Subject: Race clothing for Half Ironman

I've done a couple of Olympics and Sprints, but Oliver will be my first Half Iron distance this June.  My question is for T2 during a Half, do most people strip off the Tri-Shorts and replace with running specific shorts/Underwear etc...  I ran the 10km fine in Tri-Shorts, but I can see doubling that may cause some serious chaffing.

Most people just wear tri shorts the whole time. It's against rules to strip all the way down and only full IMs have changing tents for that purpose.

You could always re-apply some chamois cream in transition!!

That being said, sometimes it's a matter of more mileage in the shorts to thicken up the skin ( my sit bones are like leather these days ) or even trying a different pair of tri-shorts that fit your body better.

There was another post on this same topic a few days ago...short answer is it's up to you...but I don't think "most" change; some do, but my observations is most do not...certainly not anyone looking to turn in a top time.

Personally, I find my tri shorts or tri suit to be more comfortable with less chafing than running shorts. Also, taking time to change is just wasting time, in my opinion....even a "quick change" will cost you at least 60 seconds, if not more depending upon changing tent location and congestion. If you are less concerned about time and more comfortable changing, then by all means do it.

I apply Body Glide to all of my "areas" before a race and before any run longer than a few miles. Between that and insuring you have high quality, well fitting race clothes, you should have no comfort issues. (You should also do some training runs and brick workouts in your race gear so race day is not the first time you wear it.)

Oliver transition has change tents:

I never changed for either halves or full.  Tri shorts don't chafe at all, I prefer running in them.

Tri shorts are designed to fit comfortably on the ride and the run.  If yours don't, you may have an ill fitting pair.  You have plenty of time, I'd try out different styles and brands.

Why waste precious transition time changing if you don't have to?

This is a nice additional use of the long bike/short run bricks.  Trying out the race gear.  I love my trishorts!

I wear a one piece trisuit for the whole race no matter the distance, Sprint to IM.

For an HIM, you typically do not see much wardrobe change during the event.  Trishort or trisuit all the way.

I would say just stay in the tri shorts, that is what they are made for.  In the longer distances with running shorts you may get more chache due to loose clothing...I know i did when I wore running shorts during my last marathon...never happend when I had tri shorts on.

For my HIMs I had a one piece tri suit that I wore the whole time, plus a wetsuit on the swim for one of them, was required to have one.

I will be using the one piece for sprints/olympic this season and a two piece suit for the HIM.

Just chiming in.  Only done one IM and I changed for that.  Done 7 HIMs and just use trishorts, but I also add a DeSoto saddle cover.   Gives a little extra comfort, to me at least.

Speedo'd my first half.  That was the same day I found out what a tri short was.

If only there was a website we could go to and ask newb questions about triathlon

Not to get off the topic of speedos, but do you use some sort of chamois butter? Does it break down in the water? Still haven't figured out what I am going to do about that since it is a stable of my long rides.

I've never done a full ironman, but I did not use (or need) any chamois butter for HIM.  Trisuit all the way for me (sprint to HIM), more comfortable than shorts/top.

Some guy did this for an HIM around here. He'd obviously been training in longer shorts up to that point and also wore compression socks for the race. It cannot be unseen.

I've done HIM's in trisuits and tri shorts. If you put your time in the saddle during training, you shouldn't have a problem with either.
