I hate/can't/am too drunk to do hard math when I tip so bad waitstaff always get 20% on the full bill including tax and drinks. Good waitstaff will get an extra $5/$10 on top and excellent waitstaff and those that forget to ring in an extra round or two will get an extra $20 - $40.

Bartenders get usually a minimum of $1 a drink and of course more if the drink is on the house or if they make something more that opening a bottle of beer.

Nothing is more embarrassing or annoying to me at a restaurant than eating/drinking with a bad tipper or watching someone try to calculate their share to the penny on a group bill.

In Canada we have a chain called Earls. The dress code for the waitresses seems to be VERY low cut blouse or dress, and VERY short miniskirts. And they bend over a lot. Since I am no longer 16, this doesn't amuse me,

Dude, I am 52 years old and that stuff amuses me.

A tip should be optional.  They should pay their people a regular wage.

I hate this argument. That's just not the way the system is set up.

So what is the appropriate amount?

15% for not good or average service.

20% for exceptional service?

We tip 20% if we get good service.  (almost always)

I'll tip 10% if the service is really bad.  (rarely happens)

Same here.

And I'll tell you if you're a chronic bad or non tipper (receiving great service) and a regular patron, your service WILL go down drastically. Why should anyone bother giving great service when they know it won't be rewarded?

Why should anyone expect a tip if they give really bad service?

I never did. I don't think people do, in general.

The point was that if you know you're not going to get tipped, you're clearly not going to go above and beyond. That's just a waste of time.

I always gave the best service I could just based out of personal pride.  Even if it was a waste of time.

Then I'd call them names behind their back after they confirmed my suspicions.

I tip 20% standard and 25% for good service.  I also give the benefit of the doubt and still 20% for bad service.  Everybody has a first day and everybody has bad days every now and then.

bradleyd3 - 2013-02-01 9:28 AM Usually a gratuity is added automatically for tables of 8 or more.....but that bill is only $35, so I'm guessing that it wasn't a large table...or was the 18% not added in, but the 'suggested amount'? If it was added in, then the Pastor actually paid the 18%. If not....then the waitress didn't get anything. I don't know.....somethings missing from the story.....

I wondered that as well. Apparently there was a large party and they split the check up. Some have said in an effort to avoid the auto gratuity, but I don't think there's any hard evidence that this was the reason.

She gave an interview where she said it was a party of 5 adults and 5 kids.

There's a whole lot wrong with the pastor's side of the story.  She claims after she crossed out the $6 tip she still left a $6 cash tip on the table.  She claims she still got charged the auto-tip on her credit card.  And the church she claims to be a pastor at does not exist.  At least, it does not exist at the address she gave.

So everyone jumped to conclusions... Like TeaLeaf said, everyone was wrong here.

I once gave 20% tip when I paid for a nice dinner for a group of 12. Then, when I got my cc bill, it had an additional 20% tip.  I called the restaurant and asked what was up with that and they said they automatically add 20%.  So I add 20%, then you add 20%?  That's not right and that is not what the receipt I signed says.  They credited back to the card the extra 20%.  "Most powerful force in the universe- Compounding interest." - Albert Einstein.

What I will say about Pastors is that every one I've dealt with in the last 5 years has made a point of tipping well and saying during their sermon "Make sure if you go out after services, you tip really well.  Everyone sees you saying grace before your meal and if you don't tip well, you make us all look bad."

If I'm wearing my church polo shirt, I tip 20% and then some... writing that stuff was just stupid...

When I waited tables in college, At Applebee's (I worked there for 3 years, but also waited tables at Chili's and Outback Steakhouse before Applebee's), and when I worked Sunday mornings none of the waiters/waitresses wanted to work the non-smoking section.

Working the non-smoking section on Sunday mornings was the worst. Typically the church crowd. They were VERY PICKY, uptight, and no one gave a good tip. Sure, maybe a $1 or $2 on a table where 4 people ate... but not a 15%-20% tip.

That was just my personal experience when I waited tables. I know not EVERYONE who eats after church are the same. I know a few of them weren't picky, weren't uptight, and tipped well. BUT the MAJORITY of the people were picky, uptight, and didn't tip. That's all I'm saying.

AND again... I know not EVERYONE who goes to church fits the description I gave.

The smoking section was the best Sunday mornings. It would get crowded around noon, they would order beers, be super chill, and leave a huge tip. Again, just my personal experience.

When someone is new, it shows, and they get a tip regardless. But someone having a bad day and taking out on the customer? No tip.

