Just curious

I was never a high school or collegiate athlete but always interested in fitness.

Which sport did you start with? I've been doing all 3 for so long it is hard to decide. Way back in the good old days I saved swimming and cycling for warmer weather so I will go with running since I tried to do it all year long. Of course eventually I would injure myself and end up swimming or cycling....

Actually if I really go way back my fitness journey started with Jane Fonda VHS tapes .

Bike.  After HS I got a Peugeot race bike. It was slick! Rode it everywhere, but sold it when I needed a few bucks.  Running after that, and someday I hope to be able to swim.

i started with running in HS, but cycling got me off the couch again after college and got me ultimately into triathlon.  i rode a bike every day growing up and was taught how to swim at a young age, but never did any sort of competitive swimming.

Former soccer player, so I guess running came first.

Run and swim at virtually the same time. My first run race was a 1.5 mile 4th of July road race for kids when I was ten. I sorta trained for it for a couple of weeks by running laps around the block. Before that I never did any "training", but my best friend lived about a mile away--I wasn't a patient kid, so I'd run over to her house to play, and home for dinner to maximize playtime. I thought everyone did stuff like that. Her dad happened to be a recreational runner, and a friend of my dad's who was a pretty hard-core runner lived en route and sometimes saw me. They told me about the kids' race and talked me into it--the rest is history. That was also the year I joined the swim team. Our coach was one of the early Ironmen. He was always trying tell me I should do triathlon. I ignored that advice until I was 40, because I thought that all tris were full iron distance, and that those people were nuts! At any rate, there were no tris in my area until recent years, much less kids' tris or development programs. Always wonder what I could have done had I managed to start the sport before age 40! I'm sure I would have loved the kids' tris and tried to get into the junior elite scene--I did for running and relished the training/competition.

Bike much later, just transport and touring until I started tri. I never had a decent bike (not a police auction junker) until college, nor a road bike until starting tri. I still don't really consider myself a biker!

Running.  Sprinter first (100, 200, 400), then distance running starting mid teens and off and on (mostly on) ever since.

I was around water a lot as a kid.  We had a pool, and I was a diver in high school and a lifeguard in college, but I never swam on a team. I got a road bike when I was 14 and a mountain bike in college, and did some fairly regular rec riding and commuting, but no real training of any kind in either S/B until a couple of years ago.

Run, just barely before bike. Still waiting for the swim. :-)

Running. Only came to triathlons because circumstances made it hard to run for me.

Swim since I was a kid.  I didn't ride (other than riding around a bit as a kid) or run until my 30s.

I grew up a runner. Was doing races before I can even remember. Took up cycling in my mid-20safter one of my knee surgeries, when they told me I should cut back on the mileage. Took up swimming not long after.

Runner since end of HS and all through college. Marathoner until some of my training buddies talked me into buying a bike. Swimming? Not really!

So, summary would be 32 years running, 5 cycling, 3 of not drowning

Dina

interesting question. Bike was always first, got my first Shimano Racer when i was 11, seen a DR because of depression after bike is stolen. Running is next because of Track at school/PE. Swimming will always be last just learned a few lessons so as not to drown at 10 years old never liked it. Swimming will always be WIP for me and always be last.

General athlete. Biking and running came out of that. Swimming didn't come until triathlon.

Swim; Swam 2 years in H.S. but slow, best 200 SCY free was 2:20. Ran 1 year of H.S. XC best 3 miles was 17:37 but after 3 years in Army stopped all forms of exercise. 20 years after that started swimming at 42, lost 50 lbs in 1 year, first tri at 43. Wish I kept up after H.S. I'd be kicking butt right now......

Started all three at the same time about 2 years ago I was a sprinter in high school track (that doesn't count) and was at the pool everyday as a kid. ( but that doesn't count either But, I have always been athletic: basketball, vollyeball, etc.

Running came naturally for me since I did track throughout high school. Then taught myself to ride a bike and became good at that. I never was a good swimmer, took alot of work for me in that area. I think thats why i stick to duathlons and marathons.

Honestly, if you had the genetics to go reasonably fast in your HS years, you still have the genetics to go fast (relative to your AG at least) whatever age you are assuming you're not injured or have other health issues. Genetics don't disappear - they're in there, waiting to come out given the chance.

Started club swimming when I was 8. I always rode my bike around my neighborhood as a kid but nothing serious until I got into triathlons; same goes for running.

None. My wife, a former top US finisher at NY Marathon and triathlete told me I would be good at triathlon due to my physical geometry. I ignored her for 10 years. Then on a dare did a run race - not that good either, but was hooked on endurance sports. 18 months later I completed my first sprint. I was nearly last out of the water but finished third in my age group. As it turns out, I'm an ok cyclist due to my "physical geometry".

Swim.  Started swimming for the summer team at age 4 and started on a club team at age 6.  Also played soccer from age 5-15 though, so running was also came first in  away.

Actually riding a bike a lot didn't start until I decided to do my first triathlon a couple years ago at age 15.

If you count BMX then biking. I rode my BMX bike all the time when I was younger and even raced BMX for a couple years. I didn't start riding a road bike until 2 years ago though. I started running 6 years ago just for general fitness it was, never more than 3 miles, and it was off and on with schedule. 5 years ago I learned to swim so I could be an ocean lifeguard. Two years ago I figured I'd try a tri since I knew how to do all 3 sports.

Biking for me, had to do something to keep the weight off after college. Just casual riding mostly. Then I ran into a college friend and met her roommate who had just finished IMCDA. She was also a swim coach so that left me with no excuses. That was all in 08, finally getting around to that first IM this summer. Depending on how this goes I might consider moving to bike full time. I have recently hooked up with a good group of riders, so might focus on the bike and do some racing this fall and next year.

Running. Ran HS XC and never stopped. I absolutely love running but complete in tris to "diversify" myself. Bike then swim. Turns out I enjoy all 3 but running will always be my #1 passion!

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

In February of 2004 I was a 270 pound 34 year old. I had the body of an out-of-shape, degenerate lineman. I was strong and muscular, but with a healthy dose of jiggle and even, dare I say it, wiggle.
