellow Dachers as you walk, run, or trot your way along the streets paved with argentine silver. Be aware! You have 60 minutes to complete the course. After that, hordes of hacky-sackers, longboarders and community gardeners will overtake the run course and attempt to take your mustache hostage.

Wow Awesome Race!!! Sub 20 min 5k, swoon! You are such a rockstar, and look so athletic in the pix!

I like the term "organic" as it applies to a race.  I'm going to think about that ...

Oh, and great swag!

Super cool 'stache and awesome PR.  Maybe you should consider the mustache for Boston?  Clearly it give you some type of aerodynamic advantage!

Trying to wrap my head around your astounding numbers:

Run - 5k
Total Time = 19m 45s
Overall Rank = 3/1016
Age Group Rank = 1/801

Super awesome!!  Sounds like a fun race, and that 'stache is priceless, love the pics! And I think you've found what you need to do to PR races... love your comment about sailing right past J to hit the porta john!  But seriously, wow, congrats on blowing your PR out of the water and racing smart, too.  You continue to be my running idol!

Cool swag, too!

Once you "break the seal"... love that. So true, too! So now you know how to PR...don't pee, don't warm up and get that warm feeling from "breaking the seal."

Seriously, fantastic freakin' work and great stache schwag. I think this race shows some maturity in your running, woman. I mean we don't want to go all adult, but a little patience pays off.

Nice PR!

Not sure that I'd recommend the same unorthodox motivational tactic in a marathon-distance event, though.

I was thinking of doing a similar event for a bicycle race.  I wonder how many women we could get to sign up for "The Mustache Ride"

Awesome PR!! 47 seconds is HUGE in a 5K!

I agree, 5k's are hard to race and just not as much fun.  But a mustache Dache sounds wayyyyyy too fun!
