I'm new to the sport and I'm curious how many of you out there struggle with balancing your training time with work. I work for a general contractor in Vegas and I typically work around 60 hours a week and I start around 6:00 a.m., which makes before work training possible, but pretty tough if I want to stay up past 8 or 9 at night. Just wondering how some of you get creative with training time.

Thanks!

I've got the perfect job as far as hours and location go.  I don't have to be in until 8:30, so I've got more time than most to train in the mornings (even though I still have a hard time getting up), and my office is about a half mile from my house, so I can walk there in 5 minutes and not have to sit in traffic.

My pay is based on 56 hours/week, as a firefighter working 24 hour shifts, I do 2 or 3 shifts per week, so some weeks it's actually 48 and other weeks it's 72. But I normally get a few hours of sleep at night and only work 9 to 11 days a month so it's not as though I'm busting my rump for the entire 24 hour shift, though it has happened.

It's a great gig for training during the week, but makes it hard to find training partners that have normal jobs.

Erg, tough question. I'm between 55 and 60 most weeks...10 hour days, with a little weekend time sprinkled in.  Weekends aren't too terribly tough, but during the weeks, it can really be hell trying to manage workouts, eating well (which takes time to shop & make food), and sleep. When the chips are down, usually the nutrition goes first, then sleep, then workouts themselves.

Last year I did about a 5 month stretch where I'd get up and to the gym by 5AM, get 90 minutes in before work, and a 2nd workout in at lunch, and do that 4 days during the workweek. Makes it VERY tough to get the right amount of sleep, though, I was down to about 6 hours max a night.

Hmm, this was a tough one. I work part time, so usually it is less than 40 hours a week. But twice a month I work weekends, and that's twelve hours both days. I don't have to be in until 1pm, which makes morning training quite nice. I never get it done though, because I'm lazy. I get home from work at about 9, start making dinner, and never make it to bed before 2am. Still, I have plenty of time to train, and I'm very lucky.

Tough for me to keep track. I have a flexible work environment, so it kinda comes down to this: If I'm not sleeping or working out, I'm at work.

I try to do my best possible to limit the time in the office to 40 hrs/week. I typically do that, but I often don't take a lunch break (don't worry...I do eat, I just don't always leave my desk). My commute on a good day takes 18-20 mins. Unfortunately, now that summer has ended and on any given day there isn't like 10% of the commuters on vaction or something, my commute takes about 40 mins.

Factoring in getting ready for work, driving to and from work, and working, I am unavailable to train from 7:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. I definitely have it better than others, but I know I have it worse than others too.

80+ during Cross Country or Track Season
50- 60 during the 'off season'

Off course that's not factoring in 5 days a week at about 1:30 minutes for conditioning during the summer. (unpaid).

I really wish they'd pay me by the hour.

I have an incredibly perfect job for training for endurance events: Managing director (and only f/t employee) of a small performing arts center. Because I have a bad commute and need to work, typically, two or three evenings a week, the board of directors agreed to set my M-F minimum ofc hrs at noon-6:30pm, so I could at least duck the AM commute. I don't get paid a lot, but my salary is based on ~40 hrs--32.5 in the afternoons weekdays and the other 7 or so being the evenings or Sunday afternoons where I might have to "babysit" the venue for an event. So I have 7 mornings a week to do 1 1/2 to 2 hrs of training. And because the artistic director of the venue is a cyclist and competitive tennis player, he's supportive of me bringing in our part-time help to cover Sunday matinee events so I can do a race. The money gets me down sometimes, but I have to remind myself how much the job rocks lifestyle-wise.

My schedule has been 6a-2p M-F since May, and that has been great. They just told me I have 25 days of vacation I have to use before the end of the year or I loose them, as they will not roll over this year, so I will be taking every Friday off the rest of the year, plus time around Christmas and Thanksgiving. Serves them right for making me take my vacation. Start of the year, I'll have another 25 days to take, so it's all good...

I try to limit the time at the office to 45-50 hrs/ week, but that doesn't include any time that I might do work at home OR the 2.5+ hour round trip commute every day...training has suffered as evidence in my training log.

I am trying to move closer, but it's sucky market for selling a house right now....grrr...

I work 40hrs per week, plus I attend law school. I selected the 55-70, because thats the hours I am unavailable for training.

Hmm, depends how you count the time I'm INTENDING to be working but end up playing on BT or otherwise procrastinating instead.   For those of us who don't have set hours but just have to get the work done, that's pretty stupid, isn't it?

36 hrs a week in a busy ER.. lots of commuting time (40 min each way)...housework to the eyeballs and 10-12 hrs a week training...I think I'm overstretched and I didn't include volunteer stuff with church

Usually 55 - 70 hours / week including weekends.  On my last pay check though (I get paid twice a month) I had just over 60 hours of OT so I've been averaging 70 hours a week the past couple of weeks.  Makes it tough to train but I take what ever time I can get.

I run the show so my hours are flexible and it can go from 15 hours a week to 50 hours a week.  I work out of my home office since I have my assistant at the business office and travel frquently to meet with clients.  I love it!

I'm a grad student, so I work probably 50 - 60 hours a week with all the long research days and grading papers/homework outside of class.  Some weeks are less busy and I get to be a little flexible with my hours (I can workout over lunch, long-term incubations).

I'm in a research laboratory so the hours are flexible.  As long as you put in your time everyday and do your work it's okay.  I get my rides and swim training in in the morning and come straight to work and start straight away.

It's really flexible.  Esp when you have specialist appointments etc...  I do incorporate my training into my work day though.  Morning sessions usually and I'll still get to work by 7am.

I love summer!!!

In Winter I generally don't start until 9am because I need sunlight in order to function.
