Unfortunately, there will also be some legislators that feel they need to "do SOMETHING" and end up restricting citizen's rights while patting themselves on the back for doing so.

Agreed.

Yep, there's going to be a lot of stuff like this out there.

I was listening to the news this morning and they had a guy on talking about the Saudi National "suspect" that's in the hospital.  They said he was burned badly, running from the explosion area,  smelled of explosives, and said something to the effect of "did another bomb just go off".

Their commentary was along the lines of "he was obviously in on it" because who else would smell of explosives and why would you run from an explosion area, you should just lay there and let help come for you.

I was seriously laughing out loud at them.  Obviously none of us have any idea if he was involved or not, but one would think if you just got burned in an explosion it's likely that you may smell of the explosives and it sounds perfectly reasonable to be running from an area where a bomb just went off.

So, long story short. There will be a lot of speculation, over-reaction, and ultimately the facts will come out.

Unfortunately, you are most likely correct.  All for the dog and pony show that makes people feel safer.  Eventually we, as a people, need to come to grips that there will never be anything as 100% safe.  Never will be.  The more we layer 'security' and restrict our rights, the more 'they' win.  It's really that simple.

In regards to those 2 people, they will get a lawyer, make some cash for an over-reaction and call it a day.  And rightfully so, IMHO.

This is so true even just yesterday. There were literally thousands of police in the area where this took place. I heard on the news they had bomb sniffing dogs and metal detectors at the event as well.

Two guys pulled because they were "talking in a foreign language" after first being pulled off the plane a first time for additional screening, cleared and reseated.

I dunno, I'd be kinda pissed if I got profiled and would probably talk to the person I got profiled with too.

I think they person who complained should also have been pulled from the flight.  If there's suspicious activity enough to warrant pulling the other two guys, then the person who reported it should probably be interviewed as well.  Surely it should be more involved than ringing a call button, getting two guys thrown off a flight because "I feel uncomfortable they are talking a foreign language", and continuing on your merry way.

Exactly right, which is the the "see something, say something" campaign is flawed.  Many people share your point of view when there is an MWAG call made.

X2.

I saw something on a ticker last night saying, "No one has been arrested, no unexploded bombs have been found, and there's no evidence that metal ball-bearings were used in any of the devices.", all of which comprises about 80% of what we "knew" two hours after the explosions.

You know what would be a nice knee-jerk response to a national tragedy? Instead of everyone going from zero to crazy about anyone foreign after a terrorist incident or about "you-know-what" after any kind of mass shooting, it would be nice if the ridiculous rumor-mongering, masquerading as news coverage, of this incident and some of the other recent ones encouraged everyone to demand better, more responsible reporting from the various news outlets.

This whole "shoot first, print a retraction later (maybe)" strategy just gets more and more out of hand with every new incident, to the point that you can't pay attention to what comes out of any news outlet for at least 36 hours after anything happens.

Is there going to be a push for background checks and waiting periods to buy pressure cookers?

What about a garage sale loophole?

Possibly just ban them?

You mean like posting hundreds of National Guard troops all over Boston the day after the attack? It feels good, I guess, to some. As I posted earlier, sitting in the Starbucks at the Westin drinking coffee with armed troops in camouflage and full gear on patrol was surreal and somewhat sad.

The reality is that there was an extremely comprehensive plan in place for security prior to the attack. But if we want even a remotely free society we have to balance personal liberties with personal security. Personally, I vote for liberty. Aren't the goals of terrorism fear and forcing you to change your way of life?

I'm replying to you because you've posted what you do for a living. Here's a piece of factual on-the-scene reporting: "In the immediate aftermath of the bombings, police, firefighters, emergency personnel, the National Guard, and Homeland Security did an un-freaking-believable job under the most adverse of circumstances."

They really should. As should LB and all those people who get sh*t on by the public every day until someone really needs them.

I have a different opinion of the media though. They give the oldest profession a bad name.

Basically, I just check in about every 8 hours and see what's new.  If you try to watch the news outlets waiting for something to break, it just won't happen OR they makes something up/speculate just to keep you hooked.

Case in point, everyone was reporting it was an 8yr old girl was killed, but ends up it was a boy 24 hours later.  Maybe it's not that big a deal BUT, you could report it's a 8-yr old child and it get's the point across.  But the unchecked fact reporting bugs me.

Then they have to interview anyone they can get their hands on.  Some guy blocks away was interviewed and said there was THREE explosions.  Wrong.  Maybe he hear echos, so not  his fault, but why are they interviewing someone that was 1/2 away?

Some news source actually interviewed someone from the Atlanta bombings that wasn't even in Boston.  I guess to get some kind of comparison/insight?
