Overcast
Total Time = 1h 31m 45s
Overall Rank = 301/549
Age Group = F 25-29
Age Group Rank = 11/32
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5am. Had some breakfast, loaded the car, woke the fiance, hit the road. Starbucks stop for Sam on the way up and we got there at about 6:50am.
Event warmup:

None - just stood in the cold and talked to Courtney
Swim
  • 08m 40s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim went much better than I expected - the water didn't feel too cold after standing out in the cold for a while. My breathing could have been better, but overall I was happy with the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Work on breathing and swimming in open water.
Transition 1
  • 04m 29s
Comments:

I was SLOW (as you can see). There was a huge hill to run up after the swim, and I walked it. I was breathing a little heavy coming out of the swim and just didn't feel like being totally winded when I got on the bike. I need to work on transitions - I was just kind of moving along at a rather slow pace. My mom and finace were up by my transition area, so I talked to them for a second while I got ready. I think if I could have run up the hill and then been more focused I could have easily shaved off a minute of time here.
What would you do differently?:

Focus and run. But as it was my first tri, I was just taking my time.
Bike
  • 46m 27s
  • 13.5 miles
  • 17.44 mile/hr
Comments:

I was glad we went and rode the course two times before because I knew exactly what to expect. It was a lot easier this time than the other two and I was happy about that! I was surprised how many people did not say "on your left" when passing - I thought that was standard?
What would you do differently?:

There were several times when I slowed down because the person in front of me did. I think I was just nervous about the whole passing thing because I wasn't sure if I was going to go faster than the person in front of me once they sped back up. Maybe I should have just passed them and they could always pass me back.
Transition 2
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

I had a hard time running in my shoes because I was told not to scrape up my cleats on the ground if I can help it. I was trying not to run on the cleats and that wasn't working. I have covers for the cleats that I just didn't have time to put on. Need to think about this some for next time.
What would you do differently?:

Do better running w/ the bike. I was also talking to my mom again during this transition, but I wouldn't change that. She came out to support me so I could take a few seconds to say hi.
Run
  • 30m 16s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

I was slow, but for only having been running for the past 7 weeks I was happy with the pace. My knees didn't hurt too bad. I wanted to walk at points but I told myself no walking. I was very proud of not walking at all except to grab some water twice. I was able to sprint up the last hill and through the finish line, and I surprisingly did not feel like I was going to die at the end.
What would you do differently?:

Just work on pace.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched a little and then got my tshirt.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training - I only trained for 7 weeks so I think that I did the best that I could considering that.

Event comments:

My goal for this race was 1:35, so I was very excited to see 1:31 on my watch when I crossed the finish line. I performed much better than I thought and I think that the plan I chose on BT to train with really helped me do so well. I thought I would be in pain at the end, but I felt really good.

Great first race, Meredith! Top third in your AG is awesome. Think where you'll be next year with a bunch of training under your belt. Oh...in races, you don't hear "on your left" much.

YAY!  Great job!  I love that you took the time to talk to your mom in transisiton.  Some things are just more important than shaving a couple measly seconds off your time!

You rocked that race.  I hope you are happy because you were extremely competitive in your first race...and that is awesome!!!  Many of the things you mentioned (running with bike, riding in traffic, etc) will come with more practice.  I remember my first race (a duathlon)....I was just smiling and chatting with everyone because of how much fun I was having!!!

Congratulations, triathlete.

I was trying not to run on the cleats and that wasn't working. I have covers for the cleats that I just didn't have time to put on. Need to think about this some for next time.

Run in your cleats ... You trained for the event, you deserve to run in your cleats.  Not running in them, putting the covers on and so forth is only applicable when you are not racing.

Nicely done to finish so well in your AG during your first race.  That's awesome.

Great first race! That t1 was a real challenge after the swim. Congratulations on becoming a "triathlete" looks like you are already pretty darn competitive in your ag.

Way to go!  The run is the hardest for me too.  At least it's the easiest thing to train and improve on!