Let me be clear on this: When I say bad service, I am talking about exceptionally bad service. Ignoring the table for the whole time, taking 25 minutes to bring a refill when the restaurant isn't all that busy, rudeness, etc. The quality of the food is never taken out on the server, since they aren't responsible for that.

I can think of maybe 2-3 times I left no tip in my life, but believe me, they "earned" it.

  • Pastor writes "I give God 10%, why do you get 18" on receipt, crosses out automatic gratuity, tips zero, signs the receipt "Pastor Alois Bell."
  • Waitress shows receipt to co-worker
  • Bemused co-worker takes picture of receipt, posts it to Reddit
  • Picture goes viral.
  • Pastor realizes her name is all over the internet, calls Applebees, demands that waitress, managers be fired.
  • Applebee's fires co-worker
  • Redditors flood Applebee's FB page, Twitter feed, pastor's church site, with enraged comments.

I think just about everyone is in the wrong here... the pastor, the waitress who shared it on Reddit, and Applebee's. I don't have much sympathy for the pastor whatsoever.

Thoughts?

While I know the restaurant had to fire the waitress for embarrassing a customer, I get it... but I think if the pastor is going to have the balls to write something like that on a receipt she needs to have the balls to take the heat when it is posted all over the internet.

Oh, here in Dallas, TX we have... REDNECK HEAVEN.

http://redneckheaven.com/

The girls wear next to nothing. Look at the photos: http://redneckheaven.com/photos.html

They are wearing bra and panties.

I personally haven't been there, but I saw a FB picture posted from a gal who worked there. I was appalled. It was shocking.

I mean, it's a restaurant. Not a bar. Not a strip club.

I had the EXACT same experiences!

I know *all* of us here tip 20% or more Foot in mouth but man, when/why did (the majority of) church-goers (I served) get this way? Why don't they tip? I'm really curious. Is it the frugal/Dave Ramsay/don't spend a dime-mentality or what?

For the record I grew up in one of the most religious households you could imagine and my father was/is an extremely generous tipper - so when I started waiting tables I was shocked that others from my same background did not do the same...

I have no problem with places like that, but I won't tip extra just for flashing the goods. I'm not stupid enough to think a waitress there wants to be mroe than my waitress because she smiles at me and flashes her hoo-ha.

There's a bar/grill in St. Louis that has body paint Fridays.  The girls wear nothing but bikini bottoms and paint.  I've never actually been, but not because I'm not opposed to it.  The line is literally out the door throughout the entire lunch shift.  It's like Chris Rock says, "nobody goes to Hooters for wings".

gr33n - 2013-02-01 10:16 AM Seriously the IRS is ok with servers only reporting 15% of their income ?

It's 15% of their sales upon which are tip able I believe.

I worked as a server at Applebee's in College.  A family once left me a penny, and they got excellent service since they were the only ones in my section at 3pm in the afternoon.

I also had a bunch of teenagers write "Tip: look both ways before crossing the street".

I saw it all at Applebee's, but I bet I averaged about 18% for tips in the long run.

The best tippers were usually the college students.

A few weeks ago I seen a guy leave a penny along with the tip.  I stopped to pick up breakfast after work on the way home.  This is a small place and I was talking with him and the second cook was sitting at the counter eating.

Anyways The old guy said the Penny is suppose to be for good luck.

I never heard that one before, but the cook nodded his head and was agreeing.

I am trying to raise my daughter with the knowledge that she doesn't have to flash the customer in order to make money.

What if she wants to?

Read what I write. I said that she wont HAVE to. Deciding on her own is her choice. My job is to make sure that she has the tools, the ability and the judgement to make the right choices.

I did read what you wrote; the implication is that someone having to dress a certain way is outside their control. It's always about choice.

My whole town revolves on that kind of amusement.

Oh, here in Dallas, TX we have... REDNECK HEAVEN. http://redneckheaven.com/The girls wear next to nothing. Look at the photos: http://redneckheaven.com/photos.htmlThey are wearing bra and panties. I personally haven't been there, but I saw a FB picture posted from a gal who worked there. I was appalled. It was shocking. I mean, it's a restaurant. Not a bar. Not a strip club.
I have no problem with places like that, but I won't tip extra just for flashing the goods. I'm not stupid enough to think a waitress there wants to be mroe than my waitress because she smiles at me and flashes her hoo-ha.

I'm sure glad we don't have anything like that here in Vegas...

I've never been to a place like that in Vegas. Well, recently, anyway. Wayyy back in the day I went to a club called `The Beach.' where all the wait staff was wearing bikinis. Usually it's the customers who are trying to be naked, not the servers or bartenders.
