St. Anthony's Triathlon
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 02m 13s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 65/127
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:50, packed our stuff up since we had to check out. Barry insisted on making his french press coffee, so that set us back a bit.

Drove forever looking for a parking spot that was probably 2 miles away from T-area.
Event warmup:

As we get into transition, there are only 30 minutes or so left. Everyone is frantically running around, spraying pam, inflating tires, etc. It was a zoo! We set up Barry's T-area and then mine. I totally forgot to clip my bike shoes to my pedals. Oops.

Trekked to spa beach, wished Barry good luck in his wave... swam a bit w/ Denise and Wendi. Talking to Wendi in the water - "so how do you guys just pee in the ocean? It's really hard to do!" Wendi - "nah, it's not bad. I'm doing it right now!" EEW! :) I promptly swam away to find my own peeing spot.

Ran into 2 girls in my wave that I hadn't seen in a long time. Cool to catch up. I even met Adam (Robit) - recognized him by the BT uniform. I need to get one of those!

Swim
  • 30m 42s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim felt SO LONG to me. I was getting fatigued early on in the swim. Perhaps this could be due to only swimming a few times since January? ;)

I did really good on hugging the bouys, though. I did not want to swim any extra yardage!! I made it a point to sight every few strokes, which is pretty tiring. I think that contributed to my getting out of breath a lot.
What would you do differently?:

be a good swimmer!

Also, I lost my goggles, so I bought a pair at the expo and this was the first time using them. I know it's bad to use something new on race day, but i didn't have a choice. I have to say i LOVE them! Blue seventy goggles ROCK!
Transition 1
  • 02m 47s
What would you do differently?:

Remember to clip my shoes to the bike!!

Wear my ponytail lower, because I had it up high and it wouldn't fit under the helmet!

Just be faster!
Bike
  • 1h 19m 24s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.78 mile/hr
Comments:

I'm OK with how I did on the bike. My time did not improve that much from last year...I did pass a lot of women, so that felt good. I even passed one girl who was mashing her pedals and looked exhausted. I thought to myself, should I say anything about trying an easier gear? I don't want her to take it the wrong way. But, I decided I had to say something. Turns out she was like, "hey thanks for the tip!" I had done my job. :)
What would you do differently?:

Train harder. Do more rides with higher intensity, more at race pace. I don't push myself hard enough when I'm riding in practice. I tend to just go out for a nice ride. :)
Transition 2
  • 02m 41s
Comments:

Was getting some stomach cramps during the bike, and needed to pee. Sat on the grass in T2 and let it loose. WOOHOO! I peed on myself. I was so excited that I was properly hydrated and needed to pee. I didn't care if I took long! After MiamiMan last year when I was getting horrible stomach cramps b/c I was dehydrated and couldn't pee - I was very happy to know I wasn't dehydrated this time.
Run
  • 1h 06m 42s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

I have found the holy land, people. The Run 4: walk 1 method. I have never felt better in a race. I was just crusing along, passing all these women who were shuffling along. I felt nice and fresh after every walk break. At each aid station I poured 2 cups of water on my head, drank 1 cup of water, and bit of gatorade.

I felt SO GOOD on this run, that I couldn't belive my time was not faster. I really was shocked. I thought I was going to be closer to an hour. Oh well. I think I just need to run faster in the 4 minutes.

Passed a lot of BT people: BonBon, Sue, G8RSax, ropkins, snikpos, G8RLA, foolproof, etc.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster?...honestly not much else different I would do. I didn't have any issues with cramping or muscle fatigue, so I guess I just need to push myself harder in training.

Hm, am I sensing a common theme here?
Post race
Warm down:

Ran thru the chute and found Barry. Couldn't wait to hear how his first triathlon went! Couldn't believe our times were almost identical. hee hee :)

Waited in line for some nasty cold pizza and cookies (and no plates). Can't they get subway to bring in some subs or something? Greasy pizza is not appetizing, people!!

Hung out at BT central and heard how everyone's race went.

Event comments:

Love, love this race. 3rd year doing it, and I've improved each year
2005: 3:13
2006: 3:04
2007: 3:02

Can't wait to come back again next year and shave some serious time off of this. 2:50 next year baby!!

A big thanks to billcarb and fcollada for the hotel room on Sun. night. :)If you ever get a chance to hang out w/ these guys, they are hilarious.

It was great to see everyone!! I think this was the biggest BT gathering yet?

Fantastic, up-beat RR -- nice job taking everything as it came, and WTG on the run with your 4:1 "holy land".  Ha ha!

Congrats on the gradual improvements over past years, too.

When you come up to the NE after the move to PA, you'll really get to see why we have to train hard and live each nice weather day to the fullest!

IT'S ABOUT TIME YOU PUT UP YOUR RR!

You were AWESOME!  I'm thinking that peeing on yourself agrees with you!

Next year, DEFINITELY a sub-3:00!!!

Congrats on an excellent race!

Cool you PRed the course again this year....nice!

I love your I can pee story...guess we did learn some new things this weekend.

Your RR is the only one I have read where you actually felt good on the run. With more practice you'll be faster and nail the 4/1 walk holy land!

I agree with Sunny when you move to PA you'll need to come up for one of the big MA area races...maybe Cranberry in August....it is big BT blast!

Great race sweetie...2:50 is very attainable next year, especially once you get training on those Hershey hills (just avoid the hershey chocolates!). Looking forward to doing another one with you, hopefully sooner and not later.

Great race!   It's so cool to see improvement every year, isn't it???

So, this sit on the grass and pee thing...did you pull your shorts down?  I'm really curious...honest...I may have to remember that trick.

Peeing in the ocean IS easy!  The key is to be relaxed!
