Pre-race routine:

(ok, I'm typing this while watching the Roast of William Shatner. Good stuff!)

up at 4, oatmeal w/peanut butter, coffee. Ride to race with tri bud Cheryl.
Event warmup:

freakin' pouring for a change. We sat in the car until almost race time. Turns out race time was 30 miutes late because of the weather. I was in wave 7 so I went for a short swim to loosen up.
Swim
  • 47m 19s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

unbelievable waves during the swim. Someone actually grabbed my ankle and yanked, now that's a first. Got smacked in the face a few times and did my share of smacking as well.
What would you do differently?:

nuttin'
Transition 1
  • 04m 13s
Comments:

no hurry. It's a long day, make sure I get it right.
What would you do differently?:

nothing.
Bike
  • 3h 47m 45s
  • 56 miles
  • 14.75 mile/hr
Comments:

ok, here's where the fun began. Five miles into the ride, I decide the seat is too low. I see the Mavic tent on the side of the road so I pull in and ask the guy to raise the seat. He grabs an allen wrench, scoots it up a bit, and cranks it back down. "Oh sh*t, I stripped it out," he says. No worries, I'll replace it later and off I go. Needless to say, less than a mile later, the post has slid all the way down and I think my knees are gonna start banging my chin.

I pull off the road and now there's a Mavic car right behind me. Cool! The kid gets out and I tell him what the deal is. He can't fix it but I can have a bike off the top of the car. Holy crap, I hope you have something SMALL. I'll give you the smallest one I have he says, as he hands me a 54cm Scott bike. Yeah, that would be small if I was 7 feet tall!

I quickly realize I now have exactly two options: ride this bike or go home. I take the bike........

and torture myself for the next 51 miles. I can barely reach the shifters or the brakes. The pedals are so far in front of me it's as if I'm riding a recumbent. The seat leaves me in agony and it's a good thing I'm done having children. 'Nuff said.

oh, and it rained. For a change.

This bike made my back hurt, my shoulders hurt, knees and quads hurt.
What would you do differently?:

do a more thorough gear check. Kind of skipped the whole thing because of the rain.
Transition 2
  • 07m 5s
Comments:

took my sweet-a s s time. After that bike ride I really needed to regroup. Not how I planned on the day going. I thought I'd get to the run with fairly fresh legs and this was not the case. I was trashed.
Run
  • 3h 12m 40s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 14m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

I was freezing the whole time. Started off wet and never warmed up. Great course and great support. The volunteers and residents were awesome. Neighbors were out trying to out do each other and it was just a fun time.

Not fun enough to be out there for over 3 hours to be sure, but I was toast by the start of the second loop. I had cramps in places I Never knew you could get cramps. Like from my knees all the way to my toes, all at once. It would start in my hamstring and at the same time run right thru my achilles and into my foot. Ouch.
What would you do differently?:

arrive in better condition from the bike leg.
Post race
Warm down:

fall over and die. argue with spouse as usual. crawl back to car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

too many things to list.

Event comments:

Love EndorFUN races. I would do this again in a heartbeat. Should be easy to beat today's time next year.

Ellen— I am in awe of your accomplishment!

Great job!

And way to hang in there with ginormous bike! No way I could have ridden that distance on a bike that was 3-4 sizes too big for me and then jumped off and run a half marathon.

You rock!!

I want to add this race to my own resume next year.

Hey...whats with the rain again?

I can't believe you had to ride a strange, big bike that long distance...and then run a 1/2 marathon.  You did it though! Congratulations!  You are a 1/2 ironman!

I hope your legs recover quickly...that run sounded painful.

1st things first:

DO NOT SHOW UP at Cranberry! Every time you race, the weather is miserable. Oh wait..for the last 2 years it was MISERABLY HOT racing at the end of August, maybe you should come!! Wink

Seems like at Endorfun races you always end up with Bike Angels - I'm still remembering Granite Ledges....

CONGRATS on finishing your first HIM! I'm wondering if the "surprises" on the run course were there this year with the tsunami rains and all. No mention in the RR of Disneyland, pipes, barbershop quartet, Riverdance girls......

So you're to blame for that weather? Great job in handling everything thrown at you. I'm sure many people would have bailed under those circumstances. I'm very impressed! Congrats!

Great job to battle through the problems. I spoke to a non-BT friend - yes, I'm ashamed to admidt i have one - who said the rain was tough, but that it was better than being 100 out there.

Great race!

JohnnyKay - 2006-08-21 7:25 AM So you're to blame for that weather?

that seems to be the general consensus.  My husband thinks it's because of the thunder cloud I have tatoo'd on my shoulder.

I'm sorry

thinking of having this added to it:

ø

couldn't hurt, right?

Apparently I am also responsible for the rain at Lake Placid a few weeks ago.  It stopped when I left town.

Anyone need their crops watered?  Just invite me for a visit!

Congrats on your first HIM, doing the bike leg on a un-fit bike, and ran through cramps.  I'd have quitted.

Oh wow, you are a TOUGH COOKIE!  I was there in swim wave 10 and, yeah, it was like swimming in a washing machine.  Rough water, lots of flapping.  Ugh.

And then your bike seat/swap mayhem...that's so terrible.  I cannot imagine trying to run after a ride like that, but you stuck with it.  You did not give up!!  I admire that tremendously.

Though the rain was annoying, I have to agree that it was better than 80-100 F heat, which is what I was expecting.

Thanks for sharing your race stories, even taking breaks from the Shatner Roast to do it.

Oh my...Ellen...you show what is to be a true triathlete...deal with what comes up and finish in style!

Congrats on an awesome race with true grit determination!

Not let's see...I did Mooseman & Webster with you...both times it rained...IMLP you visited and Timberman 70.3....I'll go for rain at Cranberry instead of 100...so please please come...I doubt you can bat 100% for rain.

I'm the friend of AdCo, mentioned above, who recently became a member to see what's to see.

I also did the race and the waves on the swim added almost 20 minutes to my expected swim time!!!

Way to stick it out!  Maybe you can get the Mavic guy to pay for your race next year since he pretty much f'ed it up for ya this year.  You did awesome by sticking it out and finishing despite the challenges, that's the mark of a true endurance athlete!  Congrats!!

Thanks all    It makes my day reading your responses to my RR.  When this fiasco was unfolding, I have to admit I was thinking, "this could only happen to me.  I can't wait to go home and share this with BT folks."  LOL  So I had to finish the race otherwise I wouldn't have such a great story to tell!

The other part of this story is that I DNF'd a HIM in 2000, maybe 2001, can't remember.  Thought I could BS my way thru it like a sprint.  That's when I learned a lesson about respecting the distance.   The rain kicked my a ss that day and I never started the run.  So I had a bone to pick with the distance and the weather.  NOT finishing was just not an option. (I think I learned that in the Marine Corps 25 years ago)

Kathy, you bet I'll be there for Cranberry.  I would plan on bringing rain gear    And it rained for Hyannis I as well.  At this rate, I'm betting rain for everything on my calendar.

Laura, Nice to see you on BT.  Now make sure you do a race report so I can read about how a well-done race is done!

As my mother would say...."never a dull moment with you...... "

ELLEN!  You are amazing!  I am so impressed.   You have gone through so much with the knee, etc.....so this accomplishment is amazing!

Your RR is hysterical!  I love this quote, "Someone actually grabbed my ankle and yanked, now that's a first. Got smacked in the face a few times and did my share of smacking as well."  And this one too, "Warm down:  fall over and die."  You crack me up!

Congratulations on your race!  Sounds like you overcame a LOT of adversity in one day between the waves and the bike!  You rock
