I'm sure it's been discussed at nausea, but I can't find any threads on it, so I'm asking again..

I smell like a pool, as usual today.  I get the occasional observation from a co-worker along the lines of "You went swimming this morning, didn't you?  I can smell it!"  I work with a great and supportive bunch, so it isn't a problem.  I just really don't want to smell like the pool.

I shave my head, so I don't need any shampoo.  Right now I'm using Dove Men+care bar soap.  And I give my head and face an extra wash with whatever the stuff that's attached to the wall in the showers at the gym.  It's foamy, I don't know what it is...

Tonight, I'm going to run and I'm going to emit a Chlorine odor the entire time..

So, what's the trick?  Is there one?  How can I get the pool smell off me?!?

Get some real soap. Dove is 1/3 moisturizing cream.  Get a manly soap with a manly soap smell to mask the chlorine.  Sheep pee will do the same, but I'd try different soap first.

Look at the bright side, it's much better than smelling like poo.

No, seriously, I've been swimming 30 years or so and I don't know of a trick, I can smell the chlorine when I shower next day. AFAIK part has to do with your skin being washed out of natural moisture and part chlorine being absorbed by the skin.

I've found that longer showers doesn't work, you sort of have to wash the skin from inside out: 10minutes in the sauna may have you sweating and that can take some of the scent. Alternatively a intensive run could work too.

Another thing which may be good, at least for your skin is moisturising cream. Lightly perfumed or natural scent will camouflage the chlorine smell.

ETA: While at it, your hair may get a greenish reflection, in particular blond hair. I recall spending lots of money on special products that should prevent that. In the end the most effective is to use a cap.

I wouldn't say it's been discussed ad nauseum , but I've seen several suggestions throughout the years about remedies.

What I do:

1.  Shower before swim so my cells are full of fresh water.  Might be an old wives tale.

2.  After I use a Suave product that you can find in the kids shampoo section at Target, etc.   It's called "swim & sport".  It's about $3 bucks and works just as well as anything.  I lather up everything with it.

Then I use lotion and stuff, but that's it.  I do still smell like chlorine to me, but the only person who mentions it is my husband.  Not passersby.

Good luck!

P.S. I like the smell

It's also a rule at most (all???) pools.

I don't mind smelling like a pool.

Good suggestions and I think things reduce but not eliminate the smell. I shower before and then rinse on deck after before about 10 minutes in sauna. I then shower.

I still can smell it when i run at lunch but not nearly as bad.

Others may dismiss, but the secret is the steam room after. I've smelled like a pool for 30+ years until I sat in a steam room immediately following my workouts. as soon as the sweat starts beading/dripping. I'm done. The chemicals have been sweat out and I smell like the rest of the population.

try it

I do to and as soon as I think I have the solution I'll go for a run and it seems to ooze out with the sweat...the upside is that a really sweaty run seems to take care of it.

Oooo...I love that smell!

The "trick" seems to be the second shower later in the day OR the sweating it out via workout thing...I always smell like a pool until one of the two happens.

Take a long shower first to have your skin absorb non chlorine water, helps also prevent greensih hair.

I might have to try this for special occasions (more than just going home, sorry hubby).  What is the window of time you need to get into the shower after your sweat session for it to work?

So, as long as I swim hard enough to sweat, I'm good?

mcmanusclan5 - 2013-03-15 4:17 PM So, as long as I swim hard enough to sweat, I'm good?

Not from my experience. I live in Texas, so we've had plenty of hot swims that got us sweating. I think it was the sweating out of the chemicals AND having it drip off the body that did the trick. Being saturated in the pool water means the chemicals get everywhere. If you sweat in the pool I think it helps, but you'll still smell. Same with going on a bike ride right away or something, chemicals sweat out and then dry back onto your skin as the breeze cools you. It was that head to toe sweating that made the difference for me. Just a few minutes immediately following the swim (at 24 hour fitness the steam room is in the pool area). big difference though.

This is just my experience so try it for yourself.

I use Ultraswim shampoo and that takes care of the smell in the hair and also eliminated the problem I had with my hair drying out. I haven't used this other product but it gets a good review here: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/mobile/Article.asp?articleid=2602
